I'm fairly certain the licenses are permanent. April 8th is when the offer ends. Sorry for the bad title wording

also you can trial the portable features as part of the pro trial. so there would be no point in this offer if it got cut off.
I wonder if this is them testing the water for a free release like they did with Indy.

Yeah, it won't surprise me if they just roll the basic mobile licenses/capabilities into the free basic version of Unity at some point. The "serious" dev features seem to only be available with the pro versions.
I think it's a great opportunity to get a game or two out on the market to earn money to purchase the pro versions.
EDIT:
More speculation on my part would be that Unity 4.0 isn't too far off on the horizon. So they create a false sense of scarcity with the April 8th thing to get everyone who's even remotely interested in Unity to get the basic mobile licenses.
Many people actually use the opportunity to create some mobile games with Unity, they get hooked on it because it's a good engine. Those people contribute to the Unity community, some buy pro licenses. Then 4.0 rolls out and more people are interested in purchasing upgrades. Kind of similar to what project Messiah did, though in Unity's case with a better product IMHO.

Yes it can be a free license if you want to only test it on a simulator on your Macbook. If you want to test it on an iPad or iPhone you'll need to pay $99 for the license.
IMO it's worth it because nothing is cooler than seeing YOUR app work on the proper device. It's like christmas, it's awesome.

I know that feeling hah yeah it's just irritating you can't build to an iOS device in a tethered fashion purely to test. I think they should provide that feature for sure, but hey, it's Apple.
Awesome of Unity to do this. Definitely gonna claw back some devs from UDK, or st least force people to learn both lol.

Damnit. I spent €350 buying the Android license literally 2 weeks ago. =( Which was a big wallet-hit since I'm currently unemployed.

@Snader:
Let them know about your situation. Maybe they'll give you a refund, some asset store credit, or a discount on a future pro upgrade.

When the indie version went free they offered refunds to people who just recently purchased.

Vprime, skankerzero >> Why is it necessary to get several licenses? I thought each license is per user, not per computer. Why have three extra licenses lying around if no one else can use them, they are registered to one person no? Maybe I've misread the license agreement.

yes, extra licenses for extra people.
I may need a couple extra licenses later this year depending on how things go.

I am starting up a small studio and it would help everyone testing their assets on the same tool. Right now you can only have unity running on 2 computers. Also you are not allowed to have one copy of a license and the rest of your team use a free copy. So If you want your artists just to test their objects in game you have to get them a license as well. No mix and matching of licenses

Then I'll make sure to get some extra licenses myself. I guess five in total should suffice.
