Art Director Needed - Auckland, New Zealand

Hi Polycounters!

We are on the hunt for an experienced art director to come to the most beautiful place on earth - New Zealand and join our team. We have posted this ad here before but haven't made any progress with finding the right person. We pay well, our culture is great, and we are making an awesome game. We are really looking for someone from the gaming industry who has experience with leading an art team and delivering a shipped game.

Do it, you know you want to.

Brook - the Product Manager / Producer / Hiring Manager.

Here is the job advert:

2ndcity Studios is a game studio based in Mt Eden, Auckland. We believe in the power of games to create immersive and effective learning experiences that can bring about positive behaviour, and as such we design and build educational games for children. We have a passion for education and for children to be encouraged to make a positive impact on their local communities and environments.

We're building a children's MMO / adventure game based on the storyline of the Bible and we are looking for an experienced Art Director to join our team. We have a talented art team who are looking for a strong leader to guide them and the project to success! Our studio is a great place to work, with a full team of 20. We have a great culture and aim for high levels of collaboration and having fun together. Our Studio is owned by a Christian Trust whose vision is to create game based resources that open up the story of the bible in fun and engaging ways for 21st century kids. You don't need to be a Christian to work with us, just passionate about gaming and supportive of our vision.

THE ROLE:
You will bring a sense of art leadership to the team, in two main ways:

Firstly, you will have the ability to lead the art team towards a consistent and compelling art style that the game director and product manager are happy with. This will involve 'soaking' in our current art style, and then delivering this in the most efficient manner. It will involve strong communication skills and leadership ability, as you will have a team of 8 or 9 artists to direct. You will have a vision that you are aiming for, and your leadership will get the team there.

Secondly, our pipeline is based around Blender and Unity3D, and so you should have 3D production experience to be able to mentor, direct, guide and lead the art team to producing quality 3D art in a timely manner. If an artist tells you that it will take 30 hours to texture an NPC, you will know from experience if that is a realistic estimate or not!

Do you have what it takes?
  • You can direct and define an art style that gives our game(s) personality and life
  • You have the ability to lead a team towards a consistent vision, by using any and all methods available to you
  • You will have excellent time management and people management skills, being comfortable leading and managing a team of many diverse artists
  • You will have extensive experience in 3D art - Blender preferred, but any 3D training is suitable. You will be confident in 3D work, including modelling, and texturing. A strong understanding of rigging and animating will serve you well. 2D art experience / expertise is a bonus.
  • You will have proven experience in games, game engines, and the requirements of working to poly-limits, as well as an understanding of the limits imposed for systems such as avatar customisation.
  • Knowledge of Unity3D is a bonus

You will be reporting directly to the Product Manager but will also interface regularly with the Game Director and Technical lead.

In other news, our offices are bright, fun, and open plan. We have a great team atmosphere here, with a team lunch once a week, Nerf battles, and the usual studio banter.

Please note if you make the short list we will require you to take an art test to determine your suitability for the role.
