i figured i should make a thread, instead of spamming the what are you working on thread..
so i'm building an engine. my engine in fact :poly142:
i just love doing machinery stuff. oh well...
3d studio max, regular polygonal modelling, done off photographs, rendered with mental ray
some pics are older, generally lots of stuff to do yet:
intake side of head, intake manifold, rear side of the block and head, oil pans... etc etc. i dont know where i'll stop. maybe i'll do alternator, powersteering etc, who knows. maybe i'll get bored.

my workflow:
i make a blockout out of primitives and some subdivision modelling for more wierd shapes, then attach them to one object.
out of those i detach all circular parts, and i start making a retopo on top of the blockout, including the circular parts in order to keep them nice and round. then turbosmooth everything, delete the blockout.
i don't know how long it's taken me, recently i'm getting faster. the left side of the engine took me about a week in my spare time. guess around...30 hours? for the lft side.

in a few hours i'll start work on the head so i'll rec that video... but it might take days until it's done so, patience.

I am curious how long this took you, I'd like to try something this complex when I have time. Maybe you could share some of your workflow?

And maybe just a personal preference, but for wires for HP I like to see the unsubdivided version, makes it a bit easier/quicker to look at.

I hadn't considered creating my base mesh then creating a new mesh over it using surface constraint. I was being dumb and box modelling my base mesh then manually cutting into it and matching verts. This gives you so much more control over edge flow.
I'm gonna have this on while I am at work for the next week or so
also gonna make a real world dimensions exhaust manifold in 3ds so my fabricator will have everything measured up for him.

What are you using for the modifier shortcuts above your modifier stack in max?

Having modifier buttons is a default thing you can set in max...
update: finished left and back side of the head. a thing is missing where the flat area is but i can't find any reference online...must be something like the chain tensioner up front but with a coolant hose.
too bored to make the back side of the block, i'm gonna do the oil pan next
still work in progress. i ve made a mistake , mixing my references... VTC heads are not high port, damn it. gotta redo some stuff...
oh , it also appears i forgot to turbosmooth.
