Alpha overlapping issue

I am having this issue with the textures looking funky and overlapping in UE4/Maya, and am not sure what I am doing wrong.I am pretty new to messing with alpha channels and transparency so please bear with me. I modeled a plane and just painted this on using transparency. When I go to set up multiple planes to create a grass clump, it looks like garbage. I did do a little reading and maybe it has something to do with Z buffering and depth sorting etc, which is kind of over my head at this point.

tl;dr... is there some workaround to prevent this or a setting I am missing?
