Polygroups in Zbrush

Im new to zbrush and have been doing tutorials along side digital tutors so far. Everything has been going fine until today when i opened up my project my polygroups I made yesterday were gone and my project was also in all grey. When I tried to mask a new object and make a polygroup from the mask, nothing would happen. No recoloring or change. Please help!!!!
