Hey guys.
I'm on the hunt for a brand new gaming/working pc right now and was thinking of getting the 680.
The troubling thing is I hear it performs really badly with anything other than pure gaming.

Just wanted to ask if any of you guys are running this card together with 3DS Max, Zbrush, photoshop, udk or any other modelling related software you may have. What are your impressions?

Also, if the 680 is indeed not a good way to go, what would be a good alternative (within a similar budget).

Thanks!

Don't know where you heard that a GTX680 would perform bad outside of gaming. You will be doing just fine in any 3d app with that. I have a 570 and I have had meshes well over 15million on display in my viewport with no issues.

Also have had a lot of stuff with very large textures 4096x4096 on display with using 3 point shader, scene lights and a few other things so yeah... You will be just fine.

That's just the thing.
I remember reading on several occasions that in terms of computing the 500 series surpasses the 680.

Just wanted to see if anyone can confirm this 1st hand.

unless you have in excess of 16gb of ram i wouldnt worry about your GPU, since your ram will most likely fail you before the GPU even breaks a sweat.

Those articles were talking about gpu compute which is unrelated to directx viewport performance.

660 and 680 are Kepler based architecture GPU's, and while the clocks might be lower, the technology is actually much better. As of right now, yes, the 500 series may be faster technically, but just wait till nvidia gets going on those drivers for Kepler architecture cards...hahaha then we shall see.
