VG Remix - Khazad Dum (Lord of the Rings) - W.I.P

Hello there!

This assignment differs slightly from the original contest, I'm allowed to make any object or scene piece using 100 tris and any hero piece using 500 tris. Each object can only have a 128px texture and each hero can have a 256px texture. There's no limit on how many objects I'm allowed to create.

When I was first tasked with this, my first thought was to re-create Minas Tirith from Lord of the Rings but maybe that was a little bit overboard. Instead, I decided to model "The Stairs of Khazad Dum". The collapsing stairs in Moria where the Balrog is chasing the fellowship of the ring.

I did some rough sketches of what I wanted to make:

Then I put some more detail into the one that I liked the most:

Now that I had chosen a design I was happy with, I made a planar view of it and drew up what the stairs would look like:

I started blocking out the scene in rough shapes and started creating the set pieces:

Then I started to work on each of the members of the fellowship.
As each hero could only have a maximum of 500 tris, and I had never modelled a human before, I found this rather tricky. Eventually, I managed to get a model which somewhat looked like Gimli and then used that model as a base to model the others, changing bits and pieces as I went.

As I had first started with Gimli, I figured I would texture him first.

So far, this is all I currently have, I'll keep this thread updated as I go.
If anybody has any feedback, I'd love to hear it. =D

I just finished the textures on some of the other members of the fellowship.

I couldn't get the faces quite right and it was taking too much time so I left them blank for now, maybe if I get more time later, I can fix them up.

I positioned each member of the fellowship to get an idea for how it would look. Using clips from the film, I tried to re-enact the scene.

I wanted to add some goblins on the wall to make it look as though a lot was going on.
I did some research on the goblins in Moria and found that unlike the goblins in High Pass, the Moria goblins were green and seemed to be riddled with diseases and disfigurements. They were roughly the size of a Hobbit but had longer legs and arms. I changed the Hobbit model slightly to make the legs and arms longer and more disproportionate and came up with this:

I figured the scene was still fairly empty so I changed the model of Gandalf slightly to make the Balrog of Morgoth (Durin's Bane)

According to the film, The Balrog was roughly 4-5 times the size of a human, had wings and a whip.

I made a fairly descent looking, tillable rock texture which looked good on the middle platform and the two side platforms, but it didn't look all that great on the actual rock wall.

I also made a couple of buildings for the walls to give the goblins somewhere to hide behind.

I re-did the wall and added a lava floor, Although in the lore, the cavern didn't have lava, I thought it would look better than just having a pit that led to nowhere.

I haven't quite figured out how to make textures in Sketchfab have an alpha channel or how to make parts tile.

I just rendered out a a picture of what the finished scene looks like in 3DS Max, now I just need to upload it to Sketchfab and fix the lighting.
