Boner3D - Auto rigging software

Hey everyone,

Just thought I would share this awesome bit of software that I found on Steam Greenlight Concepts. Keep in mind that this is in prototype phase and is subject to change.

It's funny because it's something every rigger/animator has heard at least once in their career: oh you're a boner! are you finished boning yet? Are you going to bone that character or have someone else bone it?

Title worked on me, it got me to stop what I was doing and watch the video. This software seems like it could be pretty useful for somebody who is a total noob at animation like myself.

It automatically weights your characters to the repective bones. I am pretty sure that Josh can add animation retargeting.

So is this supposed to be a competitor for things like Mixamo?

Those initial weights weren't very good, those kind of mistakes shouldn't be happening in modern software.

Just looks like a skin binding program, that can soon also export fbx.

Unless I'm missing something, I'm not seeing how this is an improvement over Maya & Max's default skin binding workflow.

Yeah, I was thinking that too. Maya and a lot of other 3D programs have equivalent skin binding built in already. Pretty sure even Blender does, which is free.
I'm curious what sets this apart.

From what I understand - It is supposed to be a cheaper alternative to Mixamo.

Also got to keep in mind that this is still very much a prototype and things will be fixed.

I love it, would buy the final and am tempted to back it but I don't think it will reach its funding goal of 50 grand, depends really I think it will cut it close, you need to factor in how many artists studios etc will back this project, most will go for 49 dollars as that gets you the beta and a copy, so we will need a little over 1000 backers.......actually maybe its doable ... I will give it a week and see where its at before I back it I think

I'd imagine he would have seen more success if Boner3D could generate different kinds of dicks that could be imported into any 3D package. More advanced features could include randomly generated textures.

I wonder if Mixamo auto rigger bought this guy out, or use something similar.

it seems highly odd the dude would just quit so fast, and indeed the 50,000 kickstarter does seem high when all he needed to do was hire a dude to do a FBX exporter.

I wasn't planning on doing this right now, but if you've got something that's popular, you want to strike while the pan is hot, or whatever the saying is. So I put a proper Greenlight campaign up, together with a new Kickstarter campaign. The idea is that I only want to do this if it's a hit, so I am letting the market tell me in advance rather than wasting time making it a standalone program. I have no idea if it will succeed or not, but since I've got nothing to lose on this I set the goal fairly high. It's not worth my time otherwise.

One point he failed to demonstrate, which definitely hurt his presentation... was not showing the 'auto -rigging' portion of the program

Simply 'loading a skeleton' into the mesh and then applying a skin to it is far less impressive than showing the program predetermine or automate where the skeleton bones would be placed in a character mesh.

He named it an auto-rigging software package afterall
