so what i done with the first experiment is i paint over the lower-right ship

saturate the highlights more. What you can also do is when picking your lighter color, not only do you move the little color picker up and to the right however much you want, but you can also move it up on the hue slider a tiny bit also. Same goes for shadows but do the opposite ;)
