Vertex painting and such

Hey guys. Right im trying to vertex paint damage on my concrete wall texture, So i made a brick seamless texture and a basic concrete seamless texture, I want to paint the brick in certain areas but have the normals go inwards around the edge of where im paiting. kinda hard to explain but i found an image that sort of represents what im trying to say. plaster02.jpg so u can see that it like sink in where the damage has been painted. At the moment all i've managed is to paint it on but it looks like it has jsut been painted xD not like broken off the wall. any suggestions on how to make it go inwards?
