Ribbon Trail Particle Troubles

Hey all, I have a fairly specific thing that I want to do with a ribbon particle, but I can't seem to find a tutorial that explains exactly what I want to do.

Basically, I have these giant shadow arms on my model (see above) and I want them to have a sort of ribbony trail behind them while they move around. The thing I can't figure out is how to get the ribbon trail to take the shape of the entire arm, instead of being a thin little strip or a big rectangle.

Right now I can only figure out how to get measly little trails like this one.

In a nutshell, I guess I need to know:

Is it possible to make a ribbon trail particle reference the shape of the mesh its attached to?

EDIT:

Also, this is unrelated to the ribbon particle but does anyone know if there's a way to make a mesh "materialize" in without using matinee? I was hoping to also make the arms seem to fade in from transparent to opaque, but they're connected to the rest of the model by its skeleton and I've been having a difficult time trying to figure out the best way to go about it.
