3ds max/ Maya updating assets in multiple scenes

So I work for a company which creates 3D animations and I'm kinda running in to an issue, which i need to figure out. As far as making animations we have scenes which refer to different locations/environments, and shots which are different cameras within the same environment. However the issue that we come across is that Often times the scenes are very high in detail(and need to be), Also they are slowed down when material are updated, and render setting are implemented. So a good solution is to separate the scenes, and create a different file specifically for different shots. Then in those shots deleting all the assets that are outside the view of the camera. However sometime we need to update assets, or change materials, and would like it if those assets and materials changed and updated simultaneously in all shot files at the same time. Also sometimes we do projects in Maya and sometimes in Max. Is updating all at the same time a feature that they have?
