Reusing shapes from NDO to make DDO color ID shapes

Is there a nice workflow to take some of the shapes I created in NDO to reuse in DDO?

At the moment, paths, for example, get destroyed when I convert a path to a layer.

I'd want to take that path I just created and reuse that work to help me create a shape in my color id map to give that area a different color.

This would be great for creating screws in walls, for example, and having an easy way to color those screws silver in DDO.

At the moment, the only way I see to do this easily is to go back in after creating the normal map and recreating the shapes, or doing some hard to manage work where I keep duplicates of my shapes and paths for later.

Also it seems like there's no good way to edit paths after I convert them to a normal layer.

(OK I found a way to find the path I created, but my complaint about not being able to edit the paths still stands. I was able to edit the path in the layer again but my changed didn't take effect.)
