A stab at Hand painted textures

Been wanting to try my hand at painting textures. So after days and days of doing studies and scribbling, I finally got around to making some (2) finished textures. Any Tips/critique (good or bad) is welcomed 
These 2 took about 2-3 hours each, and I'm slowing working on a 3rd right now.
Also, Are there any tips to making dirt-like ground textures? I want to try making some, but I've no clue where to even begin =\

That 3d one I was working on.
Plus, another plank texture using my previous one as a base. Only painted 2 boards and flipped them around to get a feel for things. Very much a wip still.
Block out the Shape(s) first, set the tone (Colors and lighting) and go from there. Start out Big and work smaller.
A quick "experiment" I did. Mainly used the fast mallet tool on a high size/low intensity until I got the shapes build up, then refined and build edges using the hard polish tool.
Quite happy with the result.

Painting it in with the layer set to "color" makes it look too cartoony
Edit: looks nice so far! I really like that Style! Maybe do some slight color variations on the grass!
Although I did consider rendering some base geometry to work off at first.

EDIT:
Also might block off the two "chipped" / "curved" stone (the ones right next to eachother). The Repetition is a tad too much wit them two.
-create a layer, and set it to "screen"
-with a medium SOFT brush, poke the surface a few times with a color that is the same as the stone, but with some warm color added to it. like an orange/grey.
-It is gonna look way too strong, so go to your layer opacity and pull it way down so that you have a nice subtle hint of warm color

Added some *slight* color and highlights to the stone to make them seem less flat.
Didnt look right at all using Screen mode =\
Ended up using Mahogany/Orange-ish on overlay and light grey on Multiply, both set to a very low transparency.
Also dulled some of the bight edge highlights
Anywho, Decided to put what i learned from that texture into a new one. This time dirt!

Get Vertex 2 and read pages 268-281 it has some things that I feel could help you with these stones
Not following it word for word, though. I want to find what works for me, rather than copy someone else's process =\

you might also want to think about putting some material in between the stonework like sand or snow to give it a more interesting character
Gonna spend some time defining the rock slabs some more though.
High-poly wip sculpt in zbrush:
Still needs some work, but I can tough it up in photoshop as I go.
Might bring up the saturation on the dirt a tad, though.
