I would go higher in subdivision first thing -> save a morph target -> give it some damage like you have -> bring the edges of the damage back with the morph brush set to splatter.
Check out my tutorial I did a while back. Look at the highpoly part. It's pretty much the same thing but without wrapMode..

Everything stated by me is my personal opinion and it is not in any way related to Avalanche, if not stated so.

Chimp - that's badass!
Well started playing with fibermesh in zb4r3. Still wrapping my head around it. Initially I tried to make the eyelashes with it, but ended up just making it with an extracted mesh and the snake hook brush. They still need a lot of love.
The eyebrows are done with fibermesh. This is attempt 5...or maybe 50. I've lost track. They also need work, but putting the current progress up to help keep myself motivated.

I love that Squalls, very crisp! The round shape on the side of the nose looks like you have some uv stretching. Also, the color is very uniform over the whole plane, you might want to darken areas, add bits of colors - check this dude out for inspiration:

Ravenslayer: that has come together so well, only crit is the weapon looks sharper than the character and its drawing my eye a bit.
bugo: Man that brings back memories id love to see your spec map and material setup for the gold, looks incredible.
SplatPixel: OMG he looks amazing, reminds me a bit of naruto for some reason. maybe its the cloak, looks like the akatsuki.
So much awsomeness everyone

I'm going to start doing little 1-2 day props to get better at texturing. Today I started off with a Japanese postbox. It took 11-12 hours from start to finish, with the texturing phase taking somewhere around 4-5 hours. It's still pretty lame looking, but I'm learning. 1060 tris.
