Why would you say no ref if you didn't base it off someone? To me, saying no ref means "i didn't look at anything", in which case, Scooby is trying to make something realistic without using any kind of groundpoint to know if he's doing things right. Which is just... confusing to me? It seems to go against what I've learned about how to make art look good (reference reference reference)
I don't know, the best way I can think of describing how this is bad is in Paul Richard's article here- http://autodestructdigital.blogspot....emix.html#more under define/refine your loop.
Mostly here- sure, ok Scoob, no reference... but... why? Do you have a personal goal you're not stating? Was it to see if you could? Was it to show off that you could? I'm just curious.
Tobbo- I think you meant to refer to scoob there?
Edit: Just editing this to add that the sculpt looks amazing. I'm impressed by what you managed to accomplish here Ryan. Maybe you didn't use reference simply because you didn't need it

I do quick sculpts with out ref to see how far i can get before i need to use ref its a fast way to find out what anatomy you don't fully understand then you can flick to ref and learn straight away. Thats the only time i dont use ref lol and its for a purpose.

@Splatt: you could maybe try scaling up the head? Also the separation between legs and torso seem to be leaving the hips out?

It does seem to have a rather short torso lol and yea i think if i make the traps smaller and the head a bit bigger things will start to look a bit more normal

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using refs. It is impressive though, and still would have been if references were used.

I disagree with it being a bad influence. Ref is great, but you can go without it once you've honed your skills to the level of the Scoobs. I never use ref for cloth, i like to have fun with it, and I think Ryan is in that same boat.... except with heads.
BTW, DOPE WORK SCOOBS!

Not game art related but what the hell, I had fun making it.
My girlfriend wants an english bulldog puppy really bad (but we live in the city where its kinda cruel to have a dog so it's a no no for now) and since I wanted to do a few tests with Vray Fur anyway I decided to model a part of our living room with our future/virtual dog wich she insists on naming Fonzy...

Really nice work man! Not so sure about the slightly rotated camera in the overall composition. Make it feel a little bit more like a upgoing tunnel rather than a corridor, imo. Keep up the awsome work! Ha det gött! Tjo

created WIP - Desert Village
on 06-20-2012 11:00 PM
Hey guys, I'm newbie and would be great receive some feedbacks.
This is a desert village that I've being working on it.
I'm trying to define the arch and textures first, then I'll go to environment.
I would like to go more for a cartoon visual language, but it's looking like too much monochromatic.
Desert Village:
Training Center:
Shop:

My gf saw this when I saw scrolling through the forums. She loves it! Probably for the same reason your gf would... a bulldog. She's a bulldog maniac...at least until she got one. I would advise against as would she. Health problems, breathing problems, loud snoring, VERY VERY STUBBORN, constant farting, potentially destructive nature (already lost one intuos 4 to her bulldog). The vet costs will be in the hundreds of dollars over time. Best just to enjoy the bulldog look from afar, its not worth it to own one in my opinion. Her dad ended up adopting the thing since he exhibits most of the same problems as the bulldog in his old age. lol
She got a min pin and now couldnt be happier as they are healthy, cute and quite smart.
