created Workshop #5- Pables
on 03-01-2011 01:44 AM
Hi, I finished it last month, but forgot to post it
Lately I will put some wires if you like. I'm happy with the result, and I think modeling this helped me to improve my modeling skills.
I also made a turntable. Here is the link just in case the embed doesn't work properly Turntable on Vimeo

Looking good, seems very accurate. Try to get some wip shots up next time, its not as fun when we can't see the process!
One thing I noticed, is that the half circle shape on the baseplate, where it latches to camera itself is too soft and not quite accurate, I noticed the same thing here; http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=78362
You may just want to reread my last couple posts there.
If this was to be baked down to a low res model as a game asset, I would say a lot of your edges are too hard, but its sort of up to you if you'd like to model with that mentality.
[edit] Oh one more thing, with the leather chunk, you have nice soft bevels for the intersections on most areas, but that half circle shape, and the strap lugs its just a straight up intersection. Would be nice to have that modeled there as well so it doesn't look tacked on.

Thank you very much for your comments Earthquake. You're right with the baseplate, I hadn't even noticed it. And you're also right about the intersection.
About the edges being too hard, I didn't have the intention to bake it to a lowpoly. I started this more like a hardsurface subd practice. But is good to know in any case. Thanks again.
And sorry about the process, I modeled straight and I forgot about posting the wip shots. Next time I will post more wip shots so you can help me through the process and have more fun!

From the refs in the sticky it looks like your tiling displacement is a bit too high - eg the details are smaller than they should be.

Pables, I see you're working in modo. Do you mind sharing your approach to the diamond pattern on those knobs?

Sure mate, the truth is I did more or less what Earthquake explains in this post ( http://www.polycount.com/forum/showp...20&postcount=8).
I've also tried other ways, but this seems to be an easy and efficient method.
