If you want to make environments and props, then stick with those. There are lots of people on Polycount that do environment art. I would suggest finding a piece of environment concept art and recreating it in 3d, textured and game-ready.

What I mean is, people doing environments are doing UDK contests in the forums, I've been to. Does anyone know who uses UDK, i have played with it for a while and I know a few game companies use it.

50%+ of the game industry uses UDK. i think it would be a safe bet to use it. other than that there is Unity 3D.

yeah Brian is right, tons of developers use UDK; it's pretty user friendly, and capable of a lot, and there's already tons of documentation on it. Unity is also an option, it may not be as fancy but its still capable of a lot, and has a decent amount of tutorials. The Cryengine is also free now, it's super fancy, looks amazing, but the documentation is rough and in my experience at least it isn't that user friendly.

I'd definitely go for UDK to start with that's mostly because of the ton of documentation that's out there.

badass!! thanks guys. I have seen employers asking for people knowing unity, but I have messed around with UDK a bit before. I will pick it up again. However, eat3d has a pretty in depth guide, it seems of the cryengine here http://eat3d.com/cry3_intro_vol1. I'm not sure which one would be best, i had a bit of trouble with UDK, doing it solo, but maybe things will be different this time around or maybe I should try cryengine or Unity. Any opinions on this?

in the mean time, I'll begin videos on UDK.
