I just tried VoidWorld briefly, but simply having it open with the cursor above the viewport makes gpu usage fluctuate between 4 and 96% usage (according to GPU-Z). I noticed that my gpus fans went into overdrive the moment the program opened is why I checked.
  • storm3
Rabbid_Cheeze: This might be one of the issues associated with the Multi-Core rendering / usage problems we had a while back, I'm not sure if IStonia figured a way to fix those issues or not, because I have been away a while just using beta's haven't really messed with the multi-core setting to see if it has been fixed yet.. IStonia or someone in the know want to chime in here?!? For the time being try changing the number of cores setting to 1, btw: what graphics card are you using? I'm using an Gigabyte nVidia GTX-i 550 OC series.. Not saying for sure, but if your using ATI this might have something to do with it as well. Since I have been using the default setting of 2 cores with no noticeable issues..

Hope this helps, but if not, hopefully someone else can chime in here too.. I believe the last I heard he had put multi-core rendering trials on hold while working on features and bugfixes.. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.. If it is an ATI make sure you get the latest drivers and bugfixes ATI usually needs some sort of patches / driver updates to make them work with different games and apps.

    Ciao'

    Hi all,
Really loving voidworld so far (coming from silo, lightwave, wings etc) and I've been a modeler pro and non-pro for about 12 years.

One thing I always use in every package is flattening subobjects: is there a command to flatten subobjects along a plane (like x,y,z, or a selection normal)?

And how do I flip the normals of faces?

    Cheers,
    DR

    new update.
    http://www.digitalfossils.com/Download/VoidWorld-Mar-21-12.rar

    Summary of changes:
    * Object grouping is improved. It is now node based and more flexible. For detail, see Help > Contents > Modeling > Scene Organizing.
    * Material is now at scene level. Material can also be grouped for easy organizing.
    Thanks!

Rabbid_Cheeze: I have no idea how that happen. Did you use the latest version?

    new update.
    http://www.digitalfossils.com/Download/VoidWorld-Mar-23-12.rar

    Summary of changes:
    * A bug is fixed which occured when duplicating object that has multi meshes which share the same materials.
    * Subd creasing is improved. The shape is better when two adjacent edges have different creasing weights.
    * Interpolation function is added to edge Crease Subd virsual tool. It generates creasing weights along a selected edge lines base on the creasing weights at both ends of the edge line. For detail, see Help > Contents > Modeling > Edge Section > Crease Subdivision > Interpolation. There is also an quivalent streamline basic tool, Crease_Subdivistion_Interpolate, under edge group.
    * Edit > Customize > Tools > Edge Shortcut Tools > Copy Edge Subd Crease Weight/Paste Edge Subd Crease Weight.
    Thanks!
  • Michael Knubben
Good to hear about the creasing improvements! I've been using them a lot since a few days, and did notice some odd shapes where edges meet.

I got an error, and was hoping you coulod figure it out:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17715/vw_cantexport.png

I already exported as obj once, but whatever I did since then must have broken something because now I just get this error. I can save to vws just fine.
I'll install the latest (still using feb-09 build) to see if it fixes it.
  • IStonia
MightyPea: Can you send me the vws file to info@digitalfossils.com to track the bug?
  • Michael Knubben
    Sent!

Also, I work without the toolbars, and now I can't find the snapping options. I'll agree that the options were a bad place for them, but where are they now?
  • Michael Knubben
Another bug report: When I toggle the toolbars on (where off when I started up VW), selection highlighting (and selection itself) is offset by roughly the size of the toolbars. Turning them off again fixes it.
  • IStonia
    Manipulator > Snapping Options.

I can't help with that problem. It is from a third party software. Normally if you resize a docking panel it will be fixed.

  • Michael Knubben
I just found another bug - Rotation Angle snapping isn't respected in the Axis_Rotate tool, it just rotates as if Rotation Angle wasn't set.
  • Michael Knubben
And now rmb isn't recognised on my tablet, whereas it works fine in Maya (and everywhere else). My settings also changed, despite the fact I've used vw all day yesterday and things worked fine. Nothing changed, aside from Windows updates, and turning off the tablet pen shit (and turning it off again after windows update turned them back on. Thanks, Microsoft)
edit: actually turning off the Tabletpc service rather than just turning off all that shit manually fixed the rmb problem.

For an example of which settings changed, my w, e and r tools changed 'turn on manipulator' from 'On Tapped' to 'on activated'. My loop selection also changed, although I don't know in which way, all I know is that my loop selection is messed up (it deselects stuff on the second click)
  • IStonia
    new update.
    http://www.digitalfossils.com/Download/VoidWorld-May-15-12.rar

    Summary of changes:
    * Subdivision performance improved, 50%.
    * Clip planes can be adjusted manually. Edit > Preference > Clip Plane.
    * File > Clipboard > Copy/Paste. This can be used to transfer models between other apps.
    * Dimension Snap option is added to instance creation.
    Thanks!

MightyPea: The bug is fixed. The settings are saved in a file so there should be no way it can be changed by a windows update.

    Thanks!

This is an old feature request, so sorry if there's a technical reason it can't be implemented:
Can the bridge-tool highlight edges it can connect to? Same thing with Vertex welding and any other tools where this makes sense, it would be lovely. I think the workflow of just holding down the brdige hotkey and dragging over another edge is fantastic, and this would make it even more comfortable.

+1 sounds usefull for doing bridge or merge operations while in wireframe mode.

    new update.
    http://www.digitalfossils.com/Download/VoidWorld-May-30-12.rar

    Summary of changes:
    * Better performance in path paint selection.
    * Highlight indications for Edge/Hole-Bridging and Vertex-Welding tools are implemented. The color can be customized in Preference form. MightyPea, hopefully this is what you asked for.
    Thanks!
  • Michael Knubben
Perfect! Could you also make them perhaps 1px thicker?

Another idea I had was to introduce some visual feedback to manipulator-less operations such as Axis_move. One idea is to indicate on the mini-axis in the top right of the viewport which axis or plane things are being moved/scaled/rotated on?

edit: small inconsistency I found: In the bridge tool, with single bridge I can click on the first edge, drag over to the second one and let go. With multi, I need to click twice. I like that both options are available in single, but do miss the dragging method in multi.

    Also, Voidworld is awesome! :D
Been doing an onsite freelance job where I was supposed to use a particularly buggy Maya install, but instead just modeled everything in Voidworld.
  • IStonia
I am so happy to hear that how vw can be used!

As for the multi-edge-bridging tool, I think you can just use one click. 1. hotkey. 2. MMB click the first edge. 3. Move cursor over the second edge then let go hotkey. It works for me.
  • Michael Knubben
Oh, I see! I thought Multi Bridge used your selection, but it seemingly just loop grows the edge you hovered? That works, thanks :)

I don't know if you've seen this, but if possible I'd like to get something similar in VW: http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=99132
I know there are no modifiers in VW, but is there any possibility for non-destructive modeling tools? You would use edge weights to define the Chamfer thickness.

I like working with edge creasing, but would prefer chamfers over sub-d smoothing. This leaves me with a cleaner (less dense/cpu-intensive) mesh, with the same visual result! This makes exporting and baking a lot more pleasant.
This Quad Chamfer modifier has the advantage that you're softening edges, without adding a lot of loops on the rest of a mesh. It certainly has other advantages too, but that's the part of it that I'm most interested in.

Also, is there currently a way to set the chamfer segments without going into the options? Perhaps using the scrollwheel?
To clarify how that would work (and it would work well for me since I don't use the scrollwheel to zoom):
    -select/highlight edge
    -press-and-hold f
-drag mouse to determine chamfer width
    -scroll up to increase segments

It would also be nice if Rounded Bevels were displayed as such while using the tool, but perhaps this is not possible?

Lastly, perhaps always open a tool's options in the side-panel while using it and allow the user to adjust its settings afterwards (before you do anything else)? This would allow me to do the bevel as described above (using streamline tools) and decided immediately afterwards that I'd like the bevel to be flat rather than rounded.
I'm not asking for a complete history as in Maya, but just on the last tool.

Ofcourse, I realise this might not be possible in VW, so just let me know.

edit: I'm trying to set my tools up so they activate the tool with options 'on tapped', so I can tap once to activate the tool with options, and just hold-and-drag to quickly perform it. So far though, I'm having no luck. I'm trying it with Chamfer in Edge mode, any idea why this isn't working? I'll download the latest version at work as well, to check if it's not just a bug.

    edit2:
I realise I'm asking for a lot already, buuut:
Could delete be added to the Streamline Tools? This way I could have delete on tapped, but when held down I could Merge verts/Collapse edges&faces or whatever else is thematically related.

MightyPea tap a number key before completing the chamfer.

also ya the last tool thing would, be nice, blender does it this way as well, you can edit the last too paramaters after use, as long as you dont do any other operations.
  • IStonia
Q: I know there are no modifiers in VW, but is there any possibility for non-destructive modeling tools?
    A: No. Sorry.

Q: It would also be nice if Rounded Bevels were displayed as such while using the tool, but perhaps this is not possible?
A: It is possible. I will try that at some later stage.

Q: is there currently a way to set the chamfer segments without going into the options? Perhaps using the scrollwheel?
    A: Hit a Number key.

Q: Lastly, perhaps always open a tool's options in the side-panel while using it and allow the user to adjust its settings afterwards (before you do anything else)? This would allow me to do the bevel as described above (using streamline tools) and decided immediately afterwards that I'd like the bevel to be flat rather than rounded.
    A: Try this.
    1. Press down 'F' key.
    2. Press down LMB to activate the chamfer tool.
    3. Hit 'Home' key to bring up the chamger tool's param panel. You may release 'F' key if you find it's too difficult to reach 'Home' key.
    4. Press down 'F' key again to keep the tool alive as you are going to release LMB.
    5. Release LMB.
    6. Use mouse to move the tool's panel to let the programe know that you want to keep it open on the tool activated next time.
    7. Release 'F' key to exit the tool.
    Now do this.
    1. Select some edges.
    2. Press down 'F' key.
    3. Press down LMB to activate the chamfer tool. The tool's panel should appear.
    4. Drag LMB to do some chamfering.
    5. RMB to cancel the chamfering.
    6. Release LMB.
    7. Now you can make input changes in the tool's panel and then LMB to do the chamfering.
For more information see, Help > StreamLine Tools > How To Use StreamLine Tools?

Q: I'm trying to set my tools up so they activate the tool with options 'on tapped', so I can tap once to activate the tool with options, and just hold-and-drag to quickly perform it. So far though, I'm having no luck. I'm trying it with Chamfer in Edge mode, any idea why this isn't working? I'll download the latest version at work as well, to check if it's not just a bug.
A: You have activated a visual tool. A visual tool does not behave like a streamline tool.

Q: Could delete be added to the Streamline Tools? This way I could have delete on tapped, but when held down I could Merge verts/Collapse edges&faces or whatever else is thematically related.
A: Not sure your intention. But 'Delete' is just a command tool so you should be able to set it to the 'On Tapped' event of any streamline tool.
  • Michael Knubben
-It's a streamline tool, though. And I want it to continue to function as it does, but when I tap it I want the visual tool. Is that possible?

-Also, pressing a number during chamferring exits the tool. I'd like to preview it dynamically as well.
edit: I wasn't very clear, so here's a screenshot of the settings:

    https://dl.dropbox.com/u/17715/VW_Chamfertapped.png

-Edit: another thing I ran into, and this may be because I don't understand the system fully (let me know!), but I've set this up:

    https://dl.dropbox.com/u/17715/VW_Collapse_highlight.png

-And Collapse only works on my selection, not a highlighted component. Also, is there really no collapse for faces? I tried just using edge collapse, but that didn't work. It seems to me that would be really useful?
-I also noticed that there's only a loop/ring collapse (which is awesome!), but I'm still missing something that really just collapses everything to one point.

Sorry that I'm asking all this at once, but I'm just really getting into the customisation of vw!

-edit: now that I'm making requests anyway, how about adding extra loops to the loopcut? So that when I press 3 I get three parallel cuts? In the case of 3 cuts the two extra ones would be on either side of the one you'd get with loopcut as it is now.

-Gaploop select doesn't allow you to drag (like bridge, for instance), if I'm not mistaken. You need to actually click, can this be changed?
The same thing is true for Vertex Snap.

    -Streamline tool for vertex Loop/Gap-select?

    -Select similar

-Inset/Outset tool that does both, depending on which direction the user drags in? I'd find this very useful. I thought the Bevel/Inset/Outset tool would do this, but it just seems to Inset. One that does both at the same time would be great as well.

-The streamline tools I set up for move/rotate/scale don't work for bones:
    https://dl.dropbox.com/u/17715/VW_BonesStreamline.png

-Object Shading option: Hide wireframe (and verts) on viewport translation (rotation/zooming/panning).
    -Turn off verts in Shaded.
  • Paradan
How would I go about doing this in VW?

wings has a thing called virtual mirror, you select a face and it mirrors the object at that face,
    vm1.jpg

but it also mirrors all the changes you make while its active ( you can work on either side)

    vm2.jpg

whats the VW equivalent of this?

vw has 2 ways of doing this depending on if you starting with only half the mesh, or with a whole mesh.

if you only got half the mesh.

    geometry> symmetry cut.

in the case of a full mesh, you can center select a edge and go geometry, select calculate geometry topologically.

i actually made my own streamline tool for these tools that, has calculate geometry topologically on lmb and mmb and rmb are the 2 symmetry cuts, than i use the scroll wheel for scrolling thorough the symmtery axis used my the symmetry cut tools.

nither one of these is exactly what you want, but you can still accompilsh similar things with them, and that wings feature would be a cool one too.
  • Paradan
    cool thnks,
I had seen the symmetry thing and figured that was what I wanted. Ill play around with this weekend

Setings are still just changing randomly (at home and at work). There are a lot of junk (empty) streamline tools, and the ones I'd set up are gone. I've tried re-importing the settings I exported, but no change.
  • IStonia
Can you send me the exported file? And please let me know which tool is missing. There could be a bug some where.

    new update.
    http://www.digitalfossils.com/Download/VoidWorld-Jun-07-12.rar

    Summary of changes:
    * --To select all vertices in a loop, click one vertex then LMB double click the adjacent vertex. --To select a range of vertices in a loop, click the first vertex then LMB double click the last vertex. --To select gap vertices in a loop, click one vertex then MMB double click the next vertex in the gap.
    * Two new streamline basic tools. Vertex_RangeLoop_Select, Vertex_GapLoop_Select.
    * Edge chamfer tool is improved. Scroll WMB or hit a number key to change segments during the operation.
    * Vertex Mode > Geometry > Collapse is replaced by Geometry > Common Commands n Tools > Collaps. It works on vertex/edge/polygon modes.
    * Loop edges can be cut out without activating any basic stream line loop-cut tools. Activate a streamline tool which contains any basic stream line loop-cut tools, move cursor over an edge then hit a number key.
    * Polygon Inset tool is improved. Initial drag direction will determine Inset/Outset style.
    * View > Object Shading > Hide Edge/Vertex On Viewport Navigating.
    * Selection > Select Similar. The threshold value can be adjusted in Preference.

Realtime feedback on number of cuts is much nicer, thanks. Could this be added to loopcut as well? Unless it's because of my settings, but for me it still exits the tool when I press a number key.

Inset/Outset is great. Loving it. Could we also get one which does both? It'd be useful for creating supporting loops on both sides.
    Hiding vert/edge: perfect!

Anyway, I'll try to clarify my other points:

-On the chamfer tool, I want tapping f to go to the chamfer visual tool. By default it's set up to do so with the re-direct function, but is there no way to do this with 'on tapped'? This way, it would go to the streamline tool when you hold F and do something, but if just tap f (press and release quickly without moving the mouse) I'd like to get the visual tool.
Is this just not how the system works? I think it could be a useful way to get more out of just a few shortcuts, in the same way in which pressing c with an edge-selection connects those edges, but holding c down still allows acces to the streamline tools!

    -The image you quote (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/17715/VW_Collapse_highlight.png)
was meant to go with this bit:
And Collapse only works on my selection, not a highlighted component.

Some other consistency issues I noticed:

Gaploop for vertices is now done with double-clicking mmb, but this does not work for faces or edges (makes sense as it ring-selects)
Chamfer uses the WMB for adding loops, but this doesn't work in Loopcut.
After loopcut, the newly created loop is not selected.

edit: I was expecting a different result from the outset tool in this case, what do you guys think? When there's no outside mesh it's great that it extends, but here I'd just expect it to follow the contour of the existing geometry.

-it seems the Tweak_move_pointpickthrough and Tweak_move_pickthrough tools no longer work with WMB for scaling their influence?

Ah, there's a Collapse for all subobjects, I must have missed that. Also, the Tweak_Move tools seem to be working fine, not sure what I was doing wrong before.

One thing I keep running into is having to toggle the Polygon Grouping Options. What do you guys think, should we have seperate tools for 'By Polygon Selection' and 'By Individual Polygon'? Or just expand upon the concept of pressing other buttons while doing an action (WMB or number keys for number of loopcuts/chamfers)? Perhaps have space-bar toggle between the settings, because it's always available under your thumb?
