I don't think that is entirely true anymore. Certainly early on they shied away from anything that stood out too much from the original design or color palette, but looking at a lot of the winners...

Split the difference on the grass and desaturate the dirt a touch instead. It no longer complements the palette used in the rest of the scene.

Yeah. that breastplate/scale mail torso texture, like the default textures for a lot of other characters, is pretty out of sync with the rest of the design and kind of sticks out like a sore thumb....

Only thought on this latest version is to maybe darken/desaturate the red a bit and bring in the green from the eyes somewhere for a little detail or two. Overall just a really strong entry though.
