I think the dota2 in-game compiler makes an alpha by default in the VMT since you have to export with the alpha channel even if you are not using it, at least it has with some barb wire and hay tests...

Sure thing, a good trick to make the mirrored sections look more unique is to move the verts some and deform the mesh a bit without warping the UVs too much. ;)
