View Full Version : Why is my model looking so blocky?

Hey guys,

So I'm modeling my first legit character. I'm trying to make it have good topology and everything. For some reason it's looking super blocky though. Will this go away once I start texturing?

I added this little piece to the shoulder and merged the vertexes but it doesn't seem to blend in with the rest of the character. I can't just add pieces like that right? I have to extrude them I guess or is there some other way to fix it.

Edit mode > select the face and the other faces around it > press W> select "smooth"

Hm, you just added it in? If it's a part of the skin (I'm assuming that's what it is, and not a shoulder pad :P), then you're gonna need to merge the vertices. Select the verts you want to merge, then Mesh>Merge. You might need to open the channel box and increase the Threshold (1 usually works) if you're merging lots at once.

Then you just need to soften those edges

try selecting the face and flipping its normals then soften the edges again, or delete and extrude.

Worry more about the normals/shading until much later. Newly added edges don't always pop in the way you actually need them. Personally, I reset everything to hard edges periodically until I have good base forms (when it's not distracting to be smoothed).

i just leave everythign hard till i get to UV mapping, than if im baking a normal map, i harder all my UV borders
