Looking really good. I love the style and colors. Not sure about the dark "clouds" on the wall though. Are these supposed to be shadows? If it's to add a worn-out look to the wall, you should place it more carefully and maybe tone it down a bit? The stones at the bottom of the wall also look awfully flat.
Other than that it's a great start. Looking forward to see more.

Looking great so far. Love the style.
I know its all still early stages, but the texture on the rocks looks really blurry at the moment.

thanks :) In fact Im not sure about the rocks on walls, I did some detail like Tridition cartoom texture, but then i think is just lost the original style, so i leave is flat , jus tcolor, but ..i can try some other idea later

really digging the style. but I feel like the sky and ground textures could use a little love? Possibly some more distanced mountains or some clouds. Its just such a large percentage of the picture ya know?
Could be nice to bring in some more contrast, perhaps lower the tonemapper in post? Idk if you were still looking for crit

In fact for the floor, the sky is quite flat and empty ,is the original idea from Chinese tridition painting, is call Liu Bai, means leave white on paper. is kind of make more contrast between detail and background, and I want keep it :)
and for the overall Tonemaper,I think little bite over, maybe my monitor is too grey now, I should turn it little down. Thanks you comment

I thought I'd quickly throw together some ideas for you:

It's definitely not the most polished paintover but I hope I got the idea across. It's a great piece of artwork you have there and I feel it's a bit underepresented right now with the bland lighting and the lack of sky altogether.
You may want to look into "kung-fu panda" and "road to Eldorado" for some sky and clouds reference. Road to Eldorado concept art had some awesome stylized clouds.
Anyway this is already very-very good. Best of luck:)

Hey man, no sweat. I see the point. In fact I even enforced it in other conversations a while back.) But just in case I'll share with you what I realized for myself later on and you can decide what to do with it.
The basic question here is does your audience care as much for your inspiration as you do? One of the things I've had to learn over time is to treat my artwork as a completely independent, self-sufficient piece because that is the way the audience generally perceives it. No one cares how close you are to the source if the work is not good enough. In fact no one ever cares about anything about your work, but it making an impression completely on it's own.
I've neglected some things in favor of the original sometimes and generally it came at the expense of beauty. Which now seems utterly irrational for me as an artist. I also now don't think that changing the original to make it prettier is defying it, but rather refining it and building up on it. And that is nothing but a good thing.
I can totally see how you might want to leave things the way they are. It also has to do with motivation, because when you think you've wrapped the project it's pretty hard to make yourself come back for another chunk of work. So I just thought I'd give you an opinion that might come in handy if not now then sometime later)
cheers. and congrats on a job well done:)

I don't think an environment has ever hit me so hard.. but this is just stunning. I'm seriously in love with this design, I don't even know your reference - gonna have to go find it now (lol, or just watch it, thanks for the link : ]). From the first pan-through to the last, the fish really added to the mood.
What really sticks out like a sore thumb to me while watching this: at about 45 seconds and again at 1:52, there is a reed plant that passes through a rock. Also the reed plants next to the man show that they are planes at one point - I'd suggest lining up better for that camera shot, or just making them cross planes or billboards.
Please pour more of this into my eyes!

Seems like it's all been said before, but this is absolutely amazing!
One thing I really liked from the movie you're referencing is the thick, moving fog that's blanketing the landscapes.
This shot illustrates what I like about it the most:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/453193/tmp/sealedbookthumb.jpg
I like the subtle fog sitting on top of the river in your scene, but perhaps adding some fog planes with animated uvs would look nice.
@ d1ver: I respectfully disagree with some of your points about the sky and clouds. I do agree with your idea of a more obvious pathway leading the viewer to the bridge. I believe we need to get away from the idea that stylized work needs to follow the same guidelines laid down by other games and movie trends. We should always be looking for new pools of inspiration to draw from, not just from current popular culture and media too. There's a wealth of untapped resources(Baolong's references included!) that we should be absorbing to further our art as well as the trends of creative industries! Sadly, some of that goes out the window with production art, but when making personal work, it seems fitting to try new things. Just my thoughts :D
Now I must watch Legend of Sealed Book!

I really love this piece, the mood is incredible, this is art.
And I don't really like the idea of adding super-cliche japanese/toon clouds and god-rays stuff.
It is such beautiful as it is, there is no need to fill it with unnecessary details. :)

To compromise our art with a customer/audience in mind is something we have to do at work, when it comes to personal work it's all about what makes us feel good and what we think looks best ;)

That last video is ace. Lovely mood, the sound and music creates a great atmosphere together with the visuals.
The only nitpicks I have is that the leaves seem to spawn out of thin air but that's only noticeable at the end when the camera tracks back for the wide shot and that the little reed flower things (the cigar shaped things) are flat, you can see one dissapearing next to the old man. Also, the fishing line dissapears and shimmers a bit (maybe fixable by making it thicker?) but these are very very minor things that don't really matter. I still love this so much!

Lovely work! I think that lacking the familiar cartoon swirl clouds and other such clichés makes this visual style less familiar, which means it sticks out in your mind more. If the scene had swirly cartoon clouds, people would look at it and think, "oh, Kung Fu Panda fanart, that's nice" and it would get lost in the memories of all the other art filed under that mental category. Pulling from less familiar source material like this makes it more memorable.
The swirly cloud motif would be too "deco" or baroque for this scene anyway, IMO. It could pull too much attention away from the lovely subtlety going on at ground level.

The art style on this is soo inspirational, can't believe I have only seen this till now.
I think you hit the nail on this perfectly, the birds are a nice addition to the scenery too, reminds me of the old Disney animated birds from Bambi! http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6yR4rzhKWAU/Tt6MzmVH7dI/AAAAAAAADzE/5MWSsgnd8Zo/s1600/Disney_Birds-2.gif

Really beautiful stuff. I love all of the tones and colors, and the lighting makes me feel like I'm watching the newest Pixar movie, but something very unique. Can't wait to see more from you.
