So I am having some difficulty making fur and things of that nature in maya.
Does anyone know any shaders that won't cause everything to slow down?

Are you trying to make real-time fur? Or cinematic renders of fur. Because either one is a huge can of worms we can get into :)

Are you using mental ray? If so here is a great starter tutorial from djx:

As far as "slow down" what is slowing down? Your render times or your viewport interaction?

Bleeeh, so frustrated with that fur system right now! I'm assuming you're using Maya Fur.
I was recently doing fur on a GeForce2, and was surprised how little slowdown there was. The only real preview options you have are to turn off color feedback, turn down the preview quality/density, and hide fur descriptions you aren't working on if you have multiples. Turning density down does affect quality when painting attributes, however.
