Tried my first AO bake
didn't turn out that well. lots of splotches

have only a few ngons, project is WIP
I'm guessing, only a guess, that I need higher geometry for the bake to be successful?
not sure why this is happening. could anyone help? I tried at 512x2 and then 1024x2, made no difference

Working on a robot thing. Pretty much done, worked 9 hours straight yesterday [and into today]. Would love to show it off

Why is the object in the centre so black, this should be completely white apart from the areas of intersection. Looks like the standard surface shader your showing to me are you actually showing the AO map in the viewport there?

I assume you baking AO onto itself since Maya can't bake from a source mesh? Did you change the environment colour to pure white?

Should it be all white?
I set a grey lambert on it then did the bake. I didn't think it would matter

This will probably help you out: http://www.game-artist.net/forums/spotlight-articles/1317-tutorial-ambient-occlusion-maya-alchemist101.html

Nevermind, I forgot to use the hypershade editor and I skipped a bunch of steps
working nicely now!
