Here's a gun i did.

I was bullied into making a thread for it! I didn't wanted it to! :(
Damn cyber bullies! I'm looking at you EQ! I'll send you polack to your house!

Anywho..

This is a new piece I am working on at the moment.
In between 3d works, I managed to make this revolver. So far I only made the hipoly. I plan to make the lowpoly soon and then the textures. Hopefully the textures will look like the the render I have going on now.
So, some info about this piece. This model is based on a concept revolver by concept artist Timur Mutsaev (Principal Concept Artist at Crytek). The concept for this revolver lacked some ironsights so I decided to model a laser pointer that you can get in stores and tape it to the barrel for some added looks.
Hopefully it will look great when it’s in gameart form.

In all serious though, the laser pointer is an excellent touch. Its that extra added bit of interest on what was an otherwise boring, yet well executed concept. Its a great example of how to add a little bit of character to an asset like this, and get past the "Meh boring gun" feel.

Pedro Amorim
04-21-2011, 10:28 AM
Yeah man! I think when doing 3d for one self this is stuff people should do. Add bits of interesting stuff. Like when we were kids and made guns and other stuff from completely random objects. I guess 3d is cool for that. being able to imagine and improvise stuff.

Also, some pics.

Nice mooodlin :)

Im not really feeling on the keychain on the laser pointer. I feel if someone was going to geri-rig something like that, they would pull that part off because it would get caught in all the mechanisms and whatnot.

It does add visual interest though- maybe swap it out for some sort of functional looking geri-rig.

Its cool, and I mean really lets be honest, on the scale of unrealistic video game gun crap, this rates pretty low.

04-21-2011, 10:45 AM
haha, true. Chainsaw guns anyone?

Nice work Pedro. You going to use alpha planes for the little chain?

EarthQuake
04-21-2011, 10:48 AM
Alpha would be a bad choice here, its a FPV weapon, so he'll have enough geometry to just model the thing. It will be seen close up enough that alpha would look bad. In often cases, alpha isn't going to save you any performance either, because:

A. you're adding extra texture memory
B. adding an extra draw call
C. adding a crapy alphatest material which is fast, but looks like ass, or using alpha blend which is slow, and can be pretty unreliable with alpha sorting etc.

Replacing geometry with alpha is only really a good idea when you have some old hardware that is faster dealing with alphatest than it is a little extra geometry, which would never have a highres normal mapped asset to begin with. Or, in the case where the geometry count would just be way too high, like grates on a tiling floor texture.

In addition to all of that, an alpha plane for the keychain would be viewed at an acute angle in FPV and look flat, and limit the animation possibilities.

This is awesome!
I have two comments, you said "The concept for this revolver lacked some ironsights" you might know this, but it is fairly common for this type of revolver not to have the rear sites that people are used to.

Second, is I hope in the final textures the laser does not look like it is made out of the same material as the revolver.

I love this piece though, nice job!

Use the amount polygons you need for the low poly version, don't go very low poly and avoid alphas.

As i said in the Waywo thread, great work!

My only critic would be to texture the laser pointer black with maybe only a chrome head or ring. Personally I have never seen a chrome laser pointer, and making it black would be easier to recognize what it is.

Damn good job on the model though.

PS. Nice avatar :p

EarthQuake's epitaph is going to say "don't be stingy with the geometry" or something along those lines.

I absolutely see what you mean in this case, you made good points. But lets say you have stanchions with chains linking them. Would those chains usually get modeled? Ceiling lamps hanging from chains....modeled? These are things that would be instanced, rather than a closeup hero prop like a FPS gun.

Pedro, I agree about the laser pointer color. I'd make it black or some other color so it's obvious that it's not part of the barrel.

Oniram

rest of the gun is great too. :D

Racer445
04-21-2011, 07:29 PM
if he textures it well it then there should be no need for changing the material.

everybody should tkae from this the fact that tape only works in 3d art when it has a purpose, like holding a flashlight or laser pointer on or something. slapping it on just whatevs looks stupid.

oh, and the model is good too. :)

Yeah like I said, there are instances where the complexity of the alpha would mean way too much geometry, and in those cases its good to use. Small chains and that sort of thing would be a good example.

I get that it's not a 'real' gun but it's kind of jarring visually when there's no ejector for the cylinder, thats what the piece is on the left side that was pointed out earlier. You've just got a sticker or something on there instead.

Pedro Amorim
05-22-2011, 02:51 PM
In these types of revolvers the cylinder gets ejected by pulling the front pin backwards (the one under the barrel)

The tape around the gun, and the area immediately around the tape stands out against how weathered the rest of the gun is.

If you've got tape on anything, if it's moved or touched over time, such as drawing and holstering the revolver, you're going to see a certain kind of wear on the tape.

Some edges of the tape will be peeled back, and have the sticky underside showing, with that adhesive catching all sorts of dirt and grit. Likewise, you can have indications that this wasn't the first thing taped to the barrel by having slight cleaner spots along the barrel, with perhaps a few spots of dirty adhesive still left on it.

Cap Hotkill
07-08-2011, 12:31 AM
I love the texture work pedro!, but now im afraid that theres a modeling/proportion error.. :(
The drum that holds the bullets seems to be too small, it doesn't even align properly with the barrel, I know its a bitch to notice this now, but to fix it you would have to make the drum wider and adjust the "hears" that cover the back side of it from the frame.

here's a few things

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1725586/crits/volvo.jpg

1. wood grain on spec and gloss... WHY?? the pattern wouldn't affect the glossiness or the specularity on any kind of real wood, and certainly not a finished, glossy wood. a newbie mistake, but a 10 minute fix.

2. funny crevice grime shapes here. looks almost like the sponge filter.

3. how would this scuff get here? it's such a broad shape and that area is blocked by the cylinder and the grip, so i don't know how such a big area would get scuffed. besides, it looks oddly pixelated and low-res anyway.

4. odd X shaped scratch, doesn't flow with anything and looks wacked from the FPS view.

5. questionable placement of this scratch for the same reason as 3. it's a really nice shape though, and it may be worth it to move this nearer to an edge.

this is a REALLY nice asset though and just some minor tweaks would make it look exceptional. the shader setup is fantastic, the bake is outstanding and most of the overlays are well chosen. just a few things would push it over the top.
