View Full Version : [Portfolio] Luke Adwick - Environment Artist
Good evening folks!
I'm Luke Adwick currently studying Games Design(3rd year) at Stafford University and I'll to be graduating soon! I would really appreciate it if folks could take a moment to look over my current portfolio, and let me know where you think I stand in my position of gaining a job in the industry as an Environment Artist/Asset Artist. I'm seeing all these fantastic artists getting hired up recently and it scares me about whether or not I'll be able to find a position.
I'll be working on my portfolio full time now so please any suggestions to help further the marketability of my portfolio would be appreciated.
Please critique away, what ever you can. I really want to grow as an artist and get to a professional standard :)
Thankyou!

Hey Luke, glad to see you posting your stuff up on here!
I love your high poly stuff man, as I've told you before. It really is great. I'm actually quite envious, I wish I could do that sorta stuff! Also, your texture work on the filing cabinet is really good. Did you use many photo overlays for it? I would love to know how you got the rust effect.
Only thing I can crit really is the lack of content. Could do with a few more environments! You say you're an environment artist, yet your portfolio seems to be geared more towards being a prop artist.
But anyway, great stuff man.

Really like your high poly work and the filing cabinet texture. A bit more content and it will be one hell of a portfolio I think :)

This looks pretty solid. Much better than what I had after graduating school.
Your environment is pretty nice looking...did you have a wip thread here on polycount? It looks familiar.
In that piece, the tiles pulling up from the ground all look to be the same angle..or very close. That didn't read well for me. A little more variation might sell that better.
Your high poly stuff looks nice. But I would like to see more of it. I'm a little disappointed that your thumbnail had an image of a car, but thats not in your site. Either add the car or remove it from the image.
Props look good. I really dig the filing cabinet.
You are definitely going in the right direction. I think another solid environment and a few more props should be where you go next. Since you only have the one environment, consider trying something very different from your current piece to show a little flexibility with your work.
Cool stuff man.
You are definitely on the right track. I think some more props and another environment would be good.
Edit: Forgot to add....your resume looks pretty hideous. I would advise you to not use a black background with bright colored text.
@PogoP thanks man :) Yeah i defiantly need more environments! I've got a few ideas of what i want todo next but nothing solid, currently working on one for my FYP so hopefully that'll be another one to stick on once its finished :) the grunge rust was using some overlays and some nice grungy brushes to lay it in subtly.
@Turista: cheers :) yeah defiantly! I'll start posting new things i make in this thread soon to hopefully keep boosting the content.
@Mts effect: yeah i really like working with highpoly / hardsurface stuff, no limits just pure modelling!
@gsokol: cheers man, yeah i did have a thread for it, though it was for a uni assignment and when it ended i kind of stopped working on it a little, but yeah i should probably go back and fix up a few things like you said, heh yeah I was planning on sticking the car in, but needed to make some nice new renders first! and yeah will defiantly work on a different style of environment. i wasn't too sure about the resume colours, will change that up today :)

also finish what you got...
Good work and a great website. I like the link back to polycount. I think this can definately help if a potential employer is also active on polycount. I would say, go for at least 2 more environments. Something not sci fi, as you already have that.

yes, quite nice stuff but too few imo.
The environment is not really a good example there cauz it is quite dark and unclear what it is. If you would chose to showcase enviro in the portfolio i would suggest that u pick a more "common" theme with more content in it ;)
Btw, u participated to several mods before, so why not to put some of thta stuff - it could be a good addition ;)

good stuff you got there.
really nice hp models you got, i totally agree w/ Serp about the environments.
Also try to show more of your texturing skillz you only really had a few props w/ textures on them.

Edit: Forgot to add....your resume looks pretty hideous. I would advise you to not use a black background with bright colored text.
Also might want to change "repotology" to "retopology" under your Key Skills section.

Navigation is simple and clean, so I really appreciate that in a site. I agree with everyone that you need just more art on there. Another small environment, maybe with warm lighting to contrast the Abandoned Core. Keep up the work man
@Jeremy Lindstrom, hey im alot better at that these days :)
Serp: Cheers! ok yeah the general consensus seems more environments! will defiantly have a stroll through cghub and get some inspiration, non sci fi, and defiantly not round again, that was a bit awkward last time! :)
@Matroskin yup will definitely think about something like that for my next environment! the mod work is mostly older stuff now so not sure if its really of my better standards to put in the portfolio :)
@Mistry10: thanks! yeah I'm actually working on a new scene for my dissertation so hopefully this piece will really explorer that, will post up pic's soon when I'm a bit more comfortable with it :)
@Burrill: cheers for noticing :poly121:
@poffington: cheers yeah I'd seen through alot of portfolios to get an idea of design, and the best looking ones by far were the really simple, lack of button ones.
Thanks folks really appreciate the feedback so far, getting a proper understand of where i stand now and what i need todo
a couch! I've been working on last night and today for my scene, I'd like to say textures are mostly done, though normals seem a bit weak, could probably beef up the creases in the diffuse to fake the normals a bit more? :)

the only crit i would say is change the colour of your ambient light in your render. add more blue, like a sky blue :)
other then that i really like that couch !!!

Here is a scene I'm currently working on, I've got alot todo to it, and have had some really nice feedback from some folks so hopefully I can push this far to get some more portfolio content that i desperately need to land a job :)

On your site, for the polycount of some of the props it says "tries", so unless you "tried" to make the chair 700 times, you should fix that :P

Ohhh I like the pool table style you picked.
My only critic is the third picture with the wall paper it looks wrong in the distance. It looks like every other roll is dark then light, and close up it looks fine but it sticks out in the distance.
Good job though, the scene looks great.

Looking great man! I would populate this scene with a couple more props because as of now I can see you are trying to populate it with things that you have already sort of created... and it still feels a little empty.
That last scene is a little blown out on the whites. You couch is looking a little bright and thus out of place. And I don't really like the texture on the tables. They are starting to hit that concrete look slightly when it needs to look more like you filing cabinets.
Keep up the good work otherwise. :)
Cheers guys for the comments, defiantly things I'll work on :) but tonight ... Dissertation in, time to play portal 2 :D

great work man !
i'll glad you added more of an Asian flavor to your scene :)
you should post a render of your HP model for your garage bag, since it looks great.
Also that pool table looks very nice ! in your second shot, it would be nice to have more of that red light coming through the windows, i really love ur first render !

Wow, this is just amazing work. :O This scene just oozes "Yakuza" from every pore! Love it!
The only crit I can come up with would be to add some coloured lighting. Maybe do a real quick neon sign to add some red, make the lights a bit more yellow and have the light from outside be a bit more blue. That should help you get a better range of colour and make the scene even more interesting.
Here's some examples of the kind of neon sign I mean. The internal ones that are for decoration or advertising to patrons.

Thanks Hiten!, the bag on the right is actually the high poly ^^ i should probably label them, using some material in Zbrush gave quite a nice look to it. Yeah i want the outside to look more appropriate to the scene.
Cheers feanix! yeah thanks some good ideas! defiantly needs a proper casting light, maybe some stripper neon signs or something across the ally way :)
hey so I'm currently working on the game-res version of that highpoly jet in my portfolio, concept by this (http://cghub.com/images/view/115476/) dude
heres a WIP! simple diffuse made so far, as usual any comment / suggestions appreciated :)

The ship is looking good dude. Are you planning on using it in an environment or is it just a portfolio piece?

looks great so far :D
the only crit i have is maybe having some small chipped paint on the eagle logo
btw is this in UDK ?
pete: I might add an environment at some point! maybe some planets or something in the background :D
Mistry: yeah will deffo work on that! rendered in marmoset :)
HIRED! just want to say thanks to everyone!! I recently got hired at Frontier Developments as an Environment Artist and cannot wait to get started :D
Wouldn't be where I am without the many knowledge dumps and inspiration from polycount :) but now I can't wait to learn and soak in as much information as I can :D
