View Full Version : |Lets go|Inspiration & Brainstorming about the world/environment
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s183/hboybowen/test-1.png
So I've spoken with Minto via email and he gave me the lowdown on his absence and basically has been snowed in and forgot about it. It happens sometimes. So I asked if I could run it for the time being and guess what..:poly142:. So...so far here what we have agreed upon is we are focusing on 1 environment this round and its steampunk while others suggested dieselpunk later on.An both are great ideas.
So we are combining these two themes. So think of a world where the steampunk era is ending and a new era is beginning of dieselpunk and what impact that would have on the social and economic level and why this would happen.Because every time a new industrial movement happens its to adapt to some kind of change.(example of this would be in our reality we want to get off oil so we are looking into alternative fuels due to cost and etc). An the location is still undecided from what I can see. So I would like everyone who hasnt suggested a location or idea for one for the poll please do so.
In this thread we will be moving to the next step and finding inspiration for the environment and also brainstorm about what kind of world this is so we can get a central idea of what would belong and what wouldnt. So also think about where would this exist and why and who would live here when considering inspiration. Inspiration that should be covered is:
>The People.who exist here?
>What is would be the world issue that would and may effect the environment and how people go about there lives and how they live in it?
>Architecture aswell as what props what be find here based on the location
*(example of this would be in our current society our social and world issue is terrorism and that what drives alot of issues and world problems)
So first question is what should the world be like where this environment exist. We are including this in the inspiration thread to promote thinking about a larger picture. Instead of just having a cool looking a environment there is a story being told all around you.
*Remember even bad ideas can promote good one so talk about what's on your mind.
Note: Since DW4 is coming up depending on where we are at when it starts we may slow down some around that time since some may want to compete in the next month.

NICE! :D
I've been more or less constantly crying since the collab halted!
I love the scenery you've created with the shift in era.
The dieselpunk vibe instantly makes me think of a world with big gaps in social structure - big industry companies that is conquering in blood. Big pipes going through the compact city built on height with oily pipes stretching for the sky. The lower classes of the city hide and dwell in the narrow corners of the city where patrolling guards don't dare to seek. The companies has set up guard posts all around the the city to easily locate leaks in the pipes.
The leaking pipes are most often caused by the thieving people living in the shadows, sensitive to light but agile. They've recovered used old steampunk machinery by bribing guards. Maybe they have constructed air balloons in a desperate try to reach to sky/top of the buildings where the rich peps live?
I'm usually very bad at coming up with concepts so I'm more or less sure that someone will come after me and make awesomesauce.

So a few more ideas i came up with while we were all in limbo waiting....when i think of steam punk i think of the classic bright copper clean look. almost environmentally friendly, rich snoody doody. Diesel punk on the other hand i think of dirty, unclean, lower class
So what about this: thinking of a reverse role to what you would think. Deiselpunk gives way to steampunk. Economic troubles gives way and divide the city into the rich and the poor, Much like mid-evil Europe
Option 1:
A world where the cities are clogged with toxic fumes from the industry. Desielpunk. Thinking industrial revolution America, Pittsburgh steel yards sort of feel smoke stacks, people wearing breathers, masks, soot and ash over everything.
The rich, sick of all the fumes leave the cities and create massive floating blimps (or even mini cities) powered by a cleaner, more elegant steam system. clean environmentally friendly (ish) that float high above the smog and pollution of the commoners below. Gleaming beautiful city that is the envy and hatred of the people below. Alot of tension, and animosity between the 2 classes of people. (Think French Revolution)
Option 2:
same sort of rich vs poor theme. thinking of the old silent movie Metropolis. Thinking again maybe a floating city or even a land based city. The upper city/above ground is powered by steam, shinny pipes clean air, everything all pretty and such. while the under city/below ground which provides power to the upper city is more of a gritty dieselpunk style, cheap and dity. if the city were floating it could even have giant exhaust fans and pipes that shoot the fumes down at the surface. The city could then float above this "Sea of Fumes"

Dieselpunk as the higher class sounds odd. Steampunk seems more efficient and cleaner all around. That said, I think it might be an equally fun approach to have two separate nations or races clashing in the scene as opposed to just social standing.
Dieselpunk vs. Steampunk war is one idea. Having the two peacefully coincide at a harbor or air port is another. IE, Steampunk nation delivering goods/parts/technology to the Dieselpunk nation.
Just food for thought. Not sure I'll be participating.

I like the idea of this, on one side we have the prissy clean etc steam punk, on the other we have the grosse and dirty diesel punk..
However the only thing that bothers me is that this is exactly what we had in the first collab, we had a rich side vs a poor side, sadly it didnt get to far.. but the idea was basically the same (not so much diesel and steam punk) but you get the idea. However it would be neat to work on both styles :P

Is it necessary to have two distinct styles such as rich/poor clean/grungy? It's kind of a common theme in games and movies to have THE MAN vs THE RAGTAG GROUP of freedom fighters whatever. That's fine.
But I think this kind of setting works best when there is one constant theme to the environment, and instead of lower classes having their own city or underworld, they live in the gaps of the real world. Best example I can think of for this is Mirrors edge: it showed faith and merc living across the rooftops and service areas of a modern metropolis. In most rich/poor settings, the poor still live in the rich peoples world, They're just in the shadows and the alleys.
And similarly there's always the 'king of junk town', or the elite super club owning mafia group.

^^ what he said
I think we should make some concept drawings and start out with 1 or 2 small scenes before we explode the project into some huge death map,

just throwing this out for a style that could be cool giving the "late steampunk, earlier diesel punk" idea, a truly wonderful film - if you get the chance be sure to watch the whole thing (there is an english version)
