has it always been buggy like this. btw im using maya 2011. mirrored meshes sometimes becomes invisible where i have to reapply the shader to the mesh to fix it. and the most annoying thing is it creates a node for the mirror plane in the hypershade and the mirror plane stays after the mirror cut. why cant it just work like max symmetry. sigh......

Agreed, Maya's mirror cut is not as clean as max's, everything you mentioned is pretty standard.

Make sure all your verts are along the proper axis that you are mirroring across, generally you won't get a clean mirror right off the hop either, you will have to go into your history list and change a couple settings in the mirror options. It is a little more work than max's symmetry modifier, but it does give you a little more control over a few things. Hope that helped a little bit. You can snap the verts to your axis while holding down the X key, with your move tool enabled.
