View Full Version : Really quick question. Can 3D Studio Max read OBJs by default?

I need to send a Maya model (no rigging lighting etc) to someone using Max, with a minimum of messing about. Can Max read OBJs by default or does it need a plugin or some such? The pages I've pulled up in google have conflicting info.

Yes, as far back as I can remember. (Max 7)

Yes, but the smoothing group / softened/hardened normal support is hit and miss, especially in older versions. So it will import fine, but the edge smoothing may not be right and may need to be redone.

Yeah, if my memory serves me correctly then Max versions prior to 2008? or 2009 will be better off using the GuruWare obj IO plugin (http://www.guruware.at/main/objio/index.html). With Max 2008? or 2009 onwards the plugin is integrated into Max.
