Alright 2011 edition!
Ok for the first day of this year I just did a self portrait digital sketch cus it's been a while I haven't done any digital sketching (well the main purpose was actually to replace my only-god-knows-how-long previous profile picture in facebook lol) and cus the result not that terrible thought I'm gonna show it to the professionals here too hehe..

Really nice Revel.
Something i've been doing on and off for quite a while now but its time i got it finished. Not aiming for a low poly right now just as detailed a model as possible for my portfolio. Such a high tri count right now mainly due to the wheels.
(Also had a quick play around with the vray demo :\) Any crits at all would be grand. Still very much WIP!

Oh wow your stuff also looks great, texture please! :D
Well cus you're saying not gonna make a low poly, can't say much about it..wait, does it really don't have a wiper on the front windshield? and also the area above the 4 front wheels is empty, you better put something in there, otherwise it looks floating..
@Mike
Then hurry up make yours! ;)

Should have said its not finished yet but im just getting stuck in with it :) Made more progress in the last few days than i had in several weeks! I may well make a low poly eventually but ive got quite a few things i want to get done in the near future first.
The underside is extremely busy so that will take a long time and it does have wipers don't worry1 :D

Max Screen Grab of a scene that I am working on. This will end up being put into udk to be lit and some effects added. This is my first "hand painted" environment and I know there is definitely going to be a lot to learn and improve on. Thats why I was urged to try a scene in this style.

@Scooby, the narrower jaw version looks like megan fox?
Made a bit more progress on the front, added the rest of the lights and wipers. Need to collapse the symmetry on the grill thing and remove the left hand hole as its only meant to have one.
Now to work on the incredibly complicated underside :D
Oh and if anyone has any pointers for rendering progress images that would be grand, i'm useless at renders.

Still working on this, with the holidays over I finally have some time to continue this guy.
Decided on a new outfit (again), did some hard surface modelling, and am kinda figuring out how I want to do the hoodie/vest, base shouldn't prove much of a problem, the hood on the other hand might.

finally getting some time to start baking this pos out. may need to make some cage adjustments on the face of the trigger guard and grip, at least for folio reasons... but you would never see it in game... also debating on whether it is worth creating geo for the rubber grip piece on the stock... would eat up a killer amount of geo though and again, would barely be seen in game if covered up by a player hand... sitting a little over 3k *shrug*

Ikuru: very cute house :D I guess modular isn't very polygon efficient? hehe
http://kriscrash.dk/art/2011/jan/mesh2w2.png
figure I can alpha a visor into the helmet to show a bit of face through. Pretty happy with the polygon level, so once I add enough to close all the gaps it should still be under 1k. Haven't tried something segmented before, so it's a new challenge :D

Hey Bugo! Looking cool. I think you could maybe do to use bigger harder brushes, if you're trying to match that Blizzard style. I like the armor bits tho, those look good.
Seth: Those bakes came out pretty well I'd say, although it looks like he could maybe use a little more tri density in his buttocks area as it seems pretty coarse currently and won't animate/rig as nicely as you may want.
Corv: I expect big things from you, particularly as regards textures. The model looks neat and fun, but the texture, so far, is a bit early so here's hoping it shapes up as nicely as your other work.
Oh yeah, I forgot I was gonna post this too.
Zbrush fucked me and lost about an hours worth of extra work on this guy, so I'll just post this and keep truckin till he's done.

Finally doing some personal art again, still rough, not done with any one area, but it's nice to be doing some painting. I plan to use the unmirrored face to eventually add in some zombie flesh. the idea is to keep parts of him ultra clean, and then the dead parts grey and gore-y, which is why the face has such lively flesh tones.

Fiddling with materials a bit. No info in the diffuse yet, aside from some solid colour blocks, mainly the specular, gloss, and normal maps that I've been tweaking.
This one's high poly is 100% made in ZBrush this time, character and rifle, nothing is traditionally modelled, except for the low poly version below. Rifle's a bit over-sized..
With rifle it's all 12 450 triangles.

Still very wip on the high poly... Some pinching going on that I haven't bothered to fix yet... Got most of the main shapes in on the gun and might tweak a few others to make it more interesting.
Also need to figure out the other side and how I want the ejection port to work and the slide to operate.

What always bothered me here is, how large is the performance impact (or benefit) in comparison to example relief mapping? Since this (and standard parrallax mapping) would create similar results and add depth to the surface but work in dx 9/10? why are those not implemented into dx 11 titles in their dx9/10 mode since the textures already have heightinfo....
Not to rant here, nice work, the tesselated stuff looks goregous

First of all, thanks :)
The most important thing, if you ask me, that displacement does, that parallax or normalmapping cant do, is break the silhouette of the object, that is a HUGE thing as it takes away most all traces of the edges of the lowpoly.
Because of this, you can often build your lowpoly geometry more optimized to begin with, since having a rough sihouette on it matters less when you displace the hell out of it anyway. in the process you also take away some of the need to LOD objects, as that happens dynamically with the tesselation, and the base lowpoly serving as the final LOD.
But you are correct, parallax mapping is MUCH cheaper to use, but they only work well on relatively soft, noise free and rounded shapes, cobblestone for example, if you want sharper edges they usually look kinda shitty.
Hope that made any sense :)

Jason: Looks awesome! I still think the light spilling into the back hall could be cooler, brighter & more blown out to add contrast to the scene and a more dynamic feel.
The only thing I dont like, besides the lack of AA (tho I understand why), is the little japanese sticker/red circle on the nearest door. Why so stretched man? Its painfully obvious. If this was stretched in the concept and I dont recall then fine, so be it, but to me it looks like a little lazy oversight.

The start of a whimsical wizards' tower as start of a fantasy outdoor environment for my portfolio.
I'll be adding a lot more details now but first I'd like to get the base of the tower all hashed out. The tower is based on this concept art, but I'm deviating from it to make it a bit more whimsical in nature. The stairs are also going to be cobblestone with wood plank tops, unlike the concept. I'll probably be Mudboxing all of the bricks and stones.

My final. Didn't end up getting as much done as I hoped, but ran into the deadline. If it doesn't get accepted I'll probably keep working on it until it's completed the way I envisioned it and sell it as a print(minus the logo and the text, of course). I had a whole lot more planned in detailing the blank area and the tree, as well as the topiary, but yeah...deadline snuck up on me.
I might throw some detail shots up, since all the fine stuff is lost saving out so small...but not about to blow up PC with a huge image :p

Still working on my Eminem sculpt, want to try and finish the high poly today, did some more work on some folds on his shirt as practice, but was wondering about sculpting a hoodie.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15082459/folds.jpg
What would be the most efficient way to go about it?
Sculpt it as a single subtool (vest and hood attached), or as 2 seperate ones, vest as a seperate one?
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15082459/hood_full.jpg

01-06-2011, 05:04 AM
Hi Thedarknight.
The best option would be if you model the base mesh of the hoodie in maya/max in a single piece, but then divide its UVs where you want the separate pieces to be and then work with polygroups within ZBrush. Create polygroups from UV option.
Hope this helps!

Also nice work everyone, I clicked on the last page of this thread not thinking about how it had rolled over already. Several pages in 2011 is off to a good start in less than a week.

SanderDL: there are a lot of rules involved in creating classical columns, and by the looks of it, you're not aware of them. For example, a column has either 20 (if Doric) or 24 (if other) flutes. You have 10 or so. There are also rules governing the height-to-diameter ratio, which, again varying on the type, lies between 7:1 and 9:1 (Yours being about 4:1).
Give the Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_order) a read. Your technique looks good, but the design is painfully fake.

The more I work on the highpoly, the less I look forward to the lowpoly..
Seth, I don't even know which of the parts is the crank, but making it bigger sounds good enough already.
eld <3
Napkin, it is all subd modeling for now.
I wanted to know how zbrush would display my shapes since i've been staring at it in max's viewport.
Still a bunch to do, but i got a shot or two you might like.
I started with blocking out the shapes. Low poly shapes to match the design.
From here on, I know what my subd parts would look like, and I use the low poly objects and detail those into subd ready.
I try and avoid having single objects that are too complicated, therefor i look for places where i can break them up into smaller bits.
This will leave me with more objects, but i can build them cleaner and have less problems with dense wireframes creating surfaces i dont like.
For some parts i use a FFD modifier, when needing hard edges on organic forms, you can end up with nasty lines over the shape you do not like.
It also gives you nice control of bending it into place instead of doing this vert at the time. The nice thing about that is, if you need to make changes, you can do it clean on an unbend surface without making a mess.
Having all quads is nice, but sometimes you end up with too many wires, giving you edges on the surface you do not want. By trial and error, you can also use tri's to solve that. Some ways of welding and shapes will give you trouble, some will go easier.
Just see if you can get away with them. The visor makes use of some to prevent hard verticle lines on it. You can also see some lines come close together at the hard edges, and after that are spaced far apart to keep it smooth again
There is also a symmetry on some parts to speed it up, only having to do one side and the other mirrors

Great info Rens. I use FFD's a lot but never quite in that way. Very useful technique.
ScoobyDoofus
01-06-2011, 05:03 PM
Rens: Those look fantastic!
Pro-Tip: You guys can also make a complex Sub_D shape like Rens did there, and then simply skin it to a simple throw-away deformer mesh of any shape or topology you want and mold your hp details over your organic surface just as he's done above with FFD, only even more flexible as you aren't limited to Max's limited FFD cage selctions
daphz: Love the sculpt, but I think you could push the texture a lot harder. Maybe add more subtle color variation in general and check out more cavity-type definition on the metal bits. The white swirlies on the dress look pretty painted on, and I think the different elements are all contrasting a little too hard with eachother in terms of shade right now. Maybe lighten up all the darks a little and add a stronger backlight? Dunno, hope that helps.... great character regardless.

I'm working on getting together some modular architectural pieces for a new scene I'll be doing soon. This is just a test of some of the assets and it's very much in the mashup stage so there's going to be holes and alignment problems. I plan on taking care of all of that stuff post projection. The cobblestone with waves is a pain in the ass though. I need to spend a good hour aligning all the pieces and making the seams work a bit better. I might also want to try to do some trickey with mipmaps to obscure all the weird rasterization patterning that'll pop up from it too.

Hi all, some work with re-topology. Low-poly mesh, diffuse-, and bump maps generated in ModelSmith3d.
The skin shader's just hacked together to demonstrate detail.
The diffuse and normal maps being generated. Both the high-poly model and the low-poly one are visible here.

Final tally:
HP Model: 159 thousand quads
LP Model: 197 quads.
Mirrored LP: 394 quads.
This is roughly a poly-count reduction of 400:1 with little loss of fidelity.

looks very fake
green is way too saturated
cars' extruded pieces like the hood are too extreme. the bumps on there are kind of subtle
the noise on the color of the cars, yellow, red etc makes them look 3d and not at all realistic
text on the road is distracting and adds to the fakeness of the image. if you were shooting for "reality" at all, I'm not sure

Its an HDR image so everything is very bright ;)
Wasnt aiming for realism, going for more cartoony style of things.
There is no noise on the car paint, its the reflection of the background image, but ill tone down the bumps if i decide to spend any more time on this :P

One thing to note is that the bits on the outside supporting the walls are actually individual rather than being one continuous piece as you have it. It looks like you misinterpreted it as a kind of roof extension, understandable given the perspective in the concept.
They are actualled called a 'Flying Butress' where the buttress is moved away from the wall to support the heavy load.

Love the character Daphz! The thing that looks off to me are the fingers as well. It could just be the angle, but way some of the fingers are bent looks rather unnatural, as if they are forming a perfectly smooth circle when bent.
So, been blocking out my next project, here's a really rough pic:

It's going to be a female soviet pilot, posing in a pinup type of thing. What I'm wondering is whether or not I should drop the fag and lengthen her hair? I might be over analysing but the fag and short hair might communicate female emancipation and give it a more western feel. Thoughts?

Thanks man. The magwell is actually one of the things I want to change up a bit since this would be a HUGE pain to reload quickly..
Jesus, Jesse. How long is the firing pin on that gun?
I know right. It wouldn't be functional technically just based off the length of the clip and the placement of things.
It wasn't my concept but I loved the design so much I had to model it out.
Moody, looking very clean and gorgeous. Almost makes me want to use it for my character :)
Bit of an update with colours, added a diffuse map to it, too. Don't have any textures on the neck armour, aside from a normal map and cavity map as spec.

Thanks, I try to continuously push my style and learn new things myself. From an illustration standpoint, I think that is what really defines the artist. In other forms of art you can get away with sticking to 1 general style, but I think illustration really lends itself to a full spectrum of diversity.
But anyway, messing with this still. I really want to do stuff inside the letters, but as you can tell with the 2nd shot showing what I began doing, I don’t like how it was panning out. The blank space is mainly what bothered me, but meh.
