Anarchy - Should have a more dramatic render, some backlighting, shine and reflections. Also the white background makes the contrast to big, hard to se the details in the dark areas.
thoughts on how i do this in vray/3ds max?
FUCKING NEW PAGES.
Lol, oh well. :) Thanks.

End result is a bit too "sharp" for my liking and this sort of flattens it out a bit, like it doesnt have enough depth, but very well done and very clean. Post some FPV angle shots, as I believe the detail level/sharpness is probably more appropriate for that sort of presentation.

I'm new to modelling so I've been working from an environmental scene to improve my skills. So far I got the focus of the scene (an olden shack) mostly done.

So far it's 1751 tris all up and I'm just wondering if that's good/bad for the progress that I've made. I'm not planning on exporting this to a video game or anything, it's just a practice piece to recreate a photo, but I'm trying very hard to keep the poly count as low as possible.

I was originally calling this a crate, but I think I'm going with bomb now. It reminds me of a bomb in the Fifth Element. Started out as an autodestruct crate concept that I heavily modified for Eclipse, and now I've gone back to it and made it more my own.

did a book cover for "20.000 leagues under the sea" because the gutenberg.org Kindle cover sucks ass, and I wanted a proper one ;)
http://www.multivitamin-graphics.de/misc/20000-leagues-under-the-sea.jpg
It's nice!
My only crit is that in English, we use comma to denote breaking up numbers into thousands, and periods to make fractions. So in English, your title reads 20 leagues. Which means the Professor didn't travel far.
The correct title in English is Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea or 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
hey there, I haven't posted on the forums in a long while. Been working on these two guys on my free time (between Dead Space 2!). I still have some more work to put into them both, but let me know what you think!
JDinges gave me some great feedback for Doomsday, which I have worked into this latest shot and I also need to adjust Superman's wrists, the anatomy feels wrong. (Looks like he has some sort of bracer under his skin.)

Hi,
This is my first post so I thought I'd start by showing off some stuff I'm working on for a group project at Uni. Our theme is a music based FPS and as one of the modellers I have been given the task of producing the weapons amongst other things.
As we are intending to get the this running in engine eventually we figured it would be best to go for as low poly as possible whilst still having enough detail to make it look half decent.
First off we have the Vinyl Launcher, an arm mounted weapon which will be used by the Electro class:

The normal map doesn't make much sense if your only going for grooves in the record and also because the object is so low poly it would be a waste of memory.
uv layout looks unique which is very bad, you could probably fit everything nice and snugly into 1/4 of the current space by overlapping. see attached.
Model wise, try creating some chamfers along the edges so it's not so blocky and maybe if it's a record player type weapon, throw in a playing arm as a reloading mechanism?

Hey guys, I'm working on a robot for a personal project at the moment and could really use a fresh set of eyes (or several sets of eyes!)
I'm trying for a sort of agile, hunter/killer robot - a relic from a great civilization thrown into a post-apocalyptic landscape similar to those in the movies 'book of Eli' and 'the road'. I'm a bit partial towards 13/22/23 myself but again, fresh eyes.

That is a TON of polygons for what is essentially a box with a bit of an extrusion. I would say you could easily get this down to half of where you are sitting at now.
Not saying you absolutely need to but looking at the poly distribution it seems like a lot of them don't do anything that the normal map couldn't handle.

It's surprising what kind of visibility is possible when you take it into consideration when designing...usually you're too low and you can't actually see the road, or you can't see over the nose of the car.

haha, cockpit view. Just need to sort out the smoothing on the wheel grips (for some reason Maya just doesn't want to play ball right now). The wheel MoTec texture is almost done, and the suspension and wheels should be wrapped in their own textures soon (massively tiled carbon fiber weave and rubber respectively).

Crazyfool - I ADORE your sculpt of the Stabbington brother!! Seriously, I loved their design in the movie, and your sculpt of him is AMAZING. It makes me happy to see! :D Jeff Bridges is also looking spot-on!
jramauri - Nice!! I loved Black Swan too, really powerful movie. I feel like her face looks as if it needs more understanding of the anatomy under it, especially in the nose and lips area. The painting is great, you just gotta go deeper than the skin. I really love the treatment of the feathers of her outfit and arms, though!

Hey guys, I have finally finished a project I have been sweating over since before the Christmas break. I had a blast working on it but I am so glad its over. My goal was to create a cinematic res character that would render realtime in Marmoset.
Enjoy! If you have any questions or want to see some more detailed shots you can go to my sketchbook thread.
Click Here to go see some more pics (http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1285474#post1285474)
Here are the Specs
Modeled:
90 % Maya
10 % Zbrush
Rendered:
100% Marmoset Toolbag
Tri Count:
48954
2 x 2048 Maps all hand painted except the teeth.
It all started with this concept sketch I did before the Christmas break.
http://www.onelunglewis.com/Lotus/LotusConcept.jpg
And then about a month and half later ended up like this:

Dem folds!
Is the helmet really that wide on them? I only remember the marine helmets from Halo2, and they were a bit slimmer.
Hahaha, yeah the folds feel like a bit of an overkill.
I need to grab some reference and see if i can fix that.
The helmet is based on the concept for halo 3 and those are quite thick.
Which also makes sense, if you look at how wide the skull is, and add good layer too it. It is true though that my helmet looks way thicker then Halo's ingame models. Though i find it refreshing, less of an eggshell and more like a piece of armor :)
Also, those other helmets stop just passed the ears, mine runs along the jaw.
ae. great to hear man! Appreciate it.
as far as 343 goes, im coming short on a lot of things to be able to be part of them :(

That Joker is crazy awesome.
Any special technique for getting the hair to look that way?
Basically, I started with random fine and deep strokes (look at the first wip pic). For this I use silva's brush, you can get it on zbc. Then I filled up holes and gave a more road like aspect with the clay tubes brush using a square alpha. When the forms were too boring, I just added larger or finer strokes, still using the same technique.
Thanks guys !

Been working on this on and off for ages for a school project. Full time work has kept me too busy recently to finnish it quickly so I'm happy that the base mesh is done or close enough to. I just need to add some tweaks so I can try out normal mapping like you can see what I've done to the blade in the center with its engravings. Apologies for bad render I again dont have a lot of time to set up shadows and lighting when mostly only get about 5-7 hours 3D work a week now-a-days... :(

I looked around various printing sites (customink and a few others) but wasn't getting results I wanted, so if you guys have advice, please send a PM my way :)
love it, my only advice if I was being picky would be to give those ladies a neck with stitches in them. I gotta say tho I haven't watch any anime or manga since I was 15 but I remember a particular scene from a famous one in "Blade of the Immortal" *cody's book" a character in the book has similar features like yours.
Maybe ref it but then idk what direction you want to take this in but it looks sick!

Illusion: totally awesome sculpting buddy really like the snake motif at the middle. If I had to make a crit I would say make the cuts on the feather bits that come off the sides of the shield more tooled looking. at the moment they are very organic and kinda clash with the rest of the shield, if they were paralell and of equal depth I think that section would fit in much better. awesome none-the-less
You are right. Thank you :)
I finished the sketch and now will do retopology and try to fix long feathers on wings and tail

I'm working on a website. People said I couldn't make a layout that's usable on both desktops and mobile devices. Well fuck those people.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/448525/keep/pixelsna_layout_003.png
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/448525/Portfolio%202011_003/test.html
It theoretically scales down to 240 pixels wide (the smallest I've tested though, is 320x480 on my phone). And it scales up to infinity, with a maximum of 1200px wide content. Whole site weighs under 400KB with 8 thumbnails, so it's a reasonably sized download too.
(IE 6 and 7 screw up though. Still have to get some decent degradation for those two. It runs fine on the latest IE/FF/Chrome/Safari/Opera.)
Edit: oh yeah, very important: It allows you to set focus to 9 different parts of the image, so when scaling down the most important part of the pic stays in view. Context-aware thumbnails, who'd've thunk?

Aye I think It'd be best, yeah currently untextured assets, will be doing some basic unwrapping and wood texture passes on them. Alongside that I might move the door back to the wall or make a new one (on the left, because it looks like the door-frame is actually coming out too)

Scimitars don't have sheaths
@Stinger,
what you are doing is great,
but i think crazyfool has triggered some "i have to do this under 2 hours" in a few people. which is fine! but,
crazyfool is experienced with his shapes and anatomy.
Therefor he knows what he is looking for.
But by trying to rush into these quickies with people still learning,
im afraid you will pick up less from these sculpts then if you were to gather references from all over and spend two hours on getting a single shape right.
You/otherpeople might even develope a missunderstanding of structures because you try and go fast, while going slow will show you all its secrets.
Quick sculpts are a great way to practice workflow, but i would say that step comes after getting good results. You can sculpt on a shape for a while and find out a lot about brushes and so on, and it is not bad to try a fast one here and there, but limit them, take a day instead of 2 hours.
There are always mixed ideas of learning from quickies or slow processes.
I prefer to stare at something and tweak it a thousand times to get it right,
cause i feel in the end you have a better understanding of it's structure then rushing it multiple times.
Looking at the video, i would say you work way too early in a high subd level.
Therefor you miss out on the important shapes. (you got the rough shapes and details but not the mid level)
Block out shapes in a low level first, it goes way faster and it will help you find the shapes you need. and btw, you work upsidedown alot.. damn :D
i hope it makes a bit of sense and helps :)

I've been revamping a building I made a few weeks ago. There's still a few things that have to be added (specular maps, roof, pavement, fire escape stairs, some decorative panels to reduce repetition, etc.) but I'm starting to be happy with the overall shape.
Crits are very welcome :) Ignore the lightmass issues tho, I'm still trying to get rid of them.

@Rens: Agreed. totally get what your sayin.
I realise these studies are rushed and my anatomy isn't right. but what i've found in doing these studies is that my workflow in ZBrush has improved massively. I have been learning bits about anatomy and i realise i'm not spending any time to understand the forms. I have been meaning to create a Skull and building up muscle and flesh. With special focus on each anatomical detail. Maybe i'll do that next.
thanks for the feedback man.
Good to hear man, keep it up!

Scimitars don't have sheaths
Yea, I'm not sure i agree with that. Modern reproductions have sheaths with straps on one side, effectively a three sided sheath. They probably were wrapped and held together with straps or maybe camel hide. Google images offer solutions. Generally, but not always, weaponsmiths attempt at making their stuff with authentic realism. With that in mind, I would suggest research what the leather of the day was and try to envision a workable design around that. I always figured that they had a broad strap with sword hangers built in. Since they are found in a very dry climate, i dont think rust was much of a concern. They do have oils though as oils are very prevalent in that part of the world.

I really hope it hasnt come across that way :( They are just supposed to be quick throw away doodles that you can learn from, not masterpieces. I know Im learning alot from doing them and watching everyone elses timelapses over at GA. I agree its not the only way to learn but they are only for fun and as I said when starting it, if you go over the time limit, then great :)

02-10-2011, 07:08 PM
@Rens, (and Crazyfool etc),
first off, and I'm truly not being sarcastic here, but are you aware of the daily speed sculpting (http://www.gameartisans.org/forums/showthread.php?t=18503) thread going on at GA? It's just that from your wording it sounds like your saying people have seen a few sculpts pop up and thought it was fun when in fact there is some point and a bit of decent C&C going on there. But that's just how I read your post so if you're aware of it already cool.
while I certainly understand your point of view in regards to Stinger's post and a few of the others that have been popping up (which should really be in the sculpting thread but whatever) I have to somewhat disagree with how it effects your ability to learn. I started doing daily's as practice just before Crazyfool's thread started and have found them extremely helpfull in improving workflow and basic anatomy/shapes.
just as an example, the left is from Jan 13, and the right is from Feb 8:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b236/mrsunfish/1month.jpg
now, I'm not saying that everybody learns at the same pace, or "Hey pay attention to how awesome I think I am!" but I do think that theere's a signifigant improvement in my own work as a direct result of these daily's and in most of the other artists contributing to that thread as well
Ultimately I guess it does come down to what you said,
There are always mixed ideas of learning from quickies or slow processes. I prefer to stare at something and tweak it a thousand times to get it right, cause i feel in the end you have a better understanding of it's structure then rushing it multiple times.
I guess I'm trying to say that speedies can be just as helpfull as slow and methodical.
