Here is an update, I painted some more AO into the textures. Also stylized the building more. Pretty much done now. Hope you guys like :)

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/50644653/web_11_29.jpg

damn, it looks good man. One thing I would say is that you haven't taken full advantage of presenting it on a 2d plane, meaning I think you could make the composition better. Right now there's a big tangent on the building and the foreground post. I would try some different angles and what not.

Skiv looking awesome.

Screw, ditto with everyone else. How'd you get that specular looking so awesome?

Ruz
11-30-2011, 03:25 PM
skiv - yeah it wasn't that the hands themselves were overdone somehow it was just the feet being tiny seems a bit odd on a character so bulky. I thought a big pair of humungous boots might look better.
Carpet slippers are fine too though :).

Sorry to keep everyone in suspense. Ha! I looked up a lot of reference while painting. I also found a couple really good tutorials from fellow polycounters that i took and ran with. Here's the flats, i only made a diffuse, no spec, and the unwrap is a little poopy (but it was easy to paint on). It was meant mostly to be a painting exercise. Enjoy!

Great stuff everyone!!

dummyyou -- Really nice, I love the look of your insanely saturated colours! Really feels like a feast for the eyes!

jramauri -- The face on your model is great, but you need to work on getting that feeling into the rest of the body. If you haven't done this already, I'd suggest sketching out the pose you want loosely, pose it out yourself, and/or find good reference of the pose you want. Don't be afraid to really push and pull what you have now to get it how you want.

UDK allows to render frame by frame:
The Command Line Arguments (http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/CommandLineArguments.html) that are used in this process are:

ResX= - Set horizontal resolution for game window.
ResY= - Set vertical resolution for game window.
BENCHMARK - Run game at fixed-step in order to process each frame without skipping any frames. This is useful in conjunction with DUMPMOVIE options.
DUMPMOVIE - Dump rendered frames to files using current resolution of game.
NOTEXTURESTREAMING - Disable texture streaming. Highest quality textures are always loaded.
MAXQUALITYMODE - Forcibly overrides certain system settings to their highest quality regardless of performance impact.

http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/CapturingCinematicsAndGameplay.html

You'd have to set up Cameras and Lighting before hand though, since this is obviously for Gamemode.

I'd be interested to see how your model looks in CryEngine just for comparisons sake. Your UDK shaders are pretty much perfect already on this :)

This has been a pretty amazing week of WAYWO O_O I just wanted to pretty much tell everyone that their work is amazing (... evverrryyyy onnnneeeee *shifty eyes*)

Here's what I've been working on:

I need to finish up my sculpting before me move apartments on the 5th D:I think this is about 95% done in terms of digital sculpting.

I think the head and neck could stand some work, and a final polish pass on the robes which look a bit lumpy.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eXPTskR1J54/TtfXwMxK7eI/AAAAAAAAANE/m6U4WAD5vV4/s1600/95PercDone.jpg

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9qoSRGHBr1w/TtfXwQgKFoI/AAAAAAAAANM/4li_zQ6vriw/s1600/95PercDone2.jpg

Edit: oh and if anyone has an quick tips on how I could polish up his lump-o-robe, by all means hit me up in a PM. I think what I'm going to end up doing is masking off folds and messing around with smooth and the polish brushes a bit.

There's a cool clay polish button in r4 I might mess around with as well.

Here is what I'm doing so far, it's pretty much a modular kit that allows me to create lots of different variations of houses. Right now it's the same house everywhere mainly because I'm trying to finalize textures and get a feel for the colors and shapes. Eventually it'll evolve into different modular pieces that allows me to puzzle together lots of different shaped buildings.

Obviously it has lots of things that are not fixed yet.

@felipefrango I placed those by hand, tried a few different methods but I couldn't get anything looking like what I wanted. So it was a pretty time consuming process :P took me several hours to do that much. Thought about doing a retopo of the arm and doing each link a face and then extruding and rotating but the test didnt turn out too well, so uneven when I did the size of each face by approximation. So I just duplicated and moved those suckers :P

A little cross post from my sketchbook
Next up is a project that I am very excite to work on! Shenmue is one of the main reasons I wanted to get into the game industry. I want to just start making different props and buildings from the game and hopefully it will turn into a full blown re-imaging of Yokosuka.

My only issue is the amount of photosourceing I had to do for this prop. Of course it is edited and not just slapped on without a care but I am not quite sure if a high poly wood plank and concrete block is worth it for such a small prop in a huge scene. What do you guys think?

Seeing how many people are interested in lloyd's script, I just realized that I could share something that I don't know if many fellows here are aware of.

Zbrush can do perfect tileabe textures. Just use 2.5d brushes and canvas scroll, like shown on my mini-tut below. Hope this can useful.

http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/aa426/jramauri/Tutorial-1.jpg

By the way, for Zbrush, tilde key is always the key to the LEFT of number 1 on keyboard, no matter what's your KB language.

I've been working on a script for Photoshop that gives you an edgeless canvas,
so what you paint over an edge goes onto the other side, to help with tiling textures,

not sure if people would need something like this tho.

Wow, thats awesome!
This is what I've been dreaming of for the past time. The advantage of photoshop to zbrush method is that we can see the tiling in effect as we paint and that is really awesome!
So are you planning of putting this out there?

aajohnny : If you want this to look like a trap room, my feeling is that it should look impossible to cross or precarious.

Right now the ledges look like you could just walk across to the gong. So perhaps slanting them down into the water. Now people can walk on a slanted surface, so add carved heads with open mouths along the walls, maybe a foot up or so and the remains of some slimy substance on the mouth and slanted floor.

The platforms can have a frame around them where they meet the wall. The length of those extended platforms should be different, suggesting that they do retract into the wall.

As someone has already said, a school of piranha (if they fit into this environment, since they are largely an amazonian fish) or something obviously dangerous in the water negates the idea of swimming.

The chains are too far to jump too, so that's fine

and finally, I think the lighting would be better served by making the intensity higher as you get closer to the gong. You've got a bit of that going right now, but more of a push would probably look fine.

And if it is a gong at the end than you'll need a gavel or in the case it's not and bit more visual information as to what it is we are risking our lives to get too.

I hope that all helps...it looks really good good luck with it.

So, Don't hate me. This is something i've also wanted for awhile now but as most of us are aware Photoshop is not really open to scripts like this.

So I came here with a mock-up image to test the waters. To see if its something people are willing to get behind.

Here at polycount we clearly have enough people to get this idea into Adobes radar. Also I'm sure its something we could tell others about that they'd want it too.

So with that in mind the only thing I can do is start a suggestion on Adobes Photoshop feedback site.

http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/edgeless_document_idea

Its quick and easy to sign up. You only need an email. please voice your opinion on this. Please post a comment under my post so they can see people want this, also if you can mock-up a better design or idea feel free to do so.

maybe we can get polycounts twitter to post about this?

Ya that is not possible with photoshop scripting or SDK for that matter, I've looked it up when I was working on my symmetry script.
Only thing I managed to do at the end was have a shrotcut the mirrors half the canvas .. pretty lame.
Thanks to monopoly, Photoshop hasn't really progress in the last 10 years imo, don't expect any miracles.

Finished the bake...fucking took me 10000000 years to prepare/unwrap/bake/rebake/fix. I still have a couple of normal errors that i will fix down the road.

Beefed the legs a bit, still wanted to keep him slim and fast. Once again, these concepts are done by Insomniac's Carlo Arellano.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14880812/polycount/beckmann_FirstPass2.jpg

But I feel good about it so far. I remember a conversation we had about noisy sci-fi detail that has plagued Dominance War, and it's weird. I have to keep myself from adding more detail than is necessary. Trying to keep true to Carlo's original concept.

@katzeimsack: That is some fantastic painting! Did you use any highpoly modeling for referencing the shapes, or is that just straight up hand painted texturing?

@dannedadon: Awesome. She's my favorite character from the series. :) Personally I like number 3 the most. Changes up the characters silhouette while still making it clear who she is, and makes her seem a little more serious. Or deadly. I could definitely see her running around with a sniper rifle now.

@Lroy: Nice! Some area's feel a little bit busy (Her breast plate, the bottoms of her skirts) disproportionate to the amount of detail you have in the overall design, but otherwise it's lovely :)

@duck: That is some solid sculpting sir.

@CGB: His ears seem a little too narrow in profile, but otherwise that is really good. I love the proportions and stylization you've got going on. Kinda reminds me of a Middle-Ages era Conan O'brian. Sort of

@Razgriz/ErichWK: Beautiful hard surface work :)

First post here.
Working on this muscly guy and was hoping to get some feedback on the anatomy. I think i've been staring at it so long most of the errors are going right over my head.

This looks cool! I like the style and expression of this face, the hair though, not so much.

As for anatomy, I think the ribcage volume could be pushed a bit, as well as the Latissimus Dorsi (http://www.muscleblitz.com/images/176df300.jpg) on his back to give that inverted triangle shape bodybuilders have. Maybe even trim down the thighs a bit, looking at him now he looks kinda thin with fat legs and butt. The ear is kinda funky as well, specially the earlobes, seem a little soggy, like there's a bit too much skin. Anyway, hope you don't mind but I did a quick liquify paintover:

I love the anatomy studies but Im curious if you think NSFW images on your folio are a bad thing or not?

If your portfolio is being looked at by an employer, I don't think that would be NSFW imho. But given that in most games the characters are clothed, I would say for that reason, to have mostly clothed characters.

The huge size and sharpness of your images is making it really hard to get a good idea of what the model looks like. some cleaner renders would help.

Started working on this guy's armour, he'll be wearing a cuirass over what he's got now, also changed his ears and legs a bit. I noticed every single time I create a thread for my own projects I end up too busy to actually update it with anything and they end up dying, so I'll be posting just here from now on and then create a thread whenever I finish something.

What I'm working on right now is this giant scarab beetle (not 100% scarab beetle, I took parts from other beetles but that's the main one, anyway). A person is supposed to be able to ride it, so it's about 1.5m wide, over 4m tall and about 1.2m tall, all without counting the legs.

Here are some sketches and the 3D sculpt I started to work on:

http://mik2121.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/scarabsketch03.png

http://mik2121.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/scarabsketch02.png

http://mik2121.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/scarabsketch05.png

http://i.imgur.com/BEb4r.png

I still need to add more details, define certain areas and whatnot. But before that I will finish the head, then retopo it and then add the finer details, as that will be easier with the cleaner mesh.

I made some paint over to show some of the things 'missing':

That's looking extremely professional and awesome, Mik2121.
Are there any plans to have the beast winged? Or are you not animating it?

Mik2121
12-05-2011, 06:34 AM
Hey SirCalalot thanks!. If you see the first sketch, the beetle is holding some equipment and whatnot on it's back. It would need to have some ropes around and probably going inside each shell, and out, or around the body. If I put the ropes/belts around the body, it wouldn't be able to open the wings at all, and if I put the ropes just around each side of the shell, it could potentially open it to release the wings, but it would look quite awkward.

Other thing that bothers me is that probably a beetle this size would be too heavy to fly with those wings, even if the scale is the same as in a small beetle (then again dragons are huge too and they fly as well...). I've done some research and some kind of beetles have evolved (devolved?) in a way to become so heavy and their wings so weak that they can't fly at all, even if they still got the wings behind the shells.

And yeah, animating the thing just makes my head hurt :P I don't animate all that much stuff, so doing this would require quite a bit. I wanna add some bones to the legs and head, claws (dunno their names) and all those tentacles near the head and move them on a repeating 'standing' animation.

Edit: vvv Thanks urgaffel!. I dunno how I forgot that word.. (I'm from Spain and in Spanish it's called 'mandibulas'...) Glad you're liking it!

Question: Do the images need to be so wide when the character is only taking up 1/4 of it? Maybe go for three portrait style images instead of landscape? Just feels like a lot of dead space... Character looks pretty cool, would like to see a close up of the face since it looks like he's got crazy eyes (in a good way).

Any chance of a wire? With 15k tris it feels like the knees and boots could be a little bit rounder (segments only really visible from the side).

One last thing, purely presentational: the arm in the backpack doesn't come into its own in the angles you've chosen. Maybe move the camera in the front view a bit to the left so you can show off the arm? You only really see what it is in the first picture but there the hand is in front of the arm so it's hard to make out. In the middle picture it just looks like a skin coloured lump sticking up and in the last one you don't see it at all except for a tiny bit next to the head, making the neck look a bit odd on the right (our right) side. Feels a bit like a missed opportunity.

*edit*

After looking at the images for about 5 minutes I realised it's actually a leg and a foot. Oops.

LoTekK
12-05-2011, 11:10 AM
Yeah, maximise your canvas. Three wide images when one could show off several angles is just wasteful. Or one beauty shot and one wire shot plus texture flats in a wide image.

But yeah, let's see some flats and wires! It's a pretty cool character overall, and you've got a nice set of props for him.

A long over due update on my Sydney model. I'm pretty much near the end of the road. I am going to go back and touch up the painting of her face, fiddle with the lighting some more and pose her of course. This is my first time doing a low poly character and I made a few mistakes during the process, but that's all apart of learning. I really wanted her to be about 3500 Tris but I wanted to be able to animate her face and I ended up putting too much detail in her face and hands then I actually need. I'm going to enter the Mutant League challenge and the limit is 2500 tris which I believe I can do this time Should be fun :D

MrHobo, that is great! I did something similar when I was first getting started in 3d about 2 years ago. Warning, it is laughably bad.

darbeenbo- Thanks, it's actually a part of a much bigger project that Im tackling one little bit at a time.
Lol, Your's really wasn't bad for a beginner. Kind of ambitious.
Now, MY first models/projects... Vomit inducing.

Needs to be taller, thinner borders, and thicker more exaggerated straps and bar...granted you are going for a realism point it looks like, but still could use thicker straps and hold bar

Thanks! You should've seen my "painting" a year or two ago, and while I've improved a ton, I'm nowhere near where I would like to be. It comes with time, work, and practice, so keep going. At the end of the day, though, that feeling of "ah jeez, I wish I could do x, y, and z better!" never really goes away, no matter how adept you get, so use it as fuel in the fire to create!

Edit: I just checked your post history, you're the guy making that kickass Link-looking character, you're just pulling my leg. That stuff looks great!

Thanks for the tips :)
i was kinda going for a watercoloring effect but i forgot the normal map removes that

I modeled it exactly how its shown in game. as i was making it i wondered why the shop owners who sell Link this crap sends him to battle knowing there products are trash

Shield looks like it'll fall apart, strap will break any minute. handle is wood and not metal/iron. and it barely blocks anything i got my 100 rupees worth ey.

love that concept betelgeist!

jims: very nice so far, i think she could use a little more contrast/color variation in the skin especially in the redder parts like the lips and ears. also that shaved hair looks way too undefined atm and the stretched tattoos on the neck could also use a little more definition

millenia: looking good

I really like the head jims, good job. Awesome colors jellyfish. Loving it ravenslayer, oodles of character.

After I redid the head and got some more texturing done I rigged it. Still have some texture fixin' and stuff. The background is from the original concept. Definitely not finished, gotta make an environment and fix the texture stuff like I said.

Thanks for the feedback, ill look into it!
Regarding the nudity in my portfolio, it's possibly bad if i had it in a sexual context, now its not more provoking than a classical sculpture. It's hard to measure without a penis there aswell, looks wierd. It's nice to have undies though when you're tired of comments exclusively about the genetalia!

@Funky Bunnies
Awesome sculpt! Did you do alot of clay sculpting?
