Today's study now featuring pony!

http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/317/2/3/rock_study_2_by_makkon-d4g0zny.jpg

I realize that this is just a study, but what I'm feeling from this is it's too hot. I think the shadow area's would go toward the desaturated blue-purple hue to add visual excitement and contrast. And the warm area's could use a bit higher hue, flayored with some yellow-orange at a higher saturation for more pop.

The fast brushstroke is pure win though.

Hi guys,

I just realized I haven't posted at this forum in like forever maybe even forever so it's time to do so!!

I am currently attending Visual Arts at the NHTV University in Breda Holland.

And for my course of texturing I wanted to start on some handpainting textures in Photoshop with my Wacom Bamboo tablet.

This is the first result. I know it is not that good yet but I was hoping some of you guys could help me out and give me some pointers.

http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/4931/facebookpost.jpg

Also i know this is not the right thread but i am looking for a new Monitor and i was wondering if it is vital for me to buy an IPS monitor. I am only a poor student and an normal IPS monitor is niet really affortable for me. Wat do you guys recommend?

kosh_fotsirk
11-17-2011, 05:51 AM
Looking good so far Metall. THere are two things that I see you can fix up. The first is the contrast. YOu need some more dark shadows and some more highlights. The second is that some of the dark strokes in the grain of the wood are a bit jagged.

@ makecg: glad you like it :)

hey Metall, monitor wise ya an IPS panel is really nice, but if you can't manage to swing it do some research and you should be able to find something you can work with. On the texture side I agree with Kosh you are very mid tone right now and need to start pushing your ranges.

This is my first try at a tileable mesh. I was initially trying for a tileable texture, but i don't know how to go about doing that in zbrush. I've just realised that i've lost some detail, probably because i dont have the normal map applied. But yeah if there was anyway i could turn this into a tileable texture i'm sure you guys and girls would know! :D

Thanks :) Yeah, just thought i'd throw them in to make it look a little different.

I solved the issue, pretty much - i got 9 parts to tile properly in max then rendered it out, then in photoshop just trimmed the excess and resized to 1024x1024 and it seems to do the trick!

KROOOOOOOOT! Poor guys never got enough love.

I don't know if it's just the perspective or what, but I didn't recognize it as a kroot right away. I feel like the bottom jaw is too overpowering and he needs more from his upper jaw. They always reminded me of parrots when I used to paint them.

I think his 'hair' droops too much as well (once again, I could be completely wrong, it's hard to tell from this angle). Right now he reads more like a predator because of the drooping. I always thought of their hair as quills like on a porcupine, very stiff and erect, as opposed to the predator's more floppy tentacles. (and no that's what she said jokes! lol!)

How many tris / texture size are you using for this entire level ?

katzeimsack
11-18-2011, 07:30 AM
Unity right :)

The Level runs on normal smartphones.

I sculpted everything in zbrush btw, so it should look a lot better with normalmaps activated (if unity manages to support directional lightmaps some day)

Nuns N Guns is a top down shooter. You are playing one out of 4 nuns and you have to kill as many zombies as possible ;)

I'll post more updates the next days, already got a lot finished.
Like Nuns N' Guns on FB if you don't want to miss out, but i'll also create a polycount thread :)

katzeimsack
11-18-2011, 07:36 AM
@GoSsS: Don't know the exact polycount at the moment, but really low for a guy working at Crytek ;)

One can fake a lot if the camera Angle is fixed.. used unique cages quite a lot.
I used one 256x256 for the ground, one 512x256 for assets and one 256x256 for self illuminated assets (windows, candles).

Mr_Drayton

It will very soon, with the 3.5 update (wich is coming before the end of this year). ;)

Anyways, these environments are great! I love the lighting.

Cool, looking forward to it!! Was a big let down.. I made so many sculpts and normalmaps and then unity didn't support them. :(
Unity rocks most of the time though :)

I looked at the stats and most of the time the env has about 4k tris.
With zombies and shit hitting the fan we should reach 10k tris, seems to be ok on phones nowerdays.

this will be the last anim I do on this character.. 3 should be enough, 2 felt kinda bad..3 is the magic number, as they say

gonna give the lips another go tomorrow (giggidy), then give the hair a go..and just round shit out.. basic stuff is there though..

girlfriend didn't really agree with the acting, of the character pointing at "her opponent" as it wasn't Japanese-like and she'd rather see her kind of whip her arm downwards.. but I wanted to do some pointing!!

And yeah, I'll be able to do that eventually; I've not actually been able to get a handle on animation blending in Unity.

good luck to you! I'd love to be able to get an animation statemachine running in unity (without having to buy that $100 or whatever it was pre-made one, even if it looks awesome!)

@Nick Carver & jramauri

Aww thank you guys :D

@Hboybowen

As in what my process is?

I'm using 3DCoat to texture, It has very solid built in painting tools and it does projection painting (http://vimeo.com/5820395) like a boss. I use the built in tools to lay down the major details and do some touchups and seaming, and I use projection painting to do most of the shading.

Also I baked out a light pass to serve as a base to work from instead of painstakingly painting in all the shadows and dark areas. I know a lot of people like to bake out AO, but I think using a light source and a sky blue environment probe gives much nicer results (anyone who has taken a color theory class will know that shading with black and white is the devil!). I just blended it on top of my base color layer and then did some corrections and tweaks to make it look nicer before i merged the two and started working on top of them. 3Dcoat has a great layers system that's almost identical to Photoshop's so when projection painting it actually maintains the layers and blending modes you use which results in a nice non-destructive workflow. I fucking love 3DCoat. It has some of the best retopo tools as well in my opinion.

edit: here's a picture of the baked light overlay.

@thankupon@ Add some grunge to it? Scratches and the like. PRobably make it more interesting. Good work so far though!

@MrNinjutsu... tnx for the comment. will add some scratches and stuff and post it soon..Cheers :)

Gir I'm not liking those hands to much. I would put more pose into them. make them look a bit more natural. looking good though.

@Marshal Banana

My lighting setup is super simple. It's just a point light and a sky blue environment probe for the ambient scattered light. I don't know how to set that up in Blender, but the way I do it in Maya is to set Mental Ray as my renderer and go into the Render Settings. Under the Indirect Lighting tab there is a button for creating Image Based Lighting. That creates an environment probe which I set to use a Texture instead of an Image, this allows me to just choose a color from a slider instead of using an HDR image file. It's possible to assign a procedural texture as well, so you can use a ramp to emulate the colors of a green ground and a blue sky. I didn't feel like getting that fancy so I just picked a sky blue color. In order for the blue color to scatter you need to have Final Gather activated. Final Gather is essentially Mental Ray's way of faking GI, it takes care of light bouncing and scattering without having to simulate a gazillion photons and such.

Here's a screenshot of where to find stuff:

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-kLqsXQ1pRVo/TsdFokgguwI/AAAAAAAABAY/YEfTlKbB1w4/s800/Screen%252520shot%2525202011-11-18%252520at%2525209.25.42%252520PM.jpg

As for baking it to a texture I use the Batch Bake function. It allows you to bake down all sorts of stuff. Ambient Occlusion, Global Illumination, complicated light and shader setups, procedural textures, etc. It essentially takes whatever is in your Render View and transfers it to a texture map. You can also bake to Vertex Color which is much faster, so that's a nice option if you don't worry too much about fine detail and if your mesh has enough topology to support it. I only really need the lighting information so I set it to Only Light and make sure that it also grabs the shadows.

Here's another screenshot showing you where to find things:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-zs_zEjJuk84/TsdFotpxv-I/AAAAAAAABAc/7LF07ucMSu8/s800/Screen%252520shot%2525202011-11-18%252520at%2525209.30.21%252520PM.jpg

Hope this is helpful to y'all.

This is my first content post. Frankly I am quite sure none of this will "wow" anybody but here goes :)

http://barballs.co/roman-baths_01.jpg

This is the first image from my development thread (http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=91259) on the subject. I have never worked with A 3D modeling package though I have made a few successful maps on the backs of the game assets. This will be first attempt at 100% custom content. Ambitious? Yeah more than likely. The picture was meant to show end result along with a scale test. I'll post more pictures as I progress!

Keep up the great posts! Such superb level of quality and am truly in awe. I only hope my meager showings don't devalue the quality too much! :)

Some of the concept artists here are really making me super jealous. :(

Trying to work on my own rock brushes, it's really tough figuring these things out. Anyone have some good tips for environment oriented brushes?

While I'm not much of a concept artist myself I've noticed a lot of them seem to make their brushes on a per project basis. It's tough to make a one size fits all brush so it makes sense to doodle out whatever fits the scope and style of the current piece and then work with that. My friend Johan (http://johansstuff.blogspot.com/) has Define Brush Preset set to a hotkey so that says something I guess...
Personally I've become a fan of the shape in the clouds technique where you slap down a ton of quick noise, turn down the opacity, and then pick out the most interesting forms and details you can see in the mess. One of the most valuable things I've learned from my internship is the 15 min method where you roughly and exaggeratedly knock out the most basic elements of what you want to do in 15 minutes and then spend the rest of the time refining and toning it down.

That looks really cool! However, it looks a bit odd with the scratch on the helmet continuing into the holes, but maybe that's something you're planning on fixing while doing the texture.

Still trying to get a hang of this whole high poly business. A little bit more satisfied with how this one came out, and I learned a great deal (mostly how not to do things...).

@fewes The extremely small indents on the knobs and screws will require a very large resolution to bake properly to. To make it more bake friendly use larger details, even if it doesn't exactly match the ref, you'll get better results with a lower resolution texture map. Also with the mounting rail the proportions are off, it's either much too high or too thin.

maze> That bike is looking sweet. Really liking the differentiating materials. Are you using a cube map for reflection on the metal parts? There seems to be a strong reflecting light source on the metals which is hardly at all apparent on the rest of the bike. Maybe splash some ambient from the same env source?

I sculpted everything in zbrush btw, so it should look a lot better with normalmaps activated (if unity manages to support directional lightmaps some day)

they are planning it for 3.5, but god knows when that's coming out. ;) http://blogs.unity3d.com/2011/06/16/unity-roadmap-2011/

RNM lightmaps
To add more flexibility to our lightmapping solution we’re adding the option to bake directional lightmaps (radiosity normal maps and similar schemes). That will also enable bump and specular effects on surfaces lit by indirect light only.

Little hand painted scene I'm working on at the moment. The shots are taken in 3dsmax as you might have guessed, but I do plan on porting it to Unreal as soon as I've finished blocking out some new rock wall meshes. Also planning on adding candles and flames for the torches.

I should also point out that some textures aren't even close to final. Namely, the pillars (which repeat really bad, i know!) and the arches. Any crits and comments are appreciated :)

I'm with Chai, I've made a desk that's a tad too high as well and I'm starting to feel some strain on my right wrists and shoulder.

Cheers, btw your desk should be at the same height (or slightly lower) than your elbows on your armrests, this will cause optimal bloodflow and help eliminate micro-trauma to your tissues.

One of those days I should really write a guide how I optimized my work area to pull 16+ work hours a day without even feeling my wrists ...

Damn you guys are quick :D

Find your optimal/comfortable chair sitting height and just get your desk as low as your elbows on the armrests. (I'm around 180cm height, mine is about 62-3cm)
1. chop your desk if you feel crazy.
2. get a height adjustable desk if you're rich.
3. if that's not possible get a tray at that height.
4. if that's not possible make your chair heigher, but you gotta use a footrest or you will get pelvic pressure causing all sort of problems.

It's gonna be a simple guide with pretty pictures, I'm writing it bit by bit whenever I get the chance, cheers.

So, I don't post often, but several people have been telling me that I need to be posting my stuff somewhere - figured this is a good place. I started these speed sculpts with a friend of mine, just to try to speed myself up. All of these are about one hour of work, plus or minus about 15 minutes due to students asking questions (I am currently Interning with the Fine Art Dept at Full Sail University), and done on a daily basis. If anyone is curious, the count starts at 4 because 1-3 are simply trash.. not even worth showing.

Any critiques are welcome, but these are all finished pieces - I am taking everything I learn from one into the next speed sculpt. So, no more excuses:

Almost all of these are faces from random online sources. The skull is based on a physical skull, and the alligator man (which was two separate one hour sittings) is based off of concept art from over here: http://wolfsjal.deviantart.com/gallery/?catpath=scraps&offset=72#/dhg6mc

I'm going to try recording actual footage to show my process which I think could be more helpful (to point out what I'm doing wrong), but until then any suggestions would be appreciated. All of these are using zBrushR2's new Dynamesh feature.

can anyone guess?

At first look, I thought it was Patrick Stweart (Charles Xavier, from X-men). But the shapes of eyes and nose are slightly different, so I'm not sure.

really good work from everyone here :)

Here's the latest update on my mountain temple scene, i've changed alot recently, it no longer resembles anything from suckerpunch but now is based on my own layout after doing the detailed versions of each mesh piece:

Impala88: That's looking snazzy! The architecture is looking solid, though I'm not sure about the pillar going into the roof. I'm sure you'll have a pillar-base asset made soon, though

Been doing some brush tests, think I'm nailing down what's useful and what isn't. Photos with backlighting of rocks is so handy!

Hmm, those are his legs? Personally I love deformed and stylized proportions but I think this has gone beyond believable, the lower and upper body don't seem to relate, from what I see of the upper body I expected the lower body to be at least a bit bigger and developed. If anything move the legs a bit towards the center.

Actually, all the game's characters have a wide body and small legs. It's a part of the game's identity. I don't know if it works well yet. I just made a few tests on Unity and it seems fine. By the way, thank your for the advice ;).

@NeoDement- Thanks, I followed your advice and enlarged the camera a bit, but I can't go as big as I would like, due to space issues when the legs are retracted.

As for the barrel itself... I just think a robot hidden inside a wooden barrel is funnier than a generic metal one. :)

You could make a lens that rotate and goes in when it goes into stealth mode.

I made a image just for fun :).

still lowering the polycount... gotten from 1548 to 1048 tris.

http://i39.tinypic.com/x1xgf8.jpg

dont wanna go TOO low, as this is gonna be a folio piece... what do you guys say is a good count for it? been told here 400 - 500 would be a must, but im guessing that would be good in game, where you dont pay attention to details... it wouldnt be as good in a portfolio, i guess.

just my two cents, anyone?

That is true, however I think this leads to the real problem...should a model that is supposed to be a minor prop in a bigger environment be considered a portfolio piece at all? With the time you've dedicated to this specific prop you could've done more props to fill a military scene to show your props in an interesting context. IMHO you've chosen a subject that will have to be unrealistically detailed in terms of geo and texture size to stand out on it's own.

started a new scene today. My fav movie is the last samurai so I wanna do something like Katsumoto's cherry blossom garden. Here's the start of my dojo kit.

This is gonna be awesome! Can't wait to see it dude!

The scratches on the side look like you took a brush in photoshop and just started clicking. You can tell it repeats across the surface. It wouldn't be uniformly damaged like that either. Think of what gets the wear and tear.

yea i was thinking of that too...

im guessing im gonna keep this and some other props ive made as resources for some other scenes i might work, and follow on working on a scene i started this week. its not worth the time spent i guess, if its for folio purposes.

well, if anything ive learned some stuff regarding saving tris and still having a somewhat good looking prop. hehehe

yea, thats quite true... i was thinking of adding some stickers, or variations to the scratches as you said. will see what i can get out of it. but as i said before, will concentrate more on my next scene, and take this prop as a lesson haha

Back to continuing personal work after moving home. Working on the head for my beastie.

The face opens when the mouth extends fully, the 3rd image shows the mouth without the face plate. Started doing some perspective drawings I'll probably post later.
