Too be honest I thought I was doing it wrong the entire time I was modeling it.
The topology of the central "box" body is terrible. I should have made it 2 different objects. I notice myself using swift loop, bend, connect(2 segments with a wide pinch), and shell.
I would start off with simple primtives and I would always have a box at bay for me to shift+drag into position to get out general proportions first. Simple geometry with quads then I would go higher poly.
So yea:
Simple block out to get proportions(using quads)>Get in subtractive details(this is when you decide what should be a floater and what shouldn't>Add in supporting edges and fix the topology.
http://i.imgur.com/5oS3Q.png

Its pretty much a variant of this (http://i.imgur.com/YlVt7.jpg) workflow.

@Sandro That is looking very nice, is everything hand painted? Because at first glance it looked like concept art, then I saw it was in game and was stunned.

Some more work done on the NGHS contest environment. I think a cubemap will make the floor look really nice once I get the rest of the environment done.

Anybody has any good tips on how to improve speed and precision while sculpting? Since its my first two days in my sculpting challenge, any tip is more than welcome. Also, what are your opinions regarding the new scultris (alpha 6) I used it for both sculpts and I am quite enjoying it. :) So it would be nice to hear the opinion of more experienced members here. :poly136:

@biofrost - Not really, just carefully tweaked/colored curvature map to help edges pop more.

@fewes, You shouldnt really use coloured spec maps, their only real use is for materials such as gold that have coloured highlights, generally most materials dont. Well, from a physical standpoint, it's true. Only metals (and some crystals?) have coloured specular reflections in reality.

But it's not a hard and fast rule for artwork that's not aiming to be physically correct.

well and its obviously also a technical question, can your engine create the shading you want to create or not?

If not, fake it and coloured spec is a great way to do so

Yeah, exactly. Ive used them before (incorrectly) So I thought id give a heads up to the OP. Although as Neox said, if you need to them to do what you want to do, fair enough. It was a general comment really.

As a general comment, this is simply really bad advice. Unless you have a physically accurate renderer, and material system... Then you can start worrying about how realistic or correct colored spec is. This is *generally* not the case in games, though.

+1 to colored spec being important. Especially if you don't have gamma corrected specular. Regardless, there are lots of different highlight properties/colors you can only get with colored spec.

Also, aside from any discussion about physical accuracy- Colored spec gives you the ability to add color variation that is reactive to the light. There are times when you don't want that color variation splattered all over your model and having it only in your highlights is preferable.

Swizzle
10-02-2011, 04:31 PM
Colored spec is extremely useful for things like fabric and neutralizing the color of highlights on skin. That's why you see people doing blue-green spec maps for skin.

Awesome sculpt dii (http://www.polycount.com/forum/member.php?u=45291) is that zbrush or mud? and how did you manage to close the mouth?
Did you just go down in sublevels, and did it with a posing tool?

dii
10-03-2011, 07:55 AM
Thanks man, it's zbrush, the closed mouth version actually has no subdiv levels because I had to collapse the entire model into one tool in order to pose (unless I wanted to spend a week rotating every subtool, which I didn't want to do) and it killed the levels, tried using subtool master first but it didn't like it.

I just masked off the top/bottom portions of the head and rotated them into position around the same anchor point using the rotate tool.

Very nice! Quick question bud, how did you go about making teeth for it (and horns too)? Did you sculpt them in or were they each a separate object?

Very nice! Quick question bud, how did you go about making teeth for it (and horns too)? Did you sculpt them in or were they each a separate object?

Thanks man. :) No problem, I just press ctrl+n to add new spheres to the scene. After I placed, scaled and sculpted them, I just pressed ctrl-c, ctrl-v to copy the teeth and since it was all mirrored, it added to both sides. The problem with this method is that after I am sort of done with it and I take away the mask, seems like I cant mask that object anymore and it now part of the mesh. I dont know if that is the best way of doing things in Sculptris since I am quite the noob at it. Maybe there is a better way I might not know about. If you happen to find it Kot_Leopold, please let me know! :)

Nah, I'd go for coloured spec unless you're working with a physically correct shader that's aiming for photorealism.

Bort game dev

At this point i'm not really sure how we'll be animating and rendering Bort in the game. 3D model, baked animation or 2D sprites. Either way I'll be needing a fully animated 3D model to work from. And as its been ages since I animated anything I made a very quick rig and roughed out this animation as a test. I'll need to go back and do a proper rig at some point.

Its pretty crazy but on UV edges its really problematic currently, the mesh can get cracks there.

and here on my Knight and Horse:

The tesselation density is high here but i could also connect the density to the camera distance which would then change it dynamicly.

Microsoft ICE. It is insanely awesome. And cheers :) once i have the final additions in there (haning wires and some cloth + a few more overlays, graffiti, service grids etc) i'll move back onto my tumbler and get the unwrap finished and low poly fully textured :) then hopfeully once i start to learn how to setup a vehicle in UDK i can get it sliding around in the map ^^

I had 20 min free at lunch so I came up with this guy. I wish I would have more time. I spent too much time trying to tinkle with the beard and left more important areas which caused me to have another unfinished sculpt. I really have to start organizing myself. :( Anyone knows a good hair/fur sculpting tutorial?

Damn, Ben... the combination of your photographic, and baking skills makes every treat there look absolutely delicious! Did you go to school to learn bakery, or is it a skill you just picked up?

Self taught (like 3d and photography) I learn well when I can see/taste immediate feedback. I think that's why I like baking more than cooking, because you can taste the batter and know mostly how it's gonna come out.

I find my recipes from two main websites, if I know what I want to cook, and just need an excellent recipe of it, I go to www.allrecipes.com and sort the search results by rating. If I just have a vague idea based on a keyword, or have no idea, I use www.tastespotting.com

Once a recipe really strikes me, I bake it once verbatim, and then think about what I would change the next time, and keep refining it till I feel it's excellent. When you start to cook a lot of similar things, the "rules" start to become apparent and you become better at improvising without ruining the chemical reaction.

My favorite was when I HAD to have cornbread muffins, and you cannot buy Jiffy cornbread mix in Iceland. So I bought a can of corn, slow microwaved it on low for 30 minutes till they were dry and brownish, and then used my coffee grinder to turn it into a vaguely flourlike substance. It wasn't the best cornbread I've ever had, but it was tasty!

fonfa
10-06-2011, 04:52 AM
@d1ver: what zac said, it feels like it's lacking a boat or something in the middle!

Stinger88
10-06-2011, 05:11 AM
@d1ver: Yep. Composition feels odd. The image is being cut in half by the lakes edge. The foreground and background is split. The eye is being pulled straight across the middle to the right side but then it has no where to go. The right side of the lake looks odd as well. The small hill doesn't balance the image and the perspective feels off, maybe its the way the lake cuts into the bottom of the hill. Liking the style though. Keep at it.
