You may want to try working from the actual gun:
http://www.littlegun.info/arme%20britannique/artisan%20c/a%20colt%20gb.htm
Rather than making a copy of a copy like theirs. I think you'll be able to get more of the subtlety of the shape (some of which I feel they've missed).
Hmm yeah I see what you mean. I'm positive if I make a second revolver I'll definitely use a IRL reference instead of one from a game. I think those references would help with detail and better composition of the gun itself.

Had to make an environment for Level-design class today. Forgot it until around 1 this morning.
Banged out this environment in UDK with all unique assets in around 8 hours. Pretty proud of it for the time-span. Even if I'm an idiot for forgetting, haha.
And now I'm going to die.
/Exhausted.
Crits and comments are of course welcome- I plan on continuing this on my own time; or rather, redoing it, or something very similar to it. These were my first trees ever, so I learned a lot doing all of this stuff. I couldn't bake the lighting, for some reason - UDK would just throw an error and close. So I downloaded the latest UDK and am baking the lighting in there; it works fine. No idea why the other version wasn't. Any ideas? Didn't say anything other than "CRITICAL ERROR" and "FATAL ERROR"..... So..... Never did get around to doing anything more than a default skylight.

A paintover I just finished. Folks here pointed out the entrance ways in the previous version a while ago (http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=85732) looked like *cough* lady parts so I just restarted the whole thing. It's pretty rough, just making myself a concept to work with when I start modeling soon. :)

http://i460.photobucket.com/albums/qq322/sybrix/paintover_04_pc.jpg

It was pointed out at my class critique that the ancient artifact/generator in the middle clashed way too much with the surrounding environment. So I'm in the process of redesigning the generator thingy so it's not so... "wtf is that doing there?"

I have this issue where certain versions of UDK are buggy in some aspects (the May beta refused to build lighting with Lightmass for some reason), while other versions work okay. I have heard of other people having problems with certain versions as well so who knows.

Eager to see this with some lighting in there.

Hey, new to the forums and modeling, and didn't want to start a new thread for such a relatively small question. (The bigger questions will come later.)

This is the first time I've gone through the process of UV Mapping and generating normals and I've been encountering some issues with the normal that I can't seem to resolve. I generated the topology and maps in Topogun, UVs in 3DS Max.

I ended up with some wonky normals and I hope to diagnose the issue(s) in my process. I assume it's a combo of poor topology and how I cut up my UV?

Pointers/resources for pelt mapping a (relatively) seamless creature are also very much welcome.

(Yes, this is the ArenaNet art test creature, yes I missed the deadline magnificently.)

Thanks!

I'd say make a new thread for it pixelfable, otherwise this thread could get bogged down with replies to you instead of new art. Also, do a very quick search for normal mapping threads on here and you'll get all the resources you need and more.

It's hard to know 100% without seeing the source model too but looks like the normals are flipped so invert the green channel. The problems at the nose and the ears look like rays missing, maybe where your high poly punches through your cage. If that doesn't fix, post a new thread and post more images of your HP, your LP and your LP cage overlaying the HP.

Working on a mock-up for my new site layout. Taking some inspiration directly from Pior, my hero. Much more bold and in your face. Currently my site has pretty small thumbnails.

Now would be a good time for people to throw in their 2 cents, before we start breaking it down and coding it.

@Haiasi : Nice layout you got there, only thing I could mention in my opinion is the color you used for the background, maybe something a tad bit darker would look better maybe.

Haiasi: very clean layout, and a great color choices. i have few things to nitpick, but you can take it or leave it..

i absolutely hate the impact font, you may want to look into another thick, blocky font instead (unless you love the font). the bebas font is much better imo, and gives you that same "bold" look

http://www.dafont.com/bebas.font

i would also move your email up to the top, or just remove it completely if your contact button does a similar function. it might also be good to have an actual email address instead of contact, but thats preference. id like to see maybe a "back to top" function at the bottom instead.

either way, its very clean, and it puts your work front and center. nice job

All depends on what the terrain was made for.
If you want to use it in Cryengine or UDK, at this point, you will already have all the needed assets which are : Heightmap, Color map, Normal map.

Quick test in UDK just for the heck of it (on their terrain system): (Color map was Overlayed on tiled texture maps (grass, stone, soil etc...) by using a custom material node that mimics the photoshop Overlay blending mode)

http://i.imgur.com/H8UQz.jpg

Snapshot of the material network in UDK :

http://i.imgur.com/Yze0B.jpg

On the other hand, if you want to use it as a model, just drop down a view subdivisions in mudbox and export the terrain at the wanted resolution.
The best would be to split it in multiple parts to optimize the whole thing if the mesh is too big.

Sorry for my bad english btw xD

As of August, UDK ships with a material function for overlay, no need to use a custom node. Custom nodes can lead to problems even if it may be cheaper in instruction count.

Don't think you can call it finished quite yet. You've got some pretty glaring differences in texel size. The hood is nice and high res, the axles are okay, and the 'inner' parts of the doors and the hood-hinge are terribly blurry.

it's not an exact match for the film set (lower wacker drive in Chicago if anyone wants to know) but my own version, just something for the car to sit in/drive aorund in if i get the chance and time to rig it. Also still alot to go, wiring on the cieling/walls pipes, boxes, litter, more road markings, more signs, sign supports you name it, it's not in there yet :P

That's really slick Indecom. Really makes me wonder if it would be possible to fashion all that in 3D and then build a system that converted the final visuals into 8bit. You would still have all the animation strength of 3D, but with the personality of an old GBA title...

But I doubt anyone would want to go through the trouble to make that when you could just hire someone to draw in pixels for you.

This is totally awesome, but for that background, add some subtle (like 2-3%) noise to the gradient before you blend it in and you'll get rid of that nasty banding.

Just a little update.

They live in forests, being a quiet reclusive animal. They have been seen wearing various items of clothing and clothing accessories and is said to be intelligent enough to figure out what they are and it's purpose or to even make them.

Although, humans aren't really sure.

Unbeknown to humans. These Forest Grundy are highly intelligent and articulate with each other. They don't shy away when in presence of humans, it's just that...they don't think humans deserve to know anything about them.

They lead a simple and humble life living for hundreds of years.

Edit:
that's not really a proof of concept, the gif is just looping the animation really slowly, i actually get about 200fps on my crappy walmart laptop, meaning you guys would probably get at least 300fps or more running it on yours. It's actually going to be put to use in a very hefty game project i'm working on, that i plan to get onto kickstarter damn soon.

@Blaken - I really like your sculpting style and I think the head and upper body look awesome. The anatomy in the legs really needs readdressing, the middle muscle in the quads (bicep femoris) seems to end half way up making it look lkike he has an extra set of knee caps. As for the armour I like the new design , were you planning on adding anything to the arms because seem pretty naked without those gauntlets.

Look forward to seeing how this one turns out!

@barnesy - Thanks for the comment, really appreciate it. :)

I've been getting a lot of criticism on the legs, I have to say, and I was busy with the armor design that I just didn't get to it. I'll definitely give it another look though. Thanks.

About the armor - yes, I'll add bracers, though a pair that's much lighter than the ones in the old armor. And I'll add some cloth around the feet as well, since right now there's only the leather piece that's supposed to provide defense.

Thanks again, getting critique on this has proven to be pretty hard. ^^

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-5mDuZcr0dkA/ToFQ4KWf8NI/AAAAAAAACvw/_9ml_QUhoJc/s800/shipscreen_01.jpg

Dude, that is awesome! I like how the front fuselage (If I may call it that) looks identical to the nasa shuttles. The only crit I have is maybe you can make that cockpit window a bit more reflective, it looks too flat atm.

And what better environment to display it in than..space? Maybe with a star field, nebulae or planets in the bg. Hehe sorry I'm a big space nut. Keep up the good work!

Kinda sorta. They eyes and eyebrows are a transparent texture on two planes that'll be rendered in front of his face. His mouth is on one as well. The plan is to be able to paint the textures for different expressions, without needing to rig anything up.

Tiros: Looks good but my big issue is it looks too uniform. The cliff and rocks seem very flat. Some height variation would help this quite a bit I think. Also, the trees could maybe use a more extensive root system.

Might just be me, but the scale on this scene seems a bit off.
Either the rocks and trees are huge, or the tent and bridge are for Hobbits.

Is that intentional?

Adam L. Gray
09-28-2011, 09:37 AM
praetus: Cheers m8, It's something I'm looking into already which troubles me quite a bit too. But your comment just sparked an idea! Vertex Paint + World Offset = Win!

As for the root system, I don't want to make it too obvious, you see, there's only one tree in this picture, the same one instanced around. But I'll have a look at it and see if I can come up with something.

PDC: Hehe, yeah, the tent needs to be scaled up a bit here. It's something I've noted but haven't gotten around to yet.

As for the bridge, I didn't really think about that one, it looks fine to me in 1st person view though. Albeit possibly a tad low, but not small. Not sure how much of a mess the foreshortening is causing here.

Thanks for the feedback guys :)

Looks good gav, a bit plastic maybe, its probably because the rocks are piled up and not cracked from a big piece, what are you using as referene? , and you could have shaved some more polygons and get the same siluete with that shape.

Apart from that, its good to see your sculpting improving.

Damn rayph. That is pretty epic. I would just brighten the area where the soldiers are so its the first place the eye goes. Squint testing it.

Hey everybody! Brand new to Polycount here and I just have to say everything I saw in this thread just blows my mind. I've got my finished ArenaNet application to show. If it wasn't for the fantastic community here I never would have been able to complete it. It was only my 3rd time using Maya, my first time using ZBrush, first time to do a normal map, really my first time putting everything together.

I learned so much from just this project alone. I think my biggest failing was poor UV layout. Not nearly enough space was awarded to the face and the final product suffered greatly. I'm done with this gobliney guy, but if anybody's got recommendations for me to keep in mind for future projects, bring 'em on!

Rayph, so yeah, Epics about the only word that fits.

cross-post, won't be able to finish commicon so going a different way, Dynamesh is just killing my already weak ability to stop fidling with things and call em done already...

Though the wood is kind of crap. Anyone know of any good techniques for aligning photosourced textures to stuff (like bending it and whatnot)? It'd be really nice to have a function in photoshop where you converted a layer into a plane mesh complete with vertices and all.

Transform>Warp pretty much does that. Filter.Liquify too, but it's easy to get messy that way. Also, in your 3d app, you can project different uv layouts around, like a bendy mesh with straight uvs baked to your actual model.

If you have CS5 you can also use the puppet warp tool. It's really, really good for things like realigning and I've found it easier to use than liquefy. Worst part is it's new in CS5.

Now that you mention it he does look alot like Scar. The red eyes don't help either, I might change that.
