http://timdeneau.com/polycount.reptile.01.png

I think you can improve quite a bit, if not on the basemesh than at least with the sculpt, i think the overall proportions dont work, from the front he is way to wide in a lot of parts - imho

The side is working overall, but keep in mind in the concept it is moving, so its one leg left behind and one already moving forward, i think making them in a bit more even to create a neutral stance might be a good idea. If you think about someone having to rig it, think about the range of motion, having a neutral stance as a righ pose gives the animator/rigger the possibility to stretch the limb 50% in both directions while a more exaggerated pose might force him to go from 0% to 100% in just one direction, this for instance is one of the reasons why most characters have their hands facing down, so it takes 90° to show the inside of the hand facing forward and 90° for facing backwards, the rare occasions of the hand facing upwards are basicly just that, very rare and something you might not have to consider, having the hands face forward might end up having to twist the arm 180° to let it face backwards, which might create a lot of bad stretching.

The front right now looks like a hippo, reference some disnosaur skulls, the nose needs to be much slimmer, it is a carnivor, a hunter, it needs 3d sight to hunt, therefor it should be able to look forward and not only sidewards, like herbivores his prey.
The teeth are way to small and soft, this beast has to smash through skulls and bones, has to rip through flesh, maybe even might need to crack through hard shells/carapaces - give it the right tools to be feared by its prey!
one thing that might be just my personal taste but i imagine the part below the jaw to be more like saggy skin, it would be quite a bit slimmer at the bottom and not like large throat, but really thats more a interpretation and personal taste thing.

Some work from my first assignments in Uni.

Some kind of sci-fi computer thingy. The concept is from Mass Effect 2. Except for the crappy normal-bake, I'm quite satisfied with the outcome.

http://www.blackmamba.se/computer.jpg

Just a high-poly render from my first assignment, in which we were tasked to create a robot out of primitives. My first real work in Maya. So far the switch from 3DS Max has gone surprisingly well.

@Neox: awesome, much appreciated!

You're right about the legs, I tried to cheat since I knew this wasn't getting rigged. But that's a poor attitude, I will go back and do it correctly. I actually first modeled the hind legs in the neutral stance (tried with several paintovers on the concept even), but it was throwing off the body posture and making the rest more difficult to manage.

It's hard to interpret the concept without any perspective angle. But I think you're definitely right, the body and head should be slim and aerodynamic because it's a carnivore. I was assuming the neck skin was an expandable pouch, that would stretch if he were swallowing an animal carcass. I will see if it looks better as saggy skin.

a totally understandable interpretation, maybe some sort of a mix might work, but if not - well yours is also a totally viable approach, looking forward to it :)

Fucking awesome, joesolo.

Might be good to have a dark value where his shoulders connect to the torso, like a lip of some kind where the arm would atually go in. A bit more model definition in the neck padding around Jim's body too perhaps.

So awesome.

depends if all 3 tires take the same amount of power. If you have one spining faster than the other and if the whole robot isn't directly attatched to the wheels (i.e. ts got a 360 degree swivel mechanism halfway up) it would work like a tank. Wouldn't be very fast, but could go in straight lines.

I'm actually thinking that since it has 4 wheels (corrected in this, previous does seem like 3 wheels) it would lift a pair of wheels an inch or two off the ground to allow it to move forward. Good point.

andrew you are a professional, there is no senior project anymore. and I love what you did to make the waterfall stand out. The scene looks a lot more cohesive with the grouping. I'm not a fan of the post process that much, it makes it look kind of grainy, but that is me in particular, I have never liked the post process function on anyones projects though, maybe it just looks too good and my artistic mind is not there yet. just kidding, you got a lot done in a short time and any company would be lucky to have your drive. See you at portfolio show.

@MrHobo

You might need a little more geometry to sell the bevels, or do them in 2d to make them work perfect. This is assuming it has a normal map though. You could get the extra geo for the bevels by getting rid of extra tris on perfectly flat surface, which appear to be there only to make texturing easier, which is a little sloppy. Doing that isn't necessary unless you have a very small texture budget and tris for sharp/angled texture corners are more available.

But what do I know, this could all be wrong since I'm still a newb.

Thanks but there's no normal map or high poly model for that matter. This was mostly a photoshop/low poly exercise. Im mirroring everything but the screen and the keyboard area, it's also going to be knocked down to a 512 when all is said and done, right now it's a 2048. Im pretty sure things will read a bit better when I finish the spec.

Unless I misread your crit, in which case I am a lil confused.
Edit: I also see a few places I can shave off some more geo.

I'm liking the cobblestone. Notch should put texture's like these in as default. I know the concept of the game is to not look all that impressive and rather have fun game mechanics. But has improved the lighting engine, so he must care a bit.

Edit: I still think that the grass is to bright though, it would bug me in-game.

Do you have some reference for what culture this statue is coming from? It just feels so basic and primitive, especially for something so huge - it reads like an awkward zsphere base, poorly posed, and then moved immediately to the fine details.

I may be ignorant of the style you're going for here, but to me it doesn't read as giant, fantastic statue from a forgotten people - it reads as overly primitive and out of scale.

how does it stay up?

no support bricks around the arch.

aside from that just love the colours and the feel of it.

I'm hardly an expert, but aren't arches self supporting? All the weight falls on the keystone and all that jazz?

The concept art doesn't have a keystone, its like a brick wall with a half circle punched out

This is a good example of how it should be:

Right now I don't have any of the arching red bricks, nor the gray keystone in the middle.

skinning my "dragon".. super happy with the leg :D looks solid as shit.. the wings, not as much. especially the part of the wing that connects with the body, obviously it collapses as a mofo when I rotate the wings back...haven't planned to do that all that much in animation though, so the skinning that's there now is good-ish-enough-ish kinda esque..I guess :D

the model is from a monster hunter concept.. hence the blue color armor plates ;D and I toned it down!..its not a dragon that breathes fire and roars and is a big meanie in general..

thinking of doing a monster hunter style intro..no flight-loops or anyshit like that ;D

Thanks for taking the time to reply and offer criticsm. It's very welcome! Nope didnt have any reference and yes it's poorly done :P it was my first time using zspheres as i'm pretty knew to zbrush. I just wanted to whack on some detail just to see what it's like.

I've started a tree from zspheres so i can understand form better in organic shapes. I'll go onto humans/figures after too! Thanks for the feedback.

I created a low poly of this model too, brought it into UDK and there seemed to be a problem with the mesh. Some parts seemed broken and tidbits of geo missing. But in Unity it was fine?

Poisonous breath, smacks it's back horn against it's front like a flint lock rifle to produce a flash. Rubbery skin and extendable tail.

Played the games faaar too much haha ;D

Wyvern can breath fire, the main difference to a "real" dragon is that they only have 2 legs ;)
If you take Monster Hunter as reference almost all dragons in there are Wyvern and can breath fire ;)
But you are right, you can say that your wyvern doesnīt breath fire ;)

I'm working on character/creatures for a short film animated in Maya and rendered in UDK (think a fantasy version of the Samaritan demo... I hope!)

Here;s one of the nasties our hero has to contend with, The Ghast

http://api.ning.com/files/8ylrbBUFD2FVWByJVR8-1iFWuq12YRhVLKarPAJPwYfqxr9TicC-jwNGsEM2-9hyzbKpw1OfAs7qYR5H3jMztk4Lk2Kp6*ig/GhastPoseRework.jpg

Very much a Wip at the minute; this is a simple pose to give an idea of it's habits and movement. I've got it T-posed and rigged now, and that's the one I'll hyper-detail, then wait until I finally get all the parts for my monster gaming rig so I can actually render it at more than one frame a week! :D

====================

EDIT: OK, I'm fairly new here, so could anyone tell me why the IMG tag isn't working for me? :D Thanks

The lighting seems to be really flat so far. Those lights don't seem to be putting out much light. I understand it depends on the mood you want to set, but pushing the values can give tons of volume to a static scene.

Itīs old, but...

Hereīs some enviroment backdrops I made for this Facebook game (Talk or Fight) (apps.facebook.com/talkorfight/). I had to deal with huge images files at PS with thousand of layers, but keeping it organized through Layer Sets and such helps to get the job done in time:

http://amonsteria.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/dadoalmeida_talkorfight_env.jpg?w=590&h=197 (http://amonsteria.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/dadoalmeida_talkorfight_env.jpg)

The client needed some comic pages to be used in the game intro, all done between the backdrops feedback and analysis of the Art Director:

http://amonsteria.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/dadoalmeida_talkorfight_com.jpg?w=590&h=590 (http://amonsteria.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/dadoalmeida_talkorfight_com.jpg)

Hope you guys dig the game. Their post production/gfx work made my artwork nicer and the fact is a 2D game in Unity could be inspiration for ya.

Probably the ugliest thing here (no detail, turbosmoothed-uninspired grip, no trigger or chamber reload mechanism, chamber itself, etc.), but I wanted to post it for some tips on what tools I should use to add detail. It's sitting between 2,000-3,000 polygons right now, but that's due to the grip (which is a TON for no reason besides laziness).

NOTE: I will probably remove and redo the grip.

It's sitting between 2,000-3,000 polygons right now, but that's due to the grip (which is a TON for no reason besides laziness).

NOTE: I will probably remove and redo the grip.

What sort of pistol is this? It looks very blocky and awkwardly porportioned and angled.

Are you planning on doing an high poly and low poly, or just the low?

edit: normal jpg screenshot, more reliable shot from directly in the engine, instead of converted to 8 bit from HDR in photoshop

second edit: added UDK screenie

It's an attempt at a low poly of the Ranger Sequoia from Fallout New Vegas, or at least something like it. I'm positive the awkward angle is from the renders though. Not all of it is smoothed either.

Here is a head that I am currnetly working on. Theres still lots of touching up to do, but when it is finished I am planning on taking it into both the CryEngine and UDK to create some funky SSS effects.

You may want to try working from the actual gun:

Rather than making a copy of a copy like theirs. I think you'll be able to get more of the subtlety of the shape (some of which I feel they've missed).
