-Still need to fix the tiling issue with the brick on the door frame.
- Also add some more Atmosphere ( lighting,Props,Decals )

That's nice.

I'd add a frame around the entrance, it looks a bit oldschool like this.

Dan! Gorgeous work man! Totally love that bottom wall tile with the ornamental stone! Nice hue variations overall on this sheet. Again, excellent work.
Although, if I may give one crit; have the stolled lava pick up some red glow from the molten rock. :)

BelgianBoolean: Great work mate! Love the plating.

Anyway, though I'd give one of Bobo's SDKs a spin. Some old chinese wiseguy dude, or whatever. 256*128 and very WIP.

Hmm Id have to disagree. The white of the teeth is too close to the colour of the beard, so it just looks like the mouth pixels are translating down for no reason and changing colour. But I do like what you did with the shield.

http://www.chrisperrella.com/ftp/Bathroom_Potter_WIP_02.jpg

two things ive been working on lately. bathroom from harry potter and a utility pole. thoughts?

Nice texturing on the post. There's some waviness on the generator but since it's not supposed to be seen at eye level that it actually desirable, but I do think it's waving in the wrong direction. If I'm not wrong the way it it now makes it optimal to be seen from above, but for such a prop I believe it would be seen mostly from below.

Also, nice modeling on the HP scene, just make sure to add some variation to the stall doors later. o/

texture work I had help on from a friend (by help I mean he kinda did the whole thing even though I would have preferred he didn't.)
it's got alot of problems on the dragon head, but otherwise it went pretty well. will have to rebake the head to smooth it out I think.

Doing the Jagex art test, did the easiest of 3 concepts first to get to grips with their style, still need to design a one handed weapon and make a troll. Here's the bookcase anyway

"Due to the engine providing our players with both textured and un-textured version of the game, all models need to look good without any textures. This means any intricate details will need to be present on the model itself."

Thanks Tacit Math, Tomm, teaandcigarettes (3 T's...weird) :D

Yes, Another world's art direction is a strong influence for this game, along with alot of other silhouette style games. In fact now that I think about it, the main character, Bort (the demon in this pic) is heavily based on this character. I always did think that this beastie wasn't featured enough in Another world.

Tacit: I also cant wait to see some animation for this, I just dont know how i'm going to tackle it yet. :? probably in Maya

Steppenwolf the scene coming bad ass. Would you mind if i ask, how you managed modularity in cross section?
And also intersting how you made this, what you call it, lense effect on the lamps?

Ok. I finally decided to finish my BRAWL character Potemkin40k that i didnt finish in time. Diffuse need more work, just trying different approaches. Also not sure about the color - red vs dark color.

I "cheated" a little with the cross section. Hadn't planned for it initialy because it wasn't on the concept piece. So what i did when i decided to extend the scene beyond the concept was to place the four doors and corners on the grid in Sandbox and then i created a solid where the floor is now. That way i knew which dimensions the cross section floor and ceiling needs to have.

The correct way to do it (if you plan properly from the start) is to have all modules fit perfectly into virtual boxes, which all have "compatible" sizes. For example power of 2 works great for dimensions or if you work on a metric grid base it on full meters, half meters etc. Placement of pivot points is also important.

The "lense efefct" is called Streaks in CE3. You find the settings for it at the bottom of the Environment tab in sandbox.

More graphic design work here. Starting a series of designs that begin with 3d renders as a base. used a similar method to my first, however this time I used a cloth modifier on a very low poly plane and rendered it using a faceted material. Still have a few things left I want to work out regarding the type; but this is the what are you working on thread, not the what have you finished thread so I guess its no big deal lol.

Still some deformations of the components to come - this photo is the look I'm aiming for! The moss will be troublesome, any suggestions? normal maps alone won't cut it as this project is for film. I'm thinking have the moss as separate sculpted meshes, but that would be a pain in the ass

MaVCArt
08-14-2011, 01:25 PM
@benji: maybe a displacement map combined with a specular map rather than just a speculat material setting? otherwise you could always use some kind of vegetation painted script, like advanced painter: http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/advanced-painter

otherwise, custom sculpted meshes wouldn't be that hard to do: just start off by laying down a grunge base with a large brush, and then go over it to get in the details that you need. I mean, unless this moss is going to be the absolute center of attention, you will never notice if it's not as detailed as you might think it should.

hope this helps :)

Hey guys! Great work on the last couple of pages!

kio: Love that car! Can't wait to see the texturing finished!
jmiles: Really good modeling on that helmet. The only thing that looks slightly off is the corrugations on the tube. They look closer together on the ref. Otherwise it's super tight.
Hack: Very cool bridge. Good luck witht the art test!

Here are a couple of sculpts of secondary characters for my Race project:

Hello! I'm working on a high poly World War 2 era M1 Helmet although I want to add a helmet cover but to do so would require using a normal map to make the creases and all that would anyone care to let me know how I could achieve that? similar to this guy's version: http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/maya-m1-helmet---vietnam-war/361927

I'm not that skilled as a modeller I've failed quite a lot attempting to model other things like a Bank Vault, Weapons and a human as well I've been using blender for 3-4 years now so hoping to improve as much as I can.... as I want to get into the game developer industry as soon as I acquire the skills...

Hack, are you able to post the specifications or is that breaking NDA? :\ I'd love to know the kind of requirements and limitations that art tests impose.

MaVCArt; thanks for the link man, something like that will be perfect. If all else fails I'll attempt the sculpting method!

Dagon: the helmet looks good! you could sculpt the creases in ZBrush/Mudbox to create your normal map.
an alternative way would be to take photos of plain creased fabric (pillow case?) in soft light; use an application such as Njob to derive a heightmap from this which you can then edit in Photoshop and return to Njob to create a normal map. It's a bit of a bodge but it works!

Is it frowned upon to use models from games for animation? I don't have much in the way of resources to get good character models to work with, nor do I feel confident that my character art skills are good enough yet to merit animating one of my completed models.

Nonetheless, here's a doodle I did today. The left leg is still a bit janky and I haven't gotten to do some of the finer finger animations (although there is some there), but I was curious what critiques I could get-- even if it's simply "Don't use these models" kind of critique.

Frump- You seem have to plenty of definition in his accessories and hair, but his body seems to be without any. No nipples or wrinkles or defined hands. The broad forms seem to be in place, but not much of the important fine details are there.

Just some doodles for project idea thats been kicked around. Disclamer: I am by no means a concept artist, so this is my feeble attempt at getting a modular weapon system fleshed out before I try to model anything. I understand the anatomy of the gun may not work super realistically, but only really care about what is neat looking.

Here's my fav thing I created today in the office(WIP).
It's overpainted 3D weapon render I created earlier for a 2D handheld game.
Weapons should be stylized, kinda like brink weapon textures + zombie apocalypse factor.

one thing that looks a bit odd design/functionality wise is the length of the arm sleeves. right now it looks like the sleeve is too long and if the arm bends then the way it is modeled it might make it look odd with no supporting folds around the inside of the elbow. if you just shorten the whole sleeve it might work out better. either that or sculpt the sleeve folds differently so that it works for both arms down and arms bent.

Hey Mashru, thanks for the feedback,

yeah i was thinking the same, i'm not entirely sure how to tackle this, i'll have to do a few studies with some cloth around my arm, i think i'll move her left sleeve up but the right one will stay down so i'll have to finde a plausible yet technically working solution, also i'll have to change some of the wrinkles on the sleeves anyways, they go very deep at the shoulder and i guess this will cause some trouble. But overall i liked the saggy look, and this will also be a problem at the knees, i'm really not sure how to maintain the wide and saggy feel and add the needed wrinkles, but maybe its not that much of an issue on the knees as its sooo far from the boy surface.

:edit:

Okay played around a bit and i think i found a solution that might work, i moved her left sleece up as said so that it doesn't get too heavy deformations fomr the joint. On the right sleeve i added a cut that lines up somewhat with the ellbow pit, maybe i'll have to move the lower part further down to be able to do heavier bending in that area, not sure, now i'll have to find a solution for the hollow of the knee, but i guess for now i'll leave it as is and add more of the details.

@Blaizer: Nice character and great style.

I'm not sure he looks very ninja-ish and the proportions look a little strange. Short legs, big torso, long arms. But... he is/looks alien, so disregard that entirely. :)

Can't really say much about the logos without at least knowing what you're aiming for. It's all about what kind of image you're trying to convey, what message you're trying to send.

loads of amazing stuff around here as usual.

hey, Mrandk, great character. however, in my opinion, the white background kills contrast and hurts the perception pretty bad. Just put some lens-blurred Brink screenshot in the back and add some spec to this guy and you'll be golden.

premium: definitely the right, the left logo has some mad pinching between the "D" and the border of your shape. cleaner is better

that looks lot better Steffen! here is a crude paint over for the back of the knee folds.
of course it is easier painted than sculpted so you may wanna play with it a bit ;)

Here is a scene i'm working on. Going to add parts on the ground, a model of his tank on the table, and finish the textures obviously. Raw feedback welcomed.

biofrost: Much better, nice update! You have what looks like paint splatters where the bare metal meets the colored metal border on the bottom. What is that? If it's paint, then you might want to adjust the normal and spec for those splotches (find photo refs to help). Otherwise, I would remove those too.
When adding grunge to your props, think of how it got there and what might have caused it. Maybe a crate fell on it. Or maybe it was being pushed through a narrow hallway, and it got scratched along the sides. In that case, think of what parts of the prop would have scrapped along the walls.
Keep it up, it's definitely getting better with each post.

james567: Dude! Get to da choppa!!! Good stuff so far, I would consider scaling the floor tiles a little smaller. They look big compared to the boxes in the right corner. Nice work so far, can't wait to see more from you :)
