I made the matcap for this not too long ago, it will either look nice or totaly fail, so it might not work on things like you hoped. Dig into the material settings and push some values around, you can get nice variations.

(thread soon™)
simple test to check for seams and export/import process from hammer to max to hammer. Besides some minor alien-blood splatter decal issues, i'm content with this so far. No visible seams, but i did forget to tile the section while baking resulting in the odd lighting on the 3rd pic.

choco - those rocks are stunning! I don't suppose you could share your work flow? pretty please? :)
biofrost - good blockout but your door isn't wide enough which makes your curved dent in your door to round and your lights at the top to thin!but yeah widening it out should fix all that!

Biofrost - I agree with Saferdan. If you do widen the door i would also offset the center circle. It will add more visual interest and it looks offset in your reference. BTW the concept I believe is by Paul Richards. This guy is Hype! I can't say I disagree with you, and that's actually what it looked like at one point. But in the end I decided to really push it to get a style that was more visually interesting to me.
Joopson - It's not that hard to make a tiling texture. In photoshop: Filter > Other > Offset and set the amount to half your texture size. Then paint out the seam.

Blues could have been awesome! I guess really I would have just made the colours a lot brighter and cleaner? You know what I mean? I get a very Brink/Mirrors edge feel from it so I would have maybe had that cream as quite a bright white and that black you have running around the top of the body just saturate it a bit more. Then maybe an orange strip running around the top at the rim.To go with the orange light underneath And maybe use that orange to pick out some of the other details like the round things underneath the main body and have the orange strip on the light at the top as well! You should keep the silver bits too but maybe saturate that silver a bit.
I don't know I might be completely wrong but that's what I'd do! Maybe I have just been playing too much Brink!

Some eyecandy, since the screengrabs were boring
Nice design so far. My functional brain is kicking in. Even though this is a fictional vehicle and how it works really doesn't matter. I think it needs forward thrust as well as downward. Heres what I mean. Just a thought.

Whoa, late reply :P
You inspired me to rework my spec map heaps (youknow, instead of doing my uni assignment that's due in 2 weeks, with still heaps of work to go :P )
You approached it very differently to how I did, the way I saw it it is intended to be modular, here's my horrible horrible paintover (excuse the roughness, just did it for myself at the start):

Basically, all the bits that are the same colour, I made the same geometry, and sharing the same UV space, so you get an overall higher texel density. Also allows you to do funky things like this:

Hey mystichobo (http://www.polycount.com/forum/member.php?u=32933),
the only thing that differs from my version is that I split up the big container in the middle into a front and a side part. The rest is really the same. If you send me a message I'll send you (or anyone else who is interested) the model + psd.
as it will take quite a while until we are able to update our portfolio with new production images we decided to produce some non NDA footage, to show our fields of service and to work further into the cryengine, thanks to efgeni (blitz i guess you have seen his croc) we have a bit of experience in that field but it would be good to have more of us beeing able to use the engine - i believe.
So here we have Frenja, a viking girl on her daily hunt with Hugur her eagle owl.
It took quite some time to research and develop all the elements of clothing and while it may not appear overly viking, all the elements are, as far as we can say. I guess we would need to crawl more books to be entirely sure.
i think we will make her fit to the sheep i did a while back and move both into the cryengine. If that doesn't work out i guess we just going to use Marmoset or UDK to present the final asset ^^
Now lets just see if we can push this through before our current production is over :D

Awesome concept! I dont intend to sound like some anal knowitall here but from what i can gather in terms of historical accuracy is this: Armour finds from the viking era are extremely rare and from what i can gather there hasnt been a single find of leather armor like this anywere in scandinavia from the time period. Still looks fairly convincing to me however. If you want 100% historical accuracy i would ditch the armour both because all armour was so rare but it was most likely never worn by women. Looking forward to the finished model!

Oh its all right, we of course intended her to wear mans clothing, as a simple womens dress made of linen would be rather boring. We're not after 100% historical and overall realism, making her a believable fantasy character to suit our portfolio is the main goa, otherwise we would have to drop this kind of eagle owl as well ;)
Ae. Yoou want to know what we are doing in general or what we are doing right now? Right now we just finished our first production Star Trek - Infinite Space and are currently working on Sacred 3 where the team has grown from 4 to 9 freelancers. Working mostly on graphical assets starting from concepts, going over to 3d characters to 3d env, which is mostly props, destructibles, weapons etc.
Overall what we do is joining our forces under the registered trademark i own to be able to get the bigger chunks of works as we would be able to get as individual contractors. The goal would be a core team with a network of skilled and experienced freelancers around to back us up and make us able to deliver larger productvolumes, the other goal would be to push our own productions further, which needs budget and as most of us are no fans of owing money to someone we want to fund it independently on our own by doing what we do best.

Just as a suggestion, you should make small images which link to your big images... instead of just resizing them through code. This way they don't take so long to load, and it'll save you some bandwidth. :)

Cheers! For those arches, and pretty much anything where I'm defining a strong silhouette, I tend to paint the shape's base colour with 100% opacity in order to create a mask. Then I create a new layer, ctrl+left click on the silhouette layer and then start to paint actual tone and colour variations while still keeping the original shape nice and clean. I'll also often group all the layers for a particular element together and then chisel the silhouette a bit more using a mask layer applied to the group.
I've learnt that it's really useful to try and keep all your elements as separate as possible in order to keep the image reading well as a whole and in order to give yourself the flexibility to change composition/palette/value groupings easily. I used to paint a lot of studies on pretty much a single layer, which is fine for something like that, but not so useful when working from imagination where it's much more likely you will want to alter elements as you go. So yeah, keep those elements separate and use masks as much as you need to.

Thanks, I've been busy with some unfortunately not-so-fun art stuff lately(photo retouching and product design stuff for the upcoming photography season) so I haven't had a whole lot of time to do personal stuff lately(or even commissioned stuff for that matter) so these 2 have been placed on the back-burner for a while. I hack away at them when I have the free time.

Yup. I've been in an old-school 8-bit phase lately, wanting to put my own spin on them in greater detail. Really fun projects to work on, and I'd like to eventually piece them all together in a poster/print of some sort.

Nice picture, but it's really, *really* similar to a peice by OmeN (this one: http://omen2501.deviantart.com/art/Hardcore-115767952?q=gallery%3Aomen2501%2F12731360&qo=15).
It would be nice to see you change up the composition slightly-- maybe drop the dutch angle and go full-length or something.
Thanks, and yeah this piece was inspired heavily by that one. I wanted to nail the intensity and composition that he had. Guess it came through too much. Maybe I'll come back to it eventually and make some changes, but unfortunately I have to move onwards.

Really nice picture, good work  By the way I just went on your portfolio site and noticed you have a video with nothing on it except text? Is that meant to be like that?
Oh and my portfolio site is under a bit of construction as of today. Should be all done and squared away with everything that its supposed to have and not have by tomorrow.
Gav: Sweet! Cool that you're doing stuff for Kingdom Death, mass amounts of love for that project.
Medestruit: Loving the linework on that dragon. Very tattoo-ish.
Nick Carver: What else is there to say? Your work makes my eyes cum bucketloads.
Nothing special, but I finally found a small spec of time to finish up this little texture. Didn't even made a model for it, just a low res texturing exercise.

Thanks! (to everyone else aswell ;) )
I have a blog up for the project in case people are curious: http://eldrone.tumblr.com/
@Scudz: Nothing much to say really. :) I just took a layer for each element (skin, hair, eyebrows), painted on them with locked transparency until it looked right and be done with it.
The hardest part was finding the right color balance I guess.
I like the proportions on your guy, but scale down the mouth man; it's pretty huge.
@Slaught: Haha, awesome! I ought to get rid of the butterflying near the seams and the warpaint near his mouth looks odd, but you know; meh. Next one will be better. :) Did you have issues mapping the hair? I painted that a bit unorthodox imho.
@MGrecke: That is pure awesome! Love the head on that critter.
eld: Awesome! Gonna keep an eye on your dev blog (and game of course).?

There are some great areas in this painting (the form on the right leg feels really solid) and I think if you work on the anatomy/lighting on the right arm then you'll have a really good piece. I'd tone down the lighting on that arm to push it back in space and also adjust the proportions/orientation as well. The harshness of the shadow that the creature is casting makes that deltoid look really small as well, so maybe lighten that shadow a little?

Looking pretty cool Tastyrice, couple of things though:
I'd take the white from his beard and use it to push the spec on the swords, it doesn't add to your pallete and will make the swords pop more.
Also on the attack moves, it would be nice to have a slightly brighter colour on the motion blur of the sword, again, you could use the beard pallete for this.
Awesome animation on them btw.

Also. This animation. Looks kinda odd when the shield is brought forward but it has a flat edge at the front. I think you've tried to make it look as if its moving back around the body to the other side. This would be a side on view and the centre part of the shield would be raised. Atm the shield looks like it cuts in half for a frame. Hope thats clear. If not i'll do a paintover.
