Jarrede: Thank you :) I am intrigued now, any more info's on what you have planned?
Massbot: thanks for the crit mister. The long torso/stumpy legs choice was intentional, but perhaps I didn't push that far enough hence it looks a bit odd? I will push him about a bit and see if I can make the choices more defined, and less half arsed. Love the kerrigan btw. :)
gawd: ta much
Oniram: love the gun but have to agree on the thumb ridge, I would kill it as surface detail altogether and maybe suggest the pattern in the diffuse?

tjdupree3dart - not bad, but get some more grunge/dirt/wear on those textures! use the specular to bring out the scratches.
Another note on specular maps: the metallic surfaces should have highlights of similar hue to their diffuse - NOT necessarily white. at the moment your oil drum and toilet look like they have a layer of lacquer on them. MattQ86 already posted this on the previous page but here it is again: http://www.manufato.com/?p=902

Looks nice. Realy liking that you are using a reflection-mask. But i would put more dirt into it, esp. at the bottom to raise the contrast and bring out the reflectivity. I also slighty would add the blueish painted parts in the refl. mask, cos its another material with different light behavior.
Also get rid of your weird topology at the bottom, makes no difference to your polycount but the shading in an game-engine maybe will be better and there wont be any tris.
http://img593.imageshack.us/img593/500/vasewireframe.jpg
Whats your texture seize? reflec. mask could be smaller as the other maps.
Is this just an exercise or are you going to create a scene?

Decided to give sculptris a go at lunchtime. See what its all about. Was fun, but my computer at work is shite. It crashed at one point but I was glad to see that Sculptris auto saves and the skull automatically reopened at the point just before it crashed, so lost no work.
Would love to have a Move brush. Is there one?
Anyway. Heres a Skull-ptris :D
Note: 20mins without skull reference, hence it's not very accurate model wise.

Hey Stinger88! The move brush in Sculptris is called the Grab brush. Global-> moves(grabs :D) the whole object, Limit-> restricts how far you can move ("grab") in space geometry from the object. Without limit u can extend geometry as much as u can. :D

In order to practice 3D modeling (in Maya) I choose to model one of the District 9 movie gun.

That "weird" geometry is actually more optimized. Uniform sized triangles and maximizing the size of the triangles is faster. Check this interesting read: http://www.humus.name/index.php?page=News&ID=228

Stuff will never be that shiny underwater, especially when it was clearly some time down there. Its just shiny and wet when it is above the sea. There will be seaweeds, sand and stuff on it making it dull.

Oniram, you got some pretty messed up geometry on that pistol there, seems you also have a hard time deciding if it should be a hi-poly or lo-poly model. My tip to you is to check out some of the hi-poly to lo-poly modeling method tutorials out there and learn more about normal-mapping e.g. But keep at it dude!

If you look at the handle for example, most of the geometry follows the flow of the HP and then it's connected up with triangles.. That's just..

Sure, ofc i have that. But it wasn't what i was talking about. It was just that it felt that i wrote with a tone of, you know what you should go back to the drawing board with this.. Maybe unnecessary to even say anything, i don't know..
Anyhow, my latest adventure.. First bake.. Abviously the other side isn't duplicated around yet.. And yes, there is shading errors and missed rays.. I know :)

Then today I decided to make a brick since I found out that Sculptris had come out on Mac, so I messed about in that and came out with this:

Then after creating various maps I finished it up and just did a quick render in Blender.

Are the teeth painted on there or alpha planes, gilesruscoe? If the latter, you may want to make them bigger, he has no teeth from the sides. :)
Also, the jaw looks kinda weird, it extends a bit too far imho. But if that's in your design, nevermind what I said. :)

Aye, you're both right.
The weird geometry will give better performance. Well, you'd need a huge amount of vases for it to make any difference, but still.
And the clean geometry will give better, more uniform shading, like Mr. Cash says.

seth.: yeah, it's because I am such a beginner at creating rigs, so it's all tied up to some IK I probably didn't do right, tl;dr if I pull his legs forward he bends his feet up. Also lots of mesh collapsing I tried to hide with the angles.
I'd say you should start a thread, but I suppose this one is more social :B man he is getting nasty <3

Still working on this guy, currently making the meshes and placing them before I bring them into sculptris and finish them off for the highpoly.
Still got to make a blockout for his hair and working on a holster of some sort where he can attach a warhammer onto his back when its not in use.

Greetings people, this is my first post on this site so hello everyone!
I'm working on a ship based on the HMS Victory to improve my modelling and texturing skills as I hope to get into the 3D industry most likely specializing in Video games but If that's not possible it's not the only thing out there for 3D art. Anyway I am having plenty of trouble getting the ship right as it's quite difficult to get the hull looking right... so I plan on making a smaller ship to learn "how" to make the HMS Victory although I am going to add some of my own ideas into the ship as I don't really like the colour of the real HMS Victory and other small things. Anyway instead of starting on the ship first, I modelled a musket and a ship cannon.

Nate - I love the style of those towers, nice work
seth - it's looking badass
kosh - it looks good but the juxtaposition of realistic torso anatomy with anime-style face and stylised proportions gives it a strange look...
Sauron - that is truly beautiful
Progress on this Beetle is slow but steady, I've got some messed up topology at the back there... not really sure how I can fix it

sltrOlsson, nice, I think a Beetle is something everyone has to model at least once in their life :)
This model is for a film I'm contributing to (www.stinaandthewolf.com), the idea is to model a wrecked/abandoned Beetle, so I will destroy and deform this model once it's done! the fun part!
This is the look I'll be aiming for:

The collarbones are the first thing that jumps out at me. They shouldn't be curving up like that, they go over to the shoulder, so they're generally very straight.

The TV's bother me a little in that they are repeated on every single column, I would say every other column unless you plan on changing the screen to something else on each column. Thanks. Yeah I used Alphas. You have to put it into the Alpha Channel of the Diffuse Map and then adjust the Alpha Threshold Slider until it fits. Don't know if the new version of Marmoset can use more than 1bit Alpha, the old (free) version can't.

Collarbones are neither straight nor shaped the way you had them modeled. One of the best analogies I've heard regarding them (from Vilppu) is that they're kind of like old school bicycle handle bars:
http://favim.com/orig/201106/14/collar-bones-girl-hothothot-jaw-neck-skinny-Favim.com-75420.jpg
It's a curved bone that extends on top of the shoulders. When in doubt, check a skeleton. :)

Yeah he's got a heavy slouch/hunchback. If you pose/slouch the same way and look in the mirror your collar bone appears to be curved. There is some slight curvature in it but it's the skin and muscles that round it out that much.

dood you just made my day :)
I love Dune!
ya Frank Herbert was the best sci fi writer of all time in my opinion.
ya your scene reminded me of it because some of the indoor spaces are described of being built of very expensive older material like marble and stone, with huge amounts of detailing on them with some modern elements to them.

thanks for all of the comments on my bizarro superman.
@scooby: i used 3dsmax's default hair and fur modifier. it was pretty tedious trying to get anything to look good. i started by using splines to style the hair and then tweaked it with the styling brushes.

Hey man,
Right now the lighting is killing this, way too contrasty and there is no ambient really bouncing around to brighten up those shadows. I would add a cooler blueish skylight/ambient light to help show the forms a bit better. here is a quick photoshop adjustment to kinda explain what I mean. the image started to go a bit garbled after adjusting unfortunately because it was so dark to begin with. hope this helps man.

Everyone has to start somewhere, I'm sure he could crits more than sarcasm. This is his first post on PC. But it does look like he just modeled something and put a mesh smooth on it.
@tjdupree3dart And as for the mud, mud doesn't layer on like that. Mud cakes onto areas that touch the ground and areas close to where dirt would fly, meaning the hooves and legs of the zebra and tires of the car. Dirt also has grit in it. To be quite blunt the dirt passes on those models looks a bit more like defecate.

@tjdupree3dart
i dont wanna be harsh, but i wont be all "hey look its so cool". as said before, everyone has to start somewhere, and youre going well. i still remember when i first started (nevermind people who bash blender, its an awesome 3D tool, indeed i still use it for simpler meshes. but its always a good idea to get the hang of 3dsmax, as its the industry's standard).
well, on to your work (im saying all this bearing in mind youre starting with this, dont know if you already know the things im gonna say; anyway.)
work with references. anything you model. dont try to get it off your head, it doesnt work 99.9% of times. even if its a google search for some images, its critical to have references to base your work on.
if youre working with blender, try to avoid the subsurf tool (its the same as the subd tool on zbrush). unless youre going for a hi-poly, having your low poly subd'd wont help much. try working your polies out from scratch.
practice. ive seen its your first time here, so, dont give up. keep posting here, people here always help. really.
last but not least, dont be afraid to ask. whatever doubt you might have, just ask.
hope this helps you for now, keep up the good work :D

On your gun the surface is very noisy and kinda looks like it's made of clay. The paint job is also very loud and kinda random with how it's blotched on. It's just kinda busy. So I suggest maybe working on hard surface modeling techniques for this and have visual breaks w/ simplified areas on the weapon in both geometry and texturing.

Cool stuff going on here, thought I could share what I'm doing. My idea was to create a small, childish Riddick.
I used a childs proportions and the concept piece turned out like this:

But when I sculpted him, I changed my mind and made his shoulders wider,
arms bigger and legs smaller. So far, it looks like this:

I find it pretty fiddly to get a reasonable render setup using max viewport shaders...

dude. awesome. ha. since that's going so well maybe you might like to model up his whole collection ?
Thanks! Not sure if I'll do more of his designs. Maybe, but not sure. I know Adam did a great job on one of them a while back.

@Alberto Rdrgz-- by all means, please do!
I'm hoping to have it all finished and colored by the end of the week, at which point I'll post it here. You can also just find it in my sketchbook and illustration threads.
Let me know if you ever do start on it and I can clear up any questions about the concept.
dood! yes!~ let me finish a couple more small scene for the port and this is on! thanks!

Been working on this mostly during lunches. Still lots of work to do obviously but hoping to get a decent bust out of it. I'm basing this on various predator references however this is the main one.

fun stuff rooster! Getting a strong pac-man vibe. Especially how he exits and enters a new room.

no preset, i followed chris albeluhn's great tut on outdoor lighting, it really helps (with some tweaks to adjust it to the scene, as i didnt want it to be fully illuminated)

plus exponential height fog to simulate atmospheric perspective.

I've used that tut in the past, very helpful! I asked because I knew you were working on lighting a little while ago, and that was one of the new features in June UDK.

yea indeed, as soon as i installed it i went checking the templates, god theyre awesome! theyve got now 4 templates, each one for a time of the day (morning, daytime, afternoon and night). you place the skysphere on your map, and add the instanced mat on it, bam there you have it. besides, you can tweak the material to your like, adding color/desaturating, etc (usual udk stuff). plain wonderful.
still to try the new foliage system. wondering if its very ram consumptive, my laptop has 2 gig of ram, so i cant be doing much if it eats loads of ram hahah

Working away on this portfolio piece, hand painted MMO style Ogre, mainly just a rough block out for the texture apart from the face and 'hat', which i've started to detail.
