Mainly I wanted to build him so that he was pretty much hollow. If I didn't I'm sure it'd be many less subtools. The reason is that inside I'm going to have polys with an emissive map on there so that it looks like he's glowing from the inside out (slight bloom effect in marmoset maybe). Also, I wanted to build the low poly so that he theoretically could move without weird deformation if he was all one or a few meshes. I also wanted to pick and choose where I wanted symmetry and where I wanted asymmetry.

Also my computer is kinda junky and it's easier to go into Solo mode and sculpt each piece up to 300-500k polys rather than sculpt 3-4 meshes that are 4-5 mil polys each.

I am starting a new scene and having massive trouble with the perspective! Well trying to replicate it in UDK. I have messed with the FOV and the res but I just cant get it right!

I might just build it with a more practical viewpoint!

The scene i am making is from concept art by Brian Sum http://briansum.com/

Actually, I think you should make the corridor taller.
Look at how the most frontal arches extend beyond the screen in the concept, but they're clearly visible in your WIP. That ought to tell you that they're too low.

Brian Sum's work is pure sex btw!

@gwad - Thanks man! :)

@benji - Thanks, bud :) I'll do that. The DOF gives nice focus to the action in the scene. Reads well. The [viewer's] left side of the street looks a bit naked. A copy of that trash can would look good over there. Maybe tipped over.

the DOF is okay, although everyone wants the sweet bokah DOF now. What is weird to me is that the sky is purple but the ambient lighting looks yellow? Maybe it is purple on closer inspection, but seems like it could use some more purple lights.

Polygoblin and Ninjas, thanks for the crits :)

I'm glad you think it reads well polygoblin - with the complexity of the scene, I felt the DoF would prevent the background from stealing the focus. and I see what you mean about the bareness of the left side - I want to model more junk to dress the scene with if I can find the motivation :)

Ninjas, yes I was wary of the bokeh falling into the territory of clichés :\ I see what you mean about the lighting, maybe this needs some tweaking. The ambient light is actually blue tinged; the yellow is coming from the streetlight omnis that are perhaps slightly overpowering.

thanks for the crits dudes.

Saferdan, what an awesome concept- good luck with this man, I looks forward to seeing progress! looks like you've made a solid start.

Mr. cash, that is beautiful! I love the design. some parts (the grip?) could use more evidence of wear and tear to maintain consistency with the scratches elsewhere. stunning work overall!

Pangahas, be aware of over saturation (and under saturation!) of parts of your painting. I think you should tweak some proportions, and the shadows need a greater range of value to really give it some depth!

Here's a WIP of a project i'm currently working on in my freetime. I"m going to try to take him all the way through a production pipeline until i have a final render. I'm a game artist of about two years, and i'm working on my portfolio to try to make the jump over to film eventually.

I am DEFINITELY going to need some help when it comes to working on his SSS skin shader and what not. But for now here's the sculpt. Still very WIP. Just focused on the head for about 2 hours so far.

The idea is that he's an alien baby. I wanted him to be pretty creepy looking....close enough to human that its creepy. I have a buddy at zoic who linked me to a scene on the show V where the hybrid was in a test tube and i loved it. So this is my response to that.

heavily influenced by jordu schell of course.

Neox - the scene your doing is from the wormwood sega right? Forgive me if i'm wrong! Your sculpt looks awesome :)

I am slowly getting there with my perspective I think. I have been laying mine over the concept in photoshop and I am pretty close. I just need to move a couple of things and then i can start making high polys!

I think the fact that her hair, which is kind of a blur too, makes the DOF blend in with it. Maybe try lighting around her head to make it pop a bit more. Your lighting overall is a pretty good start, but I'd try pushing it more and do some rim lighting or highlights on some of the darker areas.

spend a little more time dialing in the lighting and composition. here's a quick tweak in photoshop. if you are using udk, any color adjustments you can do in PS can be accomplished in UDK with an color look-up table.

http://i.imgur.com/XoaK7.jpg

I think the composition is weak and I want to see the figure better highlighted with the blue light from the mysterious alley, so we look at her as much as we look at the blue light which is largely overpowering the scene now; work on her pose a little, more dynamic, you've got a good start on a "mid stride hey what's that" kind of thing but it could be better. I'd like to see the composition reworked a little to have the figure more prominent/better set for rule of thirds. I zoomed the whole scene a little because there's a lot of dead space that is drowning the figure in the frame. Overall you've got a lot of good work here but get the color temperatures more carefully tuned to real night light settings and you'll have a much stronger piece overall

Hey Marquis, I love the sword - if i may - a texture suggestion

http://desmond.yfrog.com/Himg696/scaled.php?tn=0&server=696&filename=texturesuggestion.png&xsize=640&ysize=640

Mirror the blade and handle bits since they are identical as far as I can tell, increase the size of the hand guard where the lettering goes, move the other pieces of the hand guard down, and finally - decrease texture size to 1024x512, since you will be sizing up the lettering based off of importance it should keep the same level of detail with increased performance.

Dduckworth: Thanks for the feedback. Do you think that there would be too much texile density difference by doing it that way? I've no doubt about the space being saved, just the difference in texture quality

almighty_gir: I did it like that because I felt it added to the texture, you're right it's not necessary with a normal map but it still adds to the believability imo.

Of course it does. Not every engine / game is capble of doing superb shadermagic. While prbaked lighting might look odd in like 10% of all possible situations it might work great for the other 90%. There is no phyiscal correct lighting in games most is stiil faked so why not use simple tricks to enhance the look?

I'm thinking the way you have it now is probably too high in texel density and this would help even it out, swords being relatively small objects in a world a 2048x1024 map is pretty dense, I would say probably even for a first person view, but of course I am not an expert on this haha. The best way to check that I know of would be to load it up in UDK and see it's color in the texel density mode, if it's bright green then it's too dense, lowering the texture size would probably make it be the better color - blue. Overall though with the changes I suggested I'm guessing you wouldn't lose hardly any density really. I feel i'm making less sense as I ramble on :poly142:

this is very cool and i love it when people make blades that look like a real one every once and a while, not that i dont like over the top stuff, but its nice to have the variety, one question tho, for what kind of game would you be using 600 tris for a sword that you were using a 2048x1024 for? seems like one of those numbers could be tweaked to make it either a first person asset, or more of an open world asset. I would suggest halving the texture size like DDuck said, really good crit on the whole there, take his advice :D:thumbup:.

Eight, thats awesome, tho the human face kinda throws me off, maybe you could do something like the human face camo appendages of mimic? cant find a good image with a quick search but basically the bugs had deformed feeding legs that they would fold in front of their faces to make them look like creepy people from a distance to lure people into alleyways and such. Also working on a bug dude, so this gets me pumped :D

Mr. cash, that is beautiful! I love the design. some parts (the grip?) could use more evidence of wear and tear to maintain consistency with the scratches elsewhere. stunning work overall!

Thanks for the compliments Benji, and u´re absolutely right. There were some minutes left today so I found time for working on the leather.

Here's something old I've been working on in-between school assignments that I've decided to finish now on my spare time. The first pic is currently where I'm at and below are some thumbnail designs of her that I'm considering.

Comments and critique is highly welcome !

jmiles: That's looking very nice ! I kinda agree with Dan about the texture contrast but it's looking pretty sweet nevertheless :)

DDuckworth: The scene is looking fairly empty right now so I'd definitely throw in some trees to populate the scene a bit !

It's hard to watch because it starts out so quickly and ends before I can full screen it, seems like with wings like that he would just jump, have a slightly longer hangtime than usual, then land again. But from what I can see it looks pretty good :)

Any suggestions besides the obvious (make wood pieces continue over the seam.)

Some things you may want to try:
- clearly define the borders of the wood. Yours looks very splintered at the edges.
- Don't stress the detail pass so much. There's too much going on.
- Use deep and dark colors for the spaces inbetween the planks themselves.
- When you're happy with it, make some variations of the same tile and assign them randomly to the mesh. :)
- Decals! :D

Make the boards longer and run parallel. The boards that run vertical are very distracting and really breakup the tile effect. Work a bit on the highlights and shadows and you'll be golden!

DDuckworth: The scene is looking fairly empty right now so I'd definitely throw in some trees to populate the scene a bit !

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4418716/girl2.png

2 pages later my post was verified :D I hope nobody minds if I quote the original post to bring it to attention because I could use some feedback !

Gingerookie: Wow, you pretty much nailed the concept, it's looking great ^^ Once the shield is decorated he's going to be even more awesome :D

Blvdnights: Nice scene ! What does it look like with a darker background fog and a more subtle blue light ? I think toning them down would give the scene more atmosphere :) And perhaps raising the radius and brightness on the lamp lights instead

Gingerookie: nice face on the old dude :)

here a little update on the killercroc thing.
I know the details are very random and not natural, worked to fast and without alphas..
anyway, hope its looks "ok". :)
And now back to work!

Blvdnights: Sweet scene, I think I remember seeing your tractor before and it looks great. It just seems really dark, could be my monitor at work but it would be nice to see more bounced light from the lamps.
Gingerookie: Cheeks, love his style and you nailed it!
blitz: omg, you're crazy! Looks pretty sweet to me :)

A little something I put together recently. Cross posting from my digital sketchbook thread, so C&C there if you'd like.

First lighting pass for my new scene with my tractor. Still gonna add some firefly/bug particles around the lights and still not totally happy with the lights or some of the placement of the grass.

Sephez - awesome stuff, I love the stylisation and the texture work is great. Nice variants too - I like the design you have right now, but you could incorporate the bracelets and other accessories from the concepts to make it more visually interesting.

eY3lEs5 - looking great. I think the bricks are disproportionally large though. you have just over 20 rows of bricks in that wall. I went and counted the bricks in the wall of my house (...I have spare time.. haha) and there were at least 35 rows floor to ceiling.

wake - epic. is it me or is his right leg longer than his left? considering the extension of the foot.

crazyfool - looking awesome! I love the smirk on his face. this guy really has character. the colouring is simple but seems to make a really bold statement.

Mr.Wednesday - nice but I think the shape is off, it looks too flat and regular. Also defining where the eyebrow is might help!

@ Sephez

maybe you could try to make real particle hair - are you going to animate her?

it seems to me that her arms are to long or her upper part of the body is to short.

Can you post some wires expecially for the clothing and some different views? (how does the bag look like?)

ah by the way make sure to not post pictures of her without clothes (even if these pictures are wire pictures) some special Users in Polycount could understand it wrong
and will say malicious things.

the colors are good and making it uniqe because it matches perfectly with the color of her skin.

only the overpaintings of the different clothes are not so good because these colors are not corresponding enough with her skin.

maybe this is helpful to search for;

THE SEASONAL COLOR ANALYSIS

I found this link where there is a color palette of the differnt types.

http://www.style-makeover-hq.com/seasonal-color-analysis.html

the glasses or the bow is good if you want that the viewer pays more attention to her face and her mimics.
everything else that is movable could distract the viewer from the message you want to give away.

I took a break from my texturing-learning and figuring out how to get things into Source a few days ago to begin working on this. It's a Warhammer 40K Kroot rifle. I've changed the design a bit where I wanted to add more details, and where I thought certain things on the plastic figurine didn't make much sense (For example, the charge-loading hatch thing. On the figurine it's a lot thicker height-wise. I liked the look of it being thinner, and thought it lined up better with the barrel that way when I imagined the charges being loaded in). I still have quite a bit to do. I'm also going to attempt sculpting for the first time ever on this, so I'm pretty excited for that. I already did a quick test on the pad there, and made it look more like leather. I need to learn the sculpting program more before I really jump into it though.

Cool! I'm getting quite the Kratos vibe of your Dark Prince, must be the pale skin, reds and the angry bald face. :p
Good work on the Clemente Sauve character! Although the bend on the distal phalange of his index finger is very unnatural. Looks like he broke his finger.
Try bending your finger like that, you're physically incapable of doing that. :)

edit: Yes, I'm nitpicking, deal with it! :D

Gingerookie: That Captain America looks great! I think you've captured the proportions and silhouette of the concept really well. I don't know if you're still working on it, but I think you could definitely use some sharper edges in the right areas to get a variety of edge quality. Everything has kind of a uniform softness at the moment and I think a sharply defined planes here and there will really finish this off nicely.

DDuckworth - looking pretty good. Couple things to consider; try thinning the grass out a bit more towards the back of the scene. Perhaps make some small rocks, flowers, plants to populate the scene a bit.. like along the path. And lastly, if your trying to stay true to your skybox, then the front of the stone would be in shadow.

Hah, nice! I actually looked at the drawings before seeing who posted them and thought to myself "hey, these look like Dado's work". Maybe it's a good sign, you're developing a recognizable style. :D

jmiles, your pan doesnt quite look done yet, its seriously lacking in colour variation and that one finger looks a bit wierd.

look at all the greens and brown tones varying from almost white to a kind of orange on this pic "http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_mg7D3kYysfw/RqhR5IMABSI/AAAAAAAACmY/HkwdhbxpdXQ/s400/PAN2_narrowweb__300x334,0.jpg"

Ahh.. thank you sir.. yeah.. I think I missed a vert or two while weighting that hand.. I'll take a look at it again.. good to know about that color variation.. and yeah he is a lot more green.. I'll take a look at it again.. thanks for the heads up..

af3d: She's looking kinda cool ! One thing that stands out to me though are the legs simplicity compared to the feet and the hand. I think she could do with some more details in that area, maybe some more elements that complements her upper body ?

future-fiction: Awesome ! Can't wait to see where you'll be taking her !

I've continued working on the girl and here's the progress;
Considering adding a few more accessories and an imaginary friend big enough for her to ride on, as that would be a fun thing to do ! :)

@felipefrango: thanks Frango! Good to hear that. Coming from you It´s super-nice. Waiting the opportunity to concept something for ya model in 3D. ;-D

@Allan-P: You´re doing well too with your new 3D stuff man. Keep´n coming.

@Sephez: lovely char. What do you have in mind for her puppy?

We'll see what ( if ) I'll come up with but it will probably be more along the lines of the cartoon show "Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends" than a puppy :) I want to make a colorful creature with some interesting shapes to contrast the "normal" look of the girl.

A good example is the "Short Tailed Qi" by Davesrightmind (http://davesrightmind.deviantart.com/art/Short-Tailed-Qi-180684666) :D It's still just an idea I haven't fully explored though so I might not actually incorporate it. I hope it makes sense !

Some lighting scenarios.. also, fixed some vert weights and added a bit more color variation, leaning towards greens..

first is natural sunlight (lights turned up a little bit), next is Forest ambiance with the lights turned up a bit, and the last is blue sky ambiance with the lights blown out.

jmiles: I like the first one. He has both cool and warm colours in his skin and it really separates the violin's colours from his own.
