East: Very nice!

I'm about ready to call this finished and move onto rigging. ~11K tris, 7 materials. Yes, the hands could be optimised, but there just aren't enough hours in the day. :) Hope you like!

the diffuse on the collar bone / chest area looks a bit too dull or desaturated but other wise this looks great.

+1 for a bit of colour on her collar bone, right now it looks waxy like a madame tussauds figure. But the rest is awesome.

Maybe in distant future I can do great characters too, but for now here
is a blocky satellite I am working on:

richithekiller: She's lovely! Very well done. Very realistic. The eyes in particular are reading quite well. I would love to see those shots at even higher res/closer or maybe a turn around just to see the spec play on the skin & eyes.

As for crits, I'll just echo that I feel the spec on the hair is letting the piece down a little. Some more shine or even anisitropic shading might go a long way to fixing that.
Also it looks like you've got some color profile-mismatch action going on or something as the skin terminator is shifting a little green, but that's just a photoshop/jpeg/pimping problem not anything to do really with your art. *edit: I just looked at it in Chrome, instead of FireFox and it looks much better.

Been working on making a melee weapon for a source mod my friend is doing. I am having trouble with bones and the weapon being in the player's hand. Iff anyone here knows how to properly rig weapon models for source send me a PM, i've had rotten luck finding tutorials covering bones and source engine modeling.

Moof: Looks like something outta Doom3 (in a good way)!

To me tho the way you've presented it is killing it a little. The stroke + gradient background aren't supporting your art, they're taking away. Try just showing it to us with a darker/ diffuse on a grey background. I like to use the Polycount grey(40,40,40), so my stuff "floats" on the forum.

This is why I come to polycount... To say thats 11k tris is insane, really, really insane. It goes to show you really don't need to throw more and more polygons at a model when all you need to do is improve your workflow of the low poly and render to texture.

Amazing.

Trying to finish this model i left a couple a months ago.
Black areas are basically done. Got some work left on the rest.

I know there might be some errors if you compare the model against the real deal. I mixed up my references in an early stage, but i'm not gonna make it more realistic or true to the original. Sorry.

Spitty - After I finally managed to close my jaw, I do have one minor crit. I think you might be able to push the texture on the pants a little further. I feel like it needs a little more...texture to it. At the moment it looks a little too solid blue.

Well I got about all the effects I want in the scene now all setup in kismet.

All I need to do is build a modular set of buildings and then take unreals modularity tools for a test drive and layout that bigo city in the background.

Then I can actually do a lighting + lightmass pass on this bad boy since right now its all just standard lights just tossed around with no real settings.

And then I need to setup depth of field / bloom on a timer for when the moon explodes to focus on a key point. need to look more in to that one how to isolate meshes to "not" get DOF settings on it...

Well here's a quick screen ;p

I guess this is a little bit out of the context of this forum, but I made a small music video slash short film for the band Sons of Perdition. It's mainly just hand drawing, Photoshop and some compositing in Fusion with a bit of 3D here and there. My time was limited so not everything is where I wanted it to be, but I'm happy enough with it as it is.

Hope you enjoy, feel free to criticize the Hell out of it. I'm curios if you even get what's going on.

Rayph : Your color range for the BG and the characters are to close together They are already pretty desaturated, so either punch up the colors on the figures or desaturate the BG a bit more. its a very energergitic piece, maybe the fast moving blur pieces need
more focues and burn particle?

MM, NBLM: I didn't even notice there was anything wrong with the collar bone area, but now that you mention it, I can really see it!
Delerium, ScoobyDoofus: Yeah I hate hair. I'm using an anisotropic shader, but I'm going to go back to it and see what I can do.
DKK: yes! Its just a little strip of transparent polys with a high gloss (red surface). I also copied an idea I saw on Kodde's website (Felix Waubert de Puiseau's work) to put a surface under the upper eyelid to darken down that area of the eyeball (yellow surface).

EQ> Think I just need to do a cleaner final bake. Move some stuff around, bake at a higher res, better UV.s etc.
Might be some smoothing issues.

If I'm correct, an averaged cage is just a cage the hugs the model completely, with a similar smoothing group. UV's unconnected an obtuse angels?

Feel like I'm catching up on my cage making skills tbh. Last job never did anything like 'proper' cage baking :P .

have you considered using a cloth physics simulation? Here is an example of similar cloth I did with a straight physics simulation. I know other people also like to start with physics and the sculpt details on top.

Swizzle
01-10-2011, 07:02 PM
S_ource, you should only be getting V-shaped folds like that if the cloth is supported just at the corners. Since it has supports the entire length of the top, it should have more wavy, vertical folds that get looser towards the bottom.

and yes. the trigger pull on the forward trigger (which is for the enfield revolver component) would be shit and sorry about your sight picture, bro. but the challenge for me was to mate two guns while still giving proper clearance for internals and operations (see Nixon's "Slammer" in Darrow and Miller's Hard Boiled)--it was too much fun to do something this dumb.

http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/2660/capture2ba.jpg

http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/402/capture3az.jpg

couple things:
1) is there a way to check for n-sided polys or n-gons in max, i know in maya there is a way you can highlight them through the menus + options, is there a way in max ?

2) i was looking through the very nice polycount wiki and took a gander at the mount & blade modular piece article, and i ask the question, how did she (i think?) get the textures exactly right? and what i mean by that is she used tillable textures but they had those seam darker bits down the almost right side, but yet they are perfectly positioned on the poly, so shouldnt there be that little bit left over :S
anyone care to explain or yell at me for not explaining properly ;)

3) anyone have any ideas on how to textures this beast, all on one map or tile texture, mixed? any help would be great

so i still have a little ways to go with this beast, still more windows and another chunk of building at the back to add, also opinions on the very top piece with the 3 windows, anyone think it still looks boring, i think i might add another window at the back of the model for the top, add the bell soon aswell

finally, thoughts, complains?

I've been working on this character for a few days. Skinned it so I could pull some clothes off the geometry and make future skinning the clothes easier on myself, and just couldn't sleep without getting some animation on there.

Note, his gait is lopsided because I intend for his right side to be more heavily armored than the left, and his right hand will be holding a weapon.

Scudz: love the volumes on that guy!
Rayph: great dynamic picture, do try to keep the focuss on the characters with your lighting because it isn't easy to read
Mladen: nice render, is that mentalray?
crazyfool: haha great personality
tda: i like the drawing so far , are you going to render it or keep it lineart? if lineart then maybe you could play with the lineweight a bit
Jayoplus: great design and clean modeling, the materials do give me a toyfeel atm but it clearly shows the shapes ^^
Striker: great face sketch

here's what I've been doing at work.
A traditional portuguese table football table.
I'm using 3 point shader, 1 2048 dif/norm/spec for the table and 2 512x256dif/norm/spec for the dummies.
the model is arround 22k tris (we want it to be quite detailed)

cheers!

I like using UVLayout from Headus (you can get their demo version for 30 days). For a brief tutorial on how to use it, I'd head here: http://cg.tutsplus.com/tutorials/autodesk-3ds-max/create-a-realistic-looking-mailbox-using-3ds-max-and-uv-layout-day-2/ . He does some layout in max, then swaps over to UVLayout.

aNarchy: I can see some areas that can be optimized in regards to tri count. Don't be afraid to break the building into seperate pieces and work modularly, like you did with the flying butresses. That alone could save you on tri's.
In regards to Unwrapping, I've never used UVLayout but it looks like a valuable tool. One of my school buds made a good tutorial utilizing quick planar/stitch/relax methods in Max. You get some accurate results, and it's not that hard once you get it (just a little time consuming, but that's unwrapping for you). Here are the tut links:

My first impression is that there is a bit of a moire pattern, also, I feel the biggest issue at the moment is the mirroring in the middle it produces a very straight linear feeling, that I don't feel works in a cobblestone texture, here a few quick examples of cobblestone roads in a similar type of pattern to what you made.

Also, some dirt/moss/stuff, in the cracks will definitely be a good idea.

Here's where I'm at with building a tower, it's the hero prop for a medieval/fantasy square, very loosely inspired the Clock Town South from Majora's mask. It's pretty much ready for the primary texturing phase, although I still need to model and bake the door. I won't be texturing it farther than the bakes until after I finish modeling and UV'n the rest of the square. It's all blocked out though.

The tower all together is 14,174 Triangles.

marq4porsche (http://www.polycount.com/forum/member.php?u=21223), looking nice.

if I could suggest some things.
your stones are placed very flat, and they're all the same height.
maybe break that up a bit with uneven normals?

also, they're all the same colour, while both your reference pictures have multicoloured stones. be careful not to make the difference in colour too stroing, or it'll stand out a lot on the repeat.

and the space between the tiles is too light, I'm not sure if it's the colour, or just the spec tho.
