splendid concept max!
almighty_gir: obiwan matches great.
currently i'm pushig this scene forward
dont know how far i'll go. only bump maps used so far. currently only a mental ray rendering with a silly glare camera filter on it :D
heavy use of lowpoly support edges and dirtmaps

Firebert, you should make a small tutorial on how to get those renders. I'm clueless when it comes to MR.
Also, do you bring in a decimated version? Or just the highest subdiv? What about the background?

Simple grass texture for my game. Guess it looks quite right.
(actually a 256*256 texture repeated 3 times)

There's a couple obvious tiling spots.

Yes, that small points with less grass blades, more than everything. Going to fix it, but I'm actually looking if the overall effect is quite good.

Yeah, personally I think it looks great. Kind of rendered-looking; how did you create it?

Plain Photoshop, that was really easy to put up. It's just a big overlay of 32 identical layers, but every one of it has been rotated, mirrored and moved differently from the others.

JordanW: thanks dude! :poly136:
BigJohn: I know I STILL don't know everything about MR and I probably never will.
Would take a long time to do a proper tut, but here's a breakdown of the setup.
Like you mentioned, a decimated mesh out of ZB. The background is duplicated meshes from nCloth simulations (meaning one simulation is run, the state of the simulation is stored, the mesh is duplicated and hidden, then the next simulation is run for the next drapery). Only two drapery meshes are raw duplicates. The others are all individual sims.
I also had "light cards" where the are lights were, but they got in the way of showing the light setup, so they are not in the image.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1446578/creature_tut1.jpg
and here's some of the photoshop process. at the end of this table (not included) is the addition of the ZDepth Pass and more level and color adjustments. there's a lot of settings in photoshop's lens blur filter that really aid in the look. all just experimentation on what you are trying to achieve.
really wish I would have played around with the light color more.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1446578/creature_tut2.jpg
really want to mess more with the particle pass. wasn't very happy with how it worked out and want to study up more on it. i think if used correctly in conjunction with a volume though, it would work very well. still need to perfect it.

@ Aphexx-- not at the moment, however a few people have suggested that I take it to full character, or grunge it up further with barnacles and sea life.. It was a project for school, so depending on what the teach wants me to do, I'll ask if I can push it further or if I have to move on to something new..
Hello guys, I'm new here, I stumbled upon this site quite a few times before and finally decided to sign up)
I've been modeling for around four years but haven't made any significant progress (mostly due to the fact that I'm lazy and I lose interest quite fast), but not long ago I picked it up seriously and I've been working on a few things, one of them is my first (more or less) decent character model, which I would like to show you guys))

Scudz / Maphitron: Cheers guys, there's only a little post going on. I originally wanted to do a nice render or something but got lazy. Basically, a few mats (chav11 and sludge...I think) combined, colour corrected and a few gradients splashed here and there.

Cross-posting this from my sketchbook thread: (http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1334656)
here's a quick render of a half-finished, half-assed character I've been "working" on for 6 freaking months...
It's for a university unit: the brief was to design, model, sculpt, map, rig, animate, light and render a character and thematically consistent environment. My environment is a run-down urban dystopia taking heavy influence from Kowloon city in Hong Kong. The character is a female militia member exploring her new surroundings.
The character is almost done - a bit of high-poly work, optimisation, texturing, rigging and applying mocap data to be done still.
But the character is not my priority right now - I have 3 weeks until the deadline and I have barely made a start on the environment yet - progress will happen soon :\

Depends on what you want to do with the scene I guess, but I personally had some really big problems with posable symmetry... It breaks way to easy imho! You can only use a handful of brushes without worrying too much, but the minute you start using any of the hardsurface brushes like trimdynamic and polish, posable symmetry gets all apeshit on you.
I'd advice against using posable sym; but that's just me. :)

i sculpted it first but then it was too boobly.
so i decided to use modo and model the creases :)
really nice modelling pedro :D very clean!, it would be nice to see how that lazer pointer would look if it had a fine bumpy plastic surface? just to give your piece another material to work with :)

Here is a character I have been working on lately, I did use a generic human base mesh to start sculpting him but I am just not sure who made it...

Pedro: Is awesome! Not sure I'd want a dangly chain so close to the revolving part of my gun, though :P
More work on this character for my Unity game. Starting to rush a bit as I'm nowhere near where I wanted to be by now progress-wise. Been working on the face texture and trying to get hair in and looking good using a stupidly complex shader so I don't have to alphatest it.
It's fun, though. Writing all my own shaders and programming the game mechanics and whatnot. She'll be the only character on-screen so I'm enjoying going a little further than would usually be acceptable.
Also, I hate hair.

you should definitely take a different fov, it stretches the character way too much right now, makes her look more goofy than she might actually be

No because my pipeline limits me (I go from Blender > IQM > PSK). I wish I could at least have a few more bones added to simply waggle hair and whatever's on these with the tools I use.
I'd use the PSK exporter if it weren't a nasty sonofabitch script that welds all vertices on export, destroying any edges I wanted to be sharp. I can't import PSA either so i'm unable to improve on even canned animations

Yeah, Unity's editor camera fov sucks, not a lot I can do about it :/
You could create a camera and set it to a specific FOV. You can then get the angle right for the shot in the editor then, with the camera selected, select ctrl+shift+f to align it to view.

@leilei - It seems to be the kinda thing that alot of products/people spell differently, according to wikipedia (ie THE FONT OF TRUTH..) haemorrhoids is the british spelling, so I went with that in the end, but yeah good spot, someone else beat you to it (lukily, I wouldnt have noticed..).

Awesome daphz! Your cloth folds could use more work, mainly in the forearms... granted, cloth folds are one of the hardest things ever to sculpt. The way to get the best results that I've found is to use one single piece of ref for a section and basically copy it. Can't wait to see the color scheme for this dude!

Daphz is on fire! Mad skills, i know nothing about characters but this looks lovely. Th hard surfacey stuff looks spot on too.
Im juggling so many things atm with trying to help 3 films get finished within the next 3 weeks, most of what im doing is boring stuff thats not really polycount worthy atm, (filthy rendering.) But I did manage to bake out the sewing machine that ive been putting together for a film about the ghost of a dress maker. Its got 2 lods, a 2000 poly version, (looks the same more or less with a less smooth silhoette) and this is the 4000 poly version for the shots that are closer to the camera. I have only baked out the normal maps and AO at the moment, so ill be trying to get the texturing finished on this badboy by the end of the weekend.

@Kurry: Wow, really sweet concept! I dig the Mayanesque vibe that that temple has. What's the story behind this thing? It's funny, I'm working on a Mayan temple interior myself atm, will post when I did more progress.
I think maybe the textures on the stonebuilt structures need a little bit more work since they seem to be lacking contrast and blend in with the rest of the scene. But that's just my taste..
The other thing you could try is to line up the bricks in the well (is it a well?) with the floor tiles to make it look like they belong together. The other thing you could do is to pan the tiles in the well just a little bit to create a ridge between them and the floor tiles. I did a lame paintover (http://img717.imageshack.us/i/ridge.jpg/) to show you what I mean^^

Kurry: I'm always a big fan of seeing more color in environments, but I wonder if yours is a little too much. I'm not sure if you're using too many colored lights or if your diffuse is really that way, but your scene is becoming difficult to read from a distance. I think lightening the grout between the bricks so they're not all so outlined, and varying the overall values of different sections of the environment so that the eye can more quickly grasp the shapes and forms might help.

I think the proportions could be tweaked. Here's a paintover. I might've made him too buff, than what you have in mind for this character. However, atm it looks to vertically "stretched".
I also would define the collarbone in some way.

Hey man!
I'd really recommend you start painting on your diffuse by hand now, and clean up those projection errors. the seams and all the inconsistencies rather than just projecting more and more photos onto it. Its starting to be very muddy. Also the sculpt and form is looking very blobby and a bit formless. Turn off your texture, firm up the sculpt, turn the tex back on, and paint it till it looks good. No more photos for now!
Thats just my 2 cents.

What's the number, atm? Also, how large will this guy be in the world?
It's 387 and it's like 0,7-1m.. I should take it down to 100 or something..
EDIT: 100 seems pretty low for something decently large that (I'm assuming) you'll see up close. Maybe just split the difference and bring it down around 2-250. Looking pretty solid so far, I like it!
