I am learning Maya 2011 and after 3 weeks I made this.
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/1111/firstrender.jpg
The book, Introducing Maya 2011, pretty much babied me through it. I just need to finish adding the bolts and screws to the panels and its done. I can't wait to post cool stuff like all you guys do :p

Looks dope Andre, can't wait to see that thing textured and animated.

Only one thing bothers me here; some of these bolts are way too small and would probably bake like crap.

polygunz: Loving it. The ribbon is an awesome touch :poly142:

@MikeB - Love the texture! Maybe make those plastic covers just a bit more transparent and either punch up the paint's spec or give it a slight reflection.
@POFFINGTON - great scene you have there. It's coming along nicely!

A statue prop I worked on for a level I'm doing. I still need to fix some issues up and do a cleaner/better render, but here it is:

Not much, but;
Can't say I am 100% satisfied with the textures, it's as if there are 3 styles going on in this item. The knobby parts of the hilt are supposed to look like some kitchen knives I have seen, they simply have 'pores' in the metal to add some grip.

the brief limit is 3000 tris.

it would be awesome if you can suggest me some ways to improve it.

Liking it so far, decals/stickers on that beetle are pretty nice. Couch texture definitely need some more love.
Some textures seems to be a little bit too low res, is that on purpose?

I just started to work on my first realistic weapon. It's an Mk. 23 model (USP Socom).
I started working on the suppressor because it was the easiest part and seeing it done will make me keep working when I get stuck somewhere and feel like doing something else :P

Here's a pic of the suppressor and part of the main body.

http://mik2121.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/usp_socom_wip01.png

The shader (Xoliul's shader) is making a couple parts look a bit weird so for the next screenshots I will play around with it so it looks better (the Fresnel Reflections looks a big ugly here).

have my first useable Kinect Mocap animations in the UDK:

Head and jaw have physics that i baked in Motion Builder and i have made some tweaks to the animations in 3Ds max.
I probably play the heavy walk animation when he starts walking and blend then over to the other animation.

@Yano
@Lachtan
Yano is right it is a Fiat 500, with a few modifications to make it match the car in the movie. Lachtan some of my textures might be a bit low res, the couch and chair are both sharing the same 1024 as well as the blankets. The car is on a 1024x2048 map and still looks lowres. I think it is because of the mipmaping in Unreal. But thank you for pointing it out I hope to make those fixes soon.

I have some concepts, character renders and environment stuff to post soon, I'm looking forward to some scathing and demoralising criticisms, it is much needed to motivate me.

A couple of questions, can anyone help?

when building environments with modularity in mind, is it generally better to build, then split into components, or to model components and then build?

also, when using Xref geometry in 3ds max, is there a way to add decals to this instanced geometry, WITHOUT having to create a new material for each instance? because that would be a bitch...

eY3lEs5
03-29-2011, 10:12 AM
Ferg - You are a wizard.

benji - Post! If you don't have one, I suggest a Digital Sketchbook thread here in PC so when you pimp out in this thread, people can write C&C in your sketchbook.

"when building environments with modularity in mind, is it generally better to build, then split into components, or to model components and then build?"

In regards to modular environments, you will probably be doing a little of both. Depends on how you plan your scene. Figure out which props can share parts, let alone be broken apart to use elements of the prop throughout the environment. It's all in the planning I think :)

You seem to have some crimping around the rear where the body meets the arches. You might need to refine the looping around that area to make it a bit neater. Also on the top of the car where the front support strut comes into it, looks like there is a slight dip too.

there is some badass work happening here!

Lachtan, may I ask for a brief overview of the techniques you are using for modelling cars in hi poly? do you separate each major component? do you use NURB surfaces?
Your Beetle is looking beautiful (although as others have mentioned, some minor pinching caused by topology issues). I'm also modelling a Beetle right now but I'm inexperienced at this kind of thing so I keep getting stuck...

Dado, that is sick, reminds me of a dream I had the other night about a rattle snake that doesn't bend, and only travels in straight lines. it can also fly, but only directly upwards.

Wildmax, very nice, how do you create that smoke in PS? brushes?
some edges on the face look a little too hard to me but maybe that's the style you're going for.

Daphz, totally badass. Is this some kind of futuristic plague doctor? only crit is that some of the folds in the fabric don't look like they are responding right

Mladen, that is glorious... so much personality. the materials are amazing, I love the textureing on the robe, and the marble looks great. Only one crit: I think the wrists and chin appear too soft - they would look better with a bit of prominent bone I think, to match the guy's gaunt face and bony fingers.

eY3lEs5, the textures look good although perhaps lacking in contrast. also the lighting could use some work I think, there are some shadows lacking!

Growgor, that is badass, strong silhouette!

Thrillkill, it looks good but the face is not very feminine, but perhaps you want to avoid uber femininity? depending on this, maybe the figure could use some slight adjustments too.
Also some of the folds look unrealistic; the upper arm fabric looks too silken and loose I think. And the folds at the bottom of the trousers look too tight and crisp.
one more thing, the boot on the left looks small and flattened and skinny from this angle

[most overused word in this post: "badass"]

Well. My GPU has exploded and I'm just about to order a new PC. So until it arrives i'm computerless. Well at least a computer I can work on anyway.

So I decided to actually draw something...with a real pencil!!! wow...Its been about 2 years. So where better to start than with my favourite study subject, Clint. I worked from an image in a Clint Eastwood book. I like the image because Clint looks quite sullen, which is different to his usual snake eyes/curled lip/bad ass look. But I cant find it online to compare. I'll keep searching.

Hey mang
This is actually my first car model, but it doesn't really show up, hehe.
Anyway, I'm using standard subdivision modeling, I'm using it for a long time and I'm used to it.
I'm keeping unmovable parts together, all doors are separated. You could also separate front/rear fenders I think it might help your topo.

Please, if you have any other questions, drop me a PM.

Here's day 5 final hi-poly model

Man, that´s a kickass version of that sword!
I kind of attepmted to do it not so long ago, but I still have it unfinished... and seeing yours, I´ll probably make another different one.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9250233/ork_sword.jpg

Here´s my version, but I like your´s way more than the version I did. Awesome job mate!

Thanks, man! I really like yours to be honest! The metal bits (the ones that are red in the concept) really give it an awesome, stylized look! I like it alot! I also like the way you did the grip/handle! I assume you made one cloth ring, duplicated it, and hid the repetition?

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, right? :) Your version has definitely given much to consider!

Thanks again! You should keep working on that one, and we can compare results! :)

@ Lachtan: looking sick bro. I can tell the area at the bottom of the A pillar still needs some work and I think you could tighten up the front middle part of the hood where the trim comes together.

other than that the surfaces are looking clean man :P Good luck going foreward!

Just got Ryan kingsliens new book "Sculpting realistic game characters"
Expect shots of my sad attempt at his process later tonight.
Edit:
heres my drunk attempt at matching the prelminary block out as outlined by kingsliens book.

Thanks for the kind comments! I´m modelling an entire ork character, this was supposed to be in his hand actually.
The grip is actually a single sculpted piece, made from a zsphere link, no separate pieces there.
I think I´ll make the character and then finish this one, your version certainly gave me a lot of ideas, and I think I´ll remake some sections based on your version.

Thanks, and keep rockin´ man!

the specs on this challenge was 1x4096 maximum for the scene (wich is nicely huge :D), it can be one 4096 for everything or multiple maps of 512, 1024, 2048 with diferent shaders...since we dont go over 4096 for all the scene. but well i just want to finish the high poly right now, as if it were a mock.

Yeah they are tattoos on the arms. They're meant to be a play on those lacy burlesque gloves...

Started last night, work in progress for sure. I've never done anything this detailed before.

Concept is from Guild Wars 2 (Link: http://www.guildwars2guru.com/wp-content/gallery/guild-wars-2-concept-art/weapons.jpg).

MephistonX - That is looking really nice! I have seen the concept many a time, its hard to forget and i think your peice looks awesome. The textures are really nice and do you have some sort of shader going on there?

Karera - that is beautiful! A couple of things though firstly the bit where you push the button, it doesnt seem to be attached to anything? and the texture for each of the colour displays seem a bit out of scale? Does that make sense? It is very pretty though!

thanks :) not sure what you mean, her eyes have a bit of an unnatural slant in some pics in the comic so I tried to stick to that, doesnt translate so well to 3d or maybe its cause the eyes arent spheres they are just sculpted in as this was just a few hours of fun :)

Did a little sculpt when I thought I might have time to enter the Brawl, but I realized school was getting in the way. So I threw it into Topogun to learn the ropes and decided to go a little further with it today. I'm probably not going to do the full character unless I suddenly find myself with a ton of time on my hands.

Well, I used the female reference photos, and conglomerated them together and drew over them to make a female model sheet. I intentionally kept it loose, and also asymmetrical, so there can be a lot of freedom still. Maybe it can be useful to someone else also? Just posting it here. :)

Looking really great so far Seth, the anatomy is very well defined. The only crit I have is that it feels like he is hunching his shoulders in the back view, I think it's because the curves on the sides of his back are a little too exagerated, but I might be wrong about this.

Nice!

One thing is bugging me though and its not a biggy. But the bicycle frame part of it doesn't work for me. The frame design seems wrong and the angle of the seat post looks odd. Obviously I realise theres no need for pedals but this is what I mean

voice over, and flyby test footage for the trailer I'm working on.

Steps left: Other stained glass windows related to the monologue about the game, baked shadows, music, idle animation for god king, flapping animation for hanging banner things.

Keen, that is beautiful! I know you are not finished yet, but I think I will mention anyway: make sure to get the style looking consistent! I love the clean cell shaded look, almost like a technical drawing, but the ragged dirty canopy doesn't fit in with this!
Also on that subject: the ragged edges of the canopy do not look realistic like that, try to think about where they would tear in real life - you probably wouldn't see consistent tearing along the whole edge like that

BigErn, awesome! And it is very interesting to me because I am working on a very similar urban Chinese environment based around Kowloon city. I would love it if you could post a screenshot of the modular elements you're using and wireframes, because I am a total noob at this kind of thing!
Oh and also, assuming you are using instanced geometry for each modular element - how do you apply decals (like graffiti) onto only one of these instances, without creating a new material for each instance? It is bugging me....

Thanks!

Really like the painted style for this guy but I gotta say that you should check your anatomy because some muscles seem off... Specially in the thighs and the back, are you thinking about applying some normal Map to it later? Keep it up man... :)

Hey viv, I love that portrait you made there! Is that someone you know? Got a really good vibe from it and love the facial expression... I don't know, just makes me happy! :)

Hi there, Textures.. hmm I`ll calculate.. for this whole building its..

512 x 512 (7)
512 x 256 (3)
1024 x 512 (1)
1024 x 1024 (2)

This is just diffuse textures. All have spec maps, not all have normal maps as I`m going for more of a GTA feel, more diffuse than heavy on the normals.

Hope to have more to post soon!
