:poly122:
Haha, for a sec I was worried that people would think I were referring to something posted above :poly122: Was referring to the chromaticz Aberration post effect!

I've been sleeping while modelling today, I'm not joking. I thought I'd been dreaming when I woke up in my bed, had to go and check on my comp... Scaaary :(

@ NoctyQ (http://www.polycount.com/forum/member.php?u=37561)
I don't care too much for the chromo, but the overall red hue should definetaly go..

Color Correction of NoctyQ's work. Not mine.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/20237615/day01_prop.jpg

Much more pleasing to look at, and you can see the real colors.

NoctyQ: that chromatic aberration is over the top tbh, its almost making me dizzy looking at it. but i also agree with TDub that the red hue isn't doing your blue door any justice. looks much nicer in the paintover. regardless, its a nice looking door

NoctyQ
03-12-2011, 02:53 PM
Haha I shall never write/post when I'm tired!:poly136:
What I meant was that I were aware of that the post effects and colour tint made the object look terrible! Might have come across like I was defending it though, which wasn't my intention.

Very much thanks for the awesome feedback TDub & Yevin! :)

The plan is to make one blue door every day of the week and so forth getting better at zbrush! :poly142:

@ Free_fall
That halftrack is sick so far! I've been playing Men of War like crazy for the last week! My top secret nazi sniper squad will soon fit perfect in it.. :\

Finally... I managed to get the Torso and the Head of Cain done. They both took an incredible amount of time -_-
http://homepage.hispeed.ch/war.of.art/RC2_04.jpg
I had to take some artistic freedom with the internal superstructure since I'm going to get him Laser Sinthered and I probably gonna need mass to hold it all together.

Now moving on to the Arms. Now which one should I do first of them four...

truedeja - fantastic renders and great sculpts, graduation photo is great.

Monolith - very clean lines, great work so far and lots of fun watching it slowly build up with more and more mass to it, was it Cain that had the opening hatch on the front with the little johnny 5 arm to grab the drug they used? I remember how cool that was haha.

@ Hboybowen:
I'm not really good in doing a time lapse of my work especially not since I believe they would bring up more questions than answers like:
"How the fuck was he rotating, moving AND panning the Viewport at the same time with his cursor beeing offscreen selecting Tools!?"

But I could find the Tutorials that started me doing SubD Modelling.
Tutorial 1: Basic understanding how MeshSmooth/TurboSmooth works (http://designreform.net/2009/02/3ds-max-working-with-subdivision-surfaces-part-1-meshsmooth/)
Tutorial 2: Putting it into action and maybe learn some tricks along the way (http://cg.tutsplus.com/tutorials/autodesk-3d-studio-max/model-a-high-poly-roof-hatch-in-3ds-max/)

The only Idea I can give would be:
Try to keep your Mesh in Quads - Especially near edges and around corners.
Experiment with cuts and how they look in TurboSmoothed Level 1, 2 & 3
Have Snickers (http://www.snickers.com/default.htm) and Nespresso (http://www.nespresso.com/#/ch/en) at hand, lots of em...

@ needs glue:
Yep, that was Cain. Though the "little Johnny 5 Arm" was actually the larger one he used to catch the Nuke Container Lewis threw towards him @ 8min 23sec
The smaller "Pincer Arm" was then used to insert the Container into the... uh... Food Processor? xD

Thanks for the comments guys!

CJE - thanks, its based on a race for a book series "Mistborn". Other than that i pretty much jumped straight into sculpting and did paintovers here and there to figure his loincloth and weapon straps out.

maph - thanks man. I'm not 100% happy with the waist rope yet either. hopefully i can bring the quality up a bit with a few extra polys, rebake, and textures. otherwise it seemed like the best option (i didn't want to have a bunch of messy mesh intersections when it came to rigging)

Any particular reason for choosing blue? If you wanted to make it more accurate, nearly all NYC subway entrances of that type are a standardized green color.

I wasn't in this thread during a week and now just impressed how many beautiful entries are there.

Some sculpt from me:

thanks guys :]

illusion: pretty cool lion, man. few anatomical issues here and there if youre shooting for realism. biggest bits would be how the base of the tail doesn't have enough girth, and the snout would probably be quite a bit more pronounced. something up with the eyes too, can't put my finger on it right now, maybe after some sleep.

those are just nitpicks though, super cool!

Slave_one,
Im using a modified material, not sure what it ever used to be.
Ontop of that I use another one or sometimes two materials that have a reflective surface to catch some more lighting information.
Combine these layers in photoshop with using "lighting" as layermode, it will sample out these highlights for you ontop of the base material you picked. A real simple yet useful way of combining materials you like, or create effects that are otherwise a bit difficult to create.

Also, when rendering is set from "preview" to "best" you can activate lighting information to add more depth to it then the default ao does.
Under document, you can set the background color and the range of its gradient to 0.
Looks nicer and you can paste images together real easely.

yes all soft edges, one smoothing group.

agreed about the cables. but i originally modeled this under a very strict triangle budget and didnt have the time to re-do the low poly and all the baking again. just did the texture recently.

What exactly do you mean by finishing touches? Usually yeah, carefully placed strokes of smooth and polish brushes do the trick, but first define the major shapes and the sillouette.

As for smoothing out curves, have you tried using Lazy Mouse? Hotkey 'L' if I'm not mistaken.

My take on the splash damage env test. As I couldnt actually find the actual spec, I just went off on my own and not really worried about the actual poly count :poly124: Keeping it realistic though! So, anyway, its my first UDK experience.. so I`m a total noob still. Its also not finished quite yet..

I am a total nube...

disanski
03-15-2011, 05:07 AM
Benji you could try the damian standard brush which is under the lightbox/brushes, or use the pinch brush.

Stinger88

Mask and move brush is good for creases like that. Mask below the breast and move the breast down to form the crease. Then add extra definition with the Dam standard or slash brush. Pinch if need be.

achillesian
03-15-2011, 01:59 PM
@SaferDan Was the mesh in triangles or something? Make sure stuff is quads when it goes to ZB, also don't be afraid to subdivide up to the hundreds of thousands and millions if you aren't.

Also: if you're sculpting from a sphere or something, you either have to subdivide excessively, or retopo and make a new basemesh that better fits the shape of the object.

SaferDan
03-15-2011, 02:05 PM
Well i had massive issues with this tbh i made a base mesh in maya but left a massive hole where the back legs are ¬_¬ i have no idea how i did that! but yeah after 2 hours in Z-brush i realised! so i decimated it , fixed the hole in maya and then put it back in Z-brush. It was probably a bad thing to do! But yeah i realise that i can sub divide loads its more a case of what brushes to use etc! but yeah thanks for the advice guys :)

Here are my suggestions.

To get fine detail (like thin part lines, you need to subdivide above the million mark. I find around 3 mill is enough. If you need finer detail you have to convert to HD geometry.

For breasts, try the move elastic brush with a low intensity but a fairly wide brush and a mid range focal point. In x you'll be able to pull some nice forms out and move them down to get the breast folds. Understand though that it's pulling the mesh so if you want finer detail in that area, you'll have to do a local subdivide. That tutorial is on the web.

Thank you Katana but im not sculpting the woman but the first piece of advice was awesome! It turns out i really wasnt using enough geo!

Here is an updated version what do you guys think? I mean it needs more bashing up but i think its ok? Maybe? I am worried it looks TOO smooth!

Three9: Nice work dude, the only thing that bugs me is the eyes, they seem very.. fullbright at the moment. Work on getting the specular and gloss right, maybe make it a little darker so the highlights are more concentrated, also if you make the diffuse darker and the spec just a little brighter it might help. Everything else I can't poke on :P

Also pose-wise, see if you can close the eyes a little bit, even for an alien having them that open looks unnatural.
Just my opinion :) I loved District 9 and it's awesome seeing some game rez stuff for it :D

Liking this a lot. One crit I'd have is that the orange is a bit monochromatic. A bit of desaturated or faded areas would help pull it together. That or a quick fake occlusion lighting pass to make the shapes read against each other visually.

I just hate how meshes loose volume in extreme poses. I always wanted to make a fighting game character but my rigging skills are insufficient. This rig works for most moves, but there are still plenty of instances where the weighting just does not cut it.

Gonna be making some armor and accessories soon! This is just the base mesh so to say.

Basically she is just a flat shaded low poly model with a hand painted texture. I used the character rigging tools that come with maya 2011 (they are awesome btw.) and I had a look at how blizzard does the UV layout for their WOW chars so I tried to do something similar for my model as it makes it easy to swap textures around and make variations for future characters to come.

Instead of putting together images I thought it would be easier to just capture a quick video of me fiddling around with the model... I am not going to speak cause I hate my voice. Hope this will show what you want to know. :)
