Hey guys,

I saw some older posts for recent years, but thought I may as well start this one up.

My goal is to get all the Polycount members who are going to GDC together at a bar and meet some virtual faces. Anybody have ideas/suggestions or interest in this?

As for why a bar??? Well, if you havent been to GDC yet, then I should tell you, there's a lot of alcohol consumption involved that week.

Lefty O'Doul was a rad place to meet up because it's quiet most nights, it's far enough from the Moscone Center to go unnoticed by the crowds, they serve food as well as drinks and like LoTekK mentioned, they didn't have bouncers at the door carding people. I think they ask for ID when buying alcohol anyway.

I applied to be a volunteer at GDC this year, but I haven't heard back on whether or not I've been accepted. If yes, then I'll be up for a meet-up for certain. If no, I will still consider going, but will have to budget for it and plan around it.

If I have to pay my own way again, I'll probably have to settle for the cheapest pass again, which I'd rather not do. I enjoyed the few panels and talks that I got to go to, and would much prefer a pass that allowed me to attend more of those. If I make the volunteer squad, I'll be able to attend for the whole week, and commit the money that I would have spent on a pass to pay for a hotel.

I missed the get-together last year because I was bumming at a relative's house and had to accommodate their schedule. If I make it this year I'll probably be staying at a motel, and should have more time to socialize and attend parties after-hours.

Ahhh, you lucky guys! I got turned down for a volunteer position. I'm still planning on going, but I won't be getting a full pass. I'll have to settle for one of the lesser options. I'm also considering driving this year instead of flying. I come from AZ, so it is within reasonable driving distance. Does anyone know of a good place to stay? Last year I stayed with my brother-in-law, but they've moved since then. Hotels and motels are fine, as long as the prices are reasonable.

I can't be dropping 1.5K on a ticket. The Summit pass is a lot more affordable, but would require that I be there for the whole week. (more hotel money) The Main Conference pass is more expensive, but the hotel fees would be lower, since I would only be there beginning Wednesday.

there are only a few instances where I found summits/tutorials useful. The Main conference mostly has some of the more interesting sessions. If you don't have a job I would also make sure to get a pass for the career pavilion and the Game Career Seminar.

Tutorials are largely worthless in my experience. The summits can be good if you have a very specific focus, for example I'm really looking forward to the Social Game Summit this year.

The real draw of GDC is the main conference pass as that's where you will be able to sit in on the relevant and (usually) interesting lectures.

Thanks for the advice guys. I might just have to settle for picking up an Expo Pass again this year. I didn't really want to, I did that last year and found it somewhat lacking. I really wanted to go to a lot more of the conference sessions. But the Main Conference pass is a whopping $1000. If I just get the Expo pass I will be able to afford a hotel for the three days I would be there.

As to the parties, most of those you don't actually need a pass to attend. Just talk around and you can find out where all of them are. I actually met someone last year who was developing an Android app to map out where the various parties were located and scheduled.

Yea, like tlovemark said, Lefty's was the spot last year: real laid back, really nice atmosphere and you don't need reservations. There's food until midnight, but if you get there late, there's a jack-in-the-box just up the street. That's where we had the big meet-up last year and it worked out really well. Bah sadly I missed the meet up, but I did run into some fellow polycounters along the trip.

Quick shout out - just wondering if there was any polycounter at the microsoft party wearing a polycount hoody, I was gonna come up to you but when I tried to get up to get another drink, dood was gone.

Overall GDC was awesome, and San Fran is just mind blowing. Would hate to live there (too big and busy for me) but for a trip, maaaan was it awesome.

yeah. also missed the meetup kinda. was at leftys but i left around 11:30.. heard everyone got there at 12. saw one guy wearing green greentooth shirt (the one with the BIG face), but wasnt sure whether or not to approach. XD but regardless it was good being at GDC and i think ill definitely be going back

I just wanted to drop in to thank those of you who came to the Polycount meet up. It was great to finally meet the people behind the art. I just wish I had a little more time to stay and chat with everyone who was there. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the time that I was able to squeeze in and I look forward to seeing you guys again next year.
