UDK crash on startup

Hey guys, I just downloaded the UDK and ran into some issues that took me all night to solve. My solution though is a bit of an awkward roundabout, so I was wondering if anyone knows why the program is doing this (Couldn't find an answer on the official forums and my registration is still pending so I can't post a topic there).

If I go into the binaries and try to open the UDK.exe file, I get a crash error right after the splash screen comes up (And this splash screen isn't the full splash screen, it looks like the installation splash screen. Missing the big UDK logo). However, I CAN get into the editor by opening the frontend.exe file and clicking launch editor. By doing this, the normal splash screen comes up and everything loads properly.

Is this a known issue? If so, does anyone know exactly why it's happening and why this works? Or was I always supposed to launch it from the frontend.exe file and I'm just being a silly noob? :\

I always run it from frontend. My motto is, as long as it works and you can achieve what you want, that's all that matters. At least you can work on your stuff.
