he was inspired by The Dark Tower, although I certainly wouldn't say he is Roland for anyone who read the books... but perhaps there is a little of him in there, I hope :P

oh yeah, and hopefully gonna have a nice video of him in max comin soon!

First thing that came to mind: Gunslinger?!

Looks really good. I remember you posting the revolver in the WAYWO thread some time ago.

gea gr8 modelling n texturing, esp. the micro details
anatomy-wise the face feels a little cramped, like u concentrated on sculpting the features on the front without relating to the rest of the skull and its structure. the brow/sockets kinda need to recede deeper into the skull. the head as a whole feels just a little too high sitting on the neck
the forearms are also too short, wrist should reach lower towards the hip bones

HonkyPunch
07-06-2010, 01:59 PM
To me it looks like a mix between Clint Eastwood and David Bowie.
Dirty Bowie ?

thanks for the comments everyone

shotgun great crits, appreciate it, will definitely remember them

because this project was so drawn out and done over a long time, and without any proper concept to begin with, there was a time when i lost a lot of faith in him, particularly on the overall design, and felt I could have done a much better job if i just started from scratch, as my observation skills and experience was growing and improving at work whilst doing this stuff

i did want to stop and just move onto something new, maybe even start him from fresh, but i decided to keep at it and see what else i could learn from the experience to carry on to new characters

i owe some thanks to genc buxheli who helped me bounce ideas around, although i dont think he posts on polycount, maybe ill convert him :P

again, thanks guys

Looks really nice now that you have finished Mike :)

Did you end up going for Xoliul's shader for the hair in the end? It lookss great whatever you ended up doing with it, and there doesn't seem to be any sorting problems with the alpha which is always a bonus!

By the way have you found a game art job yet?

skulburn - thanks! cool wallpaper

fat_cap - thanks man, yeah I used xoliul on the hair too, was nice to be able to add a subtle fresnel effect to it that could mix with the alpha

bejkon - haha best comment of all, made me smile. although I was initially aiming to make roland, I didn't think he ended up how I imagined him in the books, but I think there is a little of him in there :)

yozora - yeah I did experiment with the eyes, it's probably just the cubemap reflections that I could tone down. eye texture is here with the teeth and tongue. i was gonna spend some time trying to make a good quality facial pose where he had his mouth wide open for whatever reason... but bailed on it, was taking too much time and wanted to wrap it all.

been working at frontier developments in cambridge for the last 11 months

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s295/Dryn87/EyeTongueTeeth_Dif.jpg

butt_sahib - it's made of a few chunks of polys, with quite a lot being mirrored. whilst positioning the polys I unwrapped them early, and set down some quick large flow strokes to further help figure out how it would work, then when I was happy, just unwrapped it all properly and painted it all in PS. then used crazybump for some very slight normal map effects

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s295/Dryn87/hair.jpg

everyone else - thanks! <3

BANNER'D.

Nice work, sir :)

My main crit would be that the shirt colour/texture is very... boring. He's a pretty monochrome guy right now, and I guess that's the style you were aiming for, but I think a splash more saturation and colour in the shirt would really help make him pop.

I agree - this model is incredible in it's realism and everything.

My one crit is that the back of the jeans seem way too wrinkled - namely around the backs of the knees. You might have some loose wrinkles up the leg, but would someone's jeans really get that wrinkled normally?

07-08-2010, 11:07 AM
haha thanks everyone

yeah, i agree with every crit people have given this so far. there are probably a hundred things that I would like to have done differently looking back at it now, and there will certainly be many more as time goes on, but that's just the way it is

sandro - i used max for the retop and bake

quill voy - i was actually going to at one point! but when I started to think that he wasn't really how i imagined roland i decided not to, and thought it would be better just to let him go his own way

stefanH - yeah i used crazybump to milk all the normal map info. i basically go through crazybump and save out like 5 or so different maps with varying intensity and detail, then mix them up in photoshop until eventually it looks nice ontop of the diffuse... then i just collapse em all into one overlay layer

catstyle
07-19-2010, 05:42 AM
thanks again everyone! i'm really glad people like him, although i actually hate it now after looking at it for so long and wanting to have done things differently haha

rollin - i started out with a body sculpt, and then made different subtools for the jeans, shirt and boots. once i was happy with the general shape I split the body mesh into the arms and head, so I could divide them higher.

for the gunbelts, I planned them out in max first, unwrapped them and did the pattern work in photoshop. when all that was ready, I took them into zbrush and just did some subtle surface details to give a worn leather look. this got baked onto the low poly belts, and then I overlayed my PS pattern work that i tested out in advance.

for the holster though, I just did it all in Zbrush, as the pattern work design I wanted for it was a lot more organic

polozad - although I loved the RDR stuff, it was actually inspired by the dark tower series by stephen king, which is about the last true gunslinger in a post-apocalyptic world

polozad
07-27-2010, 12:39 AM
Tell me please, how you worked with diffuse map?

catstyle
07-27-2010, 02:27 AM
Jon - yeah I'd love to make a lobstrosity sometime :P the crimson king too.. in fact.. just about anything from DT!

polozad - first thing step is to get a nice clean normal map, then run it through crazybump to get different height map layers. then I take these and overlay them in the diffuse, along with an ambient occlusion pass baked in max.

this serves as a guide and base to start painting colour tones and any extra lighting. then I gradually detail it using various different brushes, and also photos. it's quite a gradual process and one of a lot of experimentation, but very easy once you get going

and Im assuming Clint Eastwood was the inspiration behind this piece? reminds me of him a lot with his attitude, body type, stance, and the guns....

My first thought as well lol. Face is a dead ringer for him.

Don't think I could ever touch that in a million years.... still haven't given a shot to anything but low poly modeling yet.

That's amazing, lecturer told me that you went Staffs University doing Game Design, I'm doing the same. Seen this before, it is truly amazing. I wish I can do such work one day :)

It's been said before, but I'm sure you won't mind hearing it again... absolutely stunning job. Thank you for posting so many images, as I'll certainly use them as a study for clean, optimised, beautiful realtime character modeling.

Wow this is an amazing example of why models sometimes don't need to be full colour even your clay character views look awesome, your Fold work is the best I have ever seen. A true inspiration :)

Amazing work! http://www.polycount.com/forum/images/smilies/pcount/icons/poly112.gif But I think the Clint Eastwood's lips drawn more inward. In any case, looks very professional.

Very nice work, I find a bit of clint eastwood on the bold model.

First thing that came to mind: Gunslinger?!

Looks really good. I remember you posting the revolver in the WAYWO thread some time ago.

EDIT: Would be cool to get this in L4D2. :D

My first thought:

This is really great. The realism is strong. I don't know if I just missed it in one of the images, but whats the polygon count on the revolver?

This is really a phenomenal model, but I must say this forums not big enough for two gunslingers :

It has a Clint Eastward feel, especially in the brow and eyes. A 21st Centuary Dirty Harry and the revolver just says it all, very good.

Awesome piece of work. Can you show how you sculpted the high poly hair? Or did you just paint on the low poly model?

This is Great. I especially love your use of texture and painting for this piece. My dad loves the old west, I grew up watching westerns and you definitely captured that. Thank you for your inspiration
