I really like 5 and 6, but the new 4 I like a lot.

Wow, lots of response to these.

Initially I wasn't a huge fan of the face shield idea and I was leaning more towards using some goggles instead. Now that I've thrown together some blockouts in 3D, I like the face shield better.

Here are some ideas I tried out. I'm probably going to run with some variation of #2.

Really nice. Yeah I'm digging 2 as well. But could you add damage to the faceguard like in 3 and 4? That would add some character to it.

Number 2 looks the best.

Also, Number 3 totally makes the demoman look like Captain Falcon. Just thought you should know.

EDIT: I am split here, I REALLY like your weapons, but other demo packs are making new shields...and I DO love shields...

I agree that #2 is a good idea. I hope you consider having it like the Hotrod where the shield goes up or down based on what he's doing.

For example, having the shield up when his melee is out but down when he's holding an explosive weapon.

I'd consider shortening it maybe a touch and/or tilting it up a smidge more so his face is still plenty in view.
depends on how smoky you're going to make the visor mat too, looks quite dark. With some env map on it it should be pretty obviously 'there'

I don't think 3 and 4 work, it seems like they don't really match the theme you are using since they would offer little protection against explosions. So i think 1 is the best.

funny, I was about to post a riot mask too like jamesbond. The grill itself would be alot of extra geo. The only other ones I find are gas masks and that's not going to work.

I actually don't mind 1 but it's way too opaque. Maybe something more clear with a more intense spec. The material should do the rest. The viewport screenshot is deceiving.

I hear what you guys are saying about goggles, and I still like the goggle idea, but I simply don't think it'd work all that well with the other things I have going here. I like the current helmet and I don't think goggles would look all that great with it, or they're at least not as fitting with the theme as a face shield is.

That said, Captain Falcon will not be happening. Sorry to disappoint.

As for making the face shield come down depending on the action, I don't know how to do that. I think it's something Valve would have to do.

I don't yet know what kind of shader magic I'll need to pull to get the face shield looking how I want it, but it's definitely going to be more transparent than the blockouts.

Here's where I'm at right now. I still haven't UV mapped it or anything, but I think the modeling stage is basically finished except for a bit of optimization.

Could you make the visor-shield-thingie jiggleboned?

Don't make it so it goes down during some special action, make it so it goes down by himself when he goes flying and when he lands from explosions and stuff like that through the magic of physics :3

Okay, now that's awesome. You could probably go a little more with the damage if you want, but right now it looks really cool. I'd definitely start playing as Demo if your items were chosen.

The helmet looks great swizzle. I definitely second the motion to add a jiggle bone to the visor to give it a little bounce.

I think the top trim that you have modeled onto the visor portion of the helmet is a little too fine, as far as the details goes. You could probably get away with a single piece of trim that is slightly thicker than the current one and it would better fit the TF2 style. Something similar to the helmet Spetch posted.

It looks great man. I agree with all of these other people in saying that a slight jiggle bone effect (if it's possible) would really add to the awesomeness of the hat. I also have one more question, what color do you think you're going to tint the glass on that helmet?

I'm almost certainly going to add a jiggle bone so the shield bounces up an down. Or at least I'd like to if I can figure out how to do it. When I try to add an additional bone to this thing, it screws up the rotation and so far I haven't figured out a fix for it.

Anyway, here's how things stand at the moment. The colors are still WIP and I still have a little cleanup I need to do to the model, but it's almost finished. Just need to paint up the textures, and that shouldn't take too long.

I can't really make the glass much thicker without remodeling the metal bit that holds it up. I think it'll read well as-is anyway.

I liked the idea of goggles as well, but I decided against them because I don't think they would've been as readable as the face shield. Yes, team colors are definitely happening.

I actually tried changing it so the glass is translucent instead of being additive, but it turns out that you get shitty alpha sorting when you're not careful with translucency. Looks like it's going to stay the way it is in this latest picture, unfortunately.





Here's the latest. For some reason or another I can't get actual skins to work, but it's easy enough to work around that. I'm sure Valve will be able to add skins if this actually gets in the game; I already have the textures ready to go.

Now to finish up the grenade, clean up some stuff in the medic pack and submit everything. There's surprisingly little work left for me to do. Sweet!

I'm pretty much finished here. I may have a few small tweaks to do, but none of them will really be noticeably different from the images here.

Looks great :) all the stuff turned out well... only gripe is that the helmet IMO is a little boring especially looking from the back - put a logo or something there?

Being unemployed helps with this. I don't really suggest it, though.

gonna go out on a limb and say with your talent you're not gonna stay unemployed for long :) (unless of course you like it)

Yeah, same model as before. I'm going to tweak the textures a little, but I'm pretty well settled on that design. The only thing that was bugging me about it was that I hadn't gotten the textures looking quite right, but then I also hadn't put much work into them

I have some texture cleanup to do in a couple of spots, especially on the needle gun, and I need to make sure all my files are in order. I tend to generate a lot of excess like backups and experiments before I'm finished with projects, so I need to trim those down and make sure everything's organized well before I submit everything.

I'm probably going to add a couple more dings and brush strokes to the helmet, but I'm actually fairly satisfied with how it turned out. As for getting myself un-unemployed, I hope that happens soon, but first I need to set up a portfolio website.

Yes and no. I was able to get the visor to jiggle around, but I wasn't able to do it without having the rotation for the parent bone that everything connects to get all screwed up. I've been using Milkshape for import/export, and I think the way it handles and exports bones is all wonkified. I'm going to send a note along when I submit this stuff saying that I think it'd be cool if the visor was jiggleboned.

well mostly I was just teasing Swizzle by suggesting that Valve was enticing him to make awesome content with a fictitious job offer and then release his stuffs as "community content" -ie: the Pain Train - and by keeping that generalized posting up he'd be less inclined to apply and be imeadiately accepted at another rocking studio.

-- though if in fact the only reason he isn't currnetly working at a rockin studio is because he hasn't put together proper web portfolio and thus hasn't even applied, well then he should get off his lazy ass and make one already shouldn't he?!?

err. why? i would say do it. yes, it is awesome and got a high chance of winning, but there is notthing wrong with that. say class A doesnt have any really good ones and if swizzie did that one, now, we will get some awesome weapon/hat/misc for that class. it is for the good of Valve and the whole tf2 community :DD

I submitted both the intact and exploded versions of the weapon with a note saying that I think it'd be cool to have it explode.

HOWEVER

I cannot control how it breaks in-game without having it as a direct replacement for the bottle.

I can guarantee that they will announce the other 4 classes adn you will win. There's alot of submissions to go through especially after the engi update. I'm sure they're breaking it up into 2 sections. You WILL get your comp in the game. You did help me with your texturing advice and I mucho appreciate everything.

Both of Swizzle's packs were my favorite packs of all packs in the history of TF2 polycount contest...i'm now very very disappointed at Valve.

I'm fairly sure his packs weren't chosen because Valve were looking for original themes in the packs. Look at the winners. They're all new themes. While Swizzle's packs are great and fit the TF2 theme perfectly, they're just expansions and modifications to current styles of weapons in TF2. I have no doubt that some of his items will be added through community updates though.
