Getting some more practice with zbrush, Still having a tough time with areas like the eyes, and mouth. I havent done ears on this one yet, now im finding it to be very counterproductive to add them in after blocking in everything else and moving on. probably should have added them at the same time as the rest of the detail.

Gah!! Such a fresh and new WAYWO thread... not even two pages yet. I feel compelled to post something in here now! :D I'm pretty sure I posted this in the "We can do traditional art too!" thread, but I don't think I did it here, so:

Acrylic on canvas, 24x36"
Made it as a comission by my friend for her mother for xmas :P I don't think it really looks so good in this photo (I suck at taking pictures of paitnings :(), but her mom apparently really loves it. Like, tears-in-her-eyes-when-she-unwrapped-it, love it. I was so thrilled to hear it :)
I made if from a postcard my friend brought back from Scottland. This is the Ring of Brodgar, on the Orkney Islands. Her mom is Scottish, so it seemed appropriate :)

Neox: Tons of great work on your site (lots I'd never seen before), but I think the navigation could be a little simpler.
Here's some doodles from the past couple of days. I'm trying to take reference pics and stylize/change them as I draw in order to absorb information rather than just copying. Inked and then scanned and adjusted in PS:

thanks everyone for the input i just changed a few things, i'm really not good at html, css, java or php stuff, reading it is very cryptical to me thats why i use wordpress with premade layouts and some graphical changes to them, so however, what i changed
i added an really obvious "x Close" Button thats not only on the bottom as before, but also on the top of the facebox "popup", also it's integrated into the box and not external as before
and i changed the arrows that have been besides the headline and moved them inside the preview images so its also more obvious how to use it
what i would like to add but where i have to dig a bit deeper and what i'm totally not sure about is, to add some arrows inside the box so you don't have to exit it when you want to switch galleries + changing the mainside with that too, but really i have no clue how to do that and working on websites gives me a big headache, thank god its wordpress and once set up, super easy to update etc.

Yeah I know, just wanted to start sculpting asap and rushed it. Just don't need to let it become a habit. :shifty:
mLichy: No i did not, i'm a 3d artist even though i should have learned that stuff in my apprenticeship, but i never like webdesign. Its written in "about" and in "contact", the layout is done by press75, i searched for portfolio layouts for wordpress that don't look like a normal blog, i had that before and it implies that i'm willing to cotribute via writing, but i'm not a writer and really don't write as much text as i create 3d stuff so i needed a change. Also i wanted a clean and professional presentation and thought the "folio-elements" layout definitely fits these needs. I found quite a lot of other nice looking layouts but most where too complex or blog style.
@rollin: not quite sure what you mean, but i guess you mean that the conent doesn't open in an extra window but add a table or div or whatever below the large gallery thumbnail? I doubt i can do that with my VERY limited knowledge, all i can do is copy paste and edit what i think i understand :D
@leviathan: i guess if you just wanted to sculpt, you could better just create an even simpler basemesh or use a premade one, thats more quadbased with an even distribution of detail, look at the mudbox baseman for that, thats what i use pretty much all the time, you are free-er when developing forms and shapes when you don't have too much flow already defined, but thats just my experience :)
@kiripiri: a bit nopisy but some really nice shapes in there!

@Neox: On your new portfolio, the largest word on the page is "portfolio". What's more important, stating that it's a portfolio or stating the name of the person whose work and portfolio it is? :)
Might want to swap your name into that text area if possible. Other than that, it looks good and works well.

I decided that I needed some practice nailing down my high to low workflow before applying it to two environment scenes I'm working on right now, so I decided to focus on finishing more assets.
As such, I'm making this portable communications unit from Paul Richards' awesome concept art from Quake 4:
http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/4610/quake4portcommsunit.jpg
http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/2673/commsunit.jpg
Still messing with edgeflow and proportions right now, but the main focus of this piece for me will be the texturing - I need to start putting in more time in Photoshop, and thought this would be a good piece to practice.

Wanted to ask, how would you translate those brush strokes into zbrush.
That is, your strokes are like /\ (pinched and sharp) but even with some tweaking my strokes come out like /`\ (like a hill with a smooth gradient). Maybe i should play with the settings more :P as atm i have to pinch the smooth strokes and so on. Bah, im blabbing :S

I usually use a combination of decobrush and Slash 3 to lay down wrinkles. You can get a nice looking effect going quite quickly.

I'd like to seem a better quality lighting, but the lighting looks really good. Kinda mirrors edge-ish.
The black and white "marker lines" look great.
hmmmmmmboxers, big jaws, broken noses, loving it all Nick!
stupid question : is it all scanned in then overlaid on a textured background? or is it some awesome roned paper you got here? also it seems you found a great white brush pen ... those are so hard to find, i tried so many of them with no success...

looks awesome! I thought it was a second concept for a second then and had to re-read it's the 3D :) maybe the wood is a tad red though, maybe add some yellows or desaturate it a tad to match the concept. I think it would pick up some nice light and highlight colours if you are still going to add the green bulbs.

Turpedo, I really love this design but I'm not entirely feeling the transition to 3d. You have some really beautiful curved lines going on in the drawing and then then 3d seems really straight and linear.

and judging from the angle of the sun, its pretty close to burning a hole through said crotch. which is hilarious and i actually like that... but reminds me to tell all the kids out there, never stare at the sun with your crotch through a large telescope.

My only critique on the cleaver is there would be more splatter. Think about the splatter pattern as the cleaver is slammed into a chunk of meat. Normal force, equal and opposite reaction and all that.

awesome mop. you started that a long ass time ago but it's been worth the wait. Did you model a lot of that in pose?
aesir: Nope, I just posed it tonight (which is why there's clipping errors and floating bits and weird bulges all over the place).
I've exported the lowest subdivision from Transpose Master into Max, rigged it with Biped so I can easily pose/animate the base mesh and bring it back into ZBrush.
So now I just need to settle on a good final pose, and do the final sculpting pass in this position. Up until this point it's all been neutral T-posed, and a fair bit of it is mirrored (hands, forearms, legs and feet). I will try to sculpt more unique folds, stretches and muscle positions once I've settled on the final pose.

You could do it with alphas, or you could do it with an overlay on your normal map, really depends on your preference

I think there might be a way to do this with the new feedback feature, or whatever the feature is that turns up bumpyness over everything thats unmasked, i forgot what its called. Anyways you might be able to use that.

one way is to > put your uv's out as best you can with a mind to how the thing would be constructed as a garment. then you can use an image to pop those details out with displacement in zb. or use as an alpha
doing it this way allows some freedom to mess about with sizing in ps ( with your image ). since simply applying the effect in zb is a one or two step and ' global ' process. and it's kinda non destructive in a way

I'm not sure how I feel about that rim light shader, face looks great, very mass effect.
I actually feel as the though the face is a little weird... I don't know if its the proportions that are confusing me or not... but it just looks like it doesn't fit... and yuh, that rim shader is making absolutely no sense at all.
Why not try and setup some basic lights to set the mood, then do a new render, cause that shader is confusing me.
I don't really like the texture on the suit. Seems a bit oversaturated in places.
Or maybe it's just the mix of colors that seems odd to me.
Really like the head, but yeah, like they said, I'd like to see a different render as well.

I used Tom Tallian's low poly scout as scale reference, but he's starting to fit the environment so well i left him in for these screengrabs. If its a problem just let me know and i'l take them down.
This shit is getting fun!
Wip of a first environment I'm making :) a subway, basing it on this concept initially link (http://features.cgsociety.org/newgallerycrits/g94/338594/338594_1241037507_large.jpg)

Beautiful work, now I want either a TF2 Mirror's Edge map or a double-jump mod for Mirror's Edge.

Pulled this one out of the mothballs two days ago. Retopo'd reUV'd and resculpted some parts.

Looks Cool! The only thing would be the colours, the orange is a bit too brown, the green a bit too olive; I mean, if you want it to be as close to the original as possible.
Also the AC needs to be whiter!
Will you be baking lightmaps for this? Im guessing the texture budget of the DS might not allow it.
Even though the sculpt's not finished, I wanted to mess around with rendering and compositing.
Now when I finalise the sculpt, I can just drop it into the scene and render it for instant turnaround goodness :)
http://www.greveson.co.uk/dump/foto_turn.jpg (http://www.greveson.co.uk/dump/foto_turn.avi)
Requires the XVid (http://www.xvid.org/Downloads.15.0.html) codec.
Unfortunately I think I forgot to render out the last frame so it doesn't quite loop perfectly :(

what a sexy beast, well done, Paul!
MoP, Awesome! How did you get such good quality at 1.5mb?
GCMP: Rendered out full uncompressed AVI (133mb), imported into VirtualDub, set the compression to XVid at a quality of 2.0 (1.0 is the best, but also about 4x as big). It's only a 72-frame video, but XVid codec is just really good :)

Hey!
MoP, thats cool model!
How you get chromatic aberration effects?
Levus: I found this thread after searching on Google :)

Nice work MoP! I like the pose, brings him to life especially from different angles in the turnaround.
I'd lower the strength of the chromatic abberation though for the final render/turnaround it's a bit overpowering.

The proportions are quiet nice on the Scout for the way you redid this ME stuff, so you might think about replacing him with another character ME themed but simmilar/exact same sillouette?

Doing some sculpting to get the hang of it (I was never good at Zbrush). Started from a polysphere.

MattQ86 : Thanks man
hellobuddy : Thanks, I'l mess around with the colors in a bit to get them to pop a bit more, you're rite about them being off a bit. All the metal will prolly do with some whitening later on, just need some contrast rite now for the rest of the environment. In the end i'l more than likely do lightmaps, since the project is being built using unity, i should stop calling it mirrors edge DS hehehe, just sounds catchier
e-freak: My thoughts exactly, if anyone wants to step up and build me one i'm all for it :)
That's gonna be the hardest part of this project for me, I havnt done a character since graduating college 2 years ago
i'd do it but have no time right now

oh man ... Mop that looks very nice in the video ;o!
MoP, thanks for the info, tried exactly the same thing and mine was pretty bad lol. Must be the actual frames that were in fault although static renders looked okay.

His clothes are WAY to baggy. So baggy that you can't even see his body shape and he ends up looking like all his sides are just a straight line down.
